Few cigars have gotten as much completely justified buzz as Casa Magna and Casa Magna Oscuro. The original was named best cigar of 2008 by Cigar Aficionado, and the Oscuro earned its own very respectable 90. The original features a Nicaraguan Colorado Maduro wrapper leaf, along with filler leaves from the Jalapa and Esteli regions of Nicaragua, while its darker-wrapped cousin is made with a Honduran oscuro wrapper and Honduran and Nicaraguan filler. Both lines are flawlessly rolled, allowing for a generous draw and straight burn.

The Zino Platinum Scepter Series is not only one of the smoothest, richest smokes you can get, but it also has some of the coolest packaging. Seriously, look at that packaging—it’s got dogs with ruffled-collar shirts. That might be the coolest thing since we ran a picture of a lion with a cowboy hat. Anyway, these stogies are made with Ecuadorian Connecticut shade wrappers, Connecticut Broadleaf binders, and filler from the Dominican Republic and Peru for notes of butter, caramel, and loads of black pepper for a smoke that is worthy of its legitimately awesome packaging.

The Padron family has seen its fair share of hardships—the mass exodus of tobacco farmers after the 1959 revolution in Cuba, the burning of their factory by rioters in Nicaragua, and even several bombing attempts on their headquarters in Miami—but none of that seems to have slowed them down. Padron’s core line of cigars is made with 2 ½-year old tobaccos and held together with sun-grown natural or maduro wrapper leaves for a robust, earthy smoke. Not to mention, these guys have the highest rating in Cigar Aficionado of any non-Cuban cigar, and that definitely counts for something.

Dion Giolito blended the original Illusione line to recreate the robust, peppery, earthy flavors of pre-Sandinista Nicaraguan cigars. When Rocky Patel first started in the cigar business, critics were certain he wouldn’t make it. Ten years later, he released Rocky Patel Decade, a full-bodied blend that received an impressive 95-percent rating from Cigar Aficionado. Needless to say, many of those critics fell silent. These dark, oily stogies are made with Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper leaves and secret blend of Nicaraguan binder and filler tobac-cos. Each starts with tons of peppery spice and gives way to notes of coffee, black cherry, and leather.

The entubar method of cigar rolling involves rolling filler leaves around a central tube of robust ligero leaves. This allows for a greater variety of fillers to be added to the blend without obstructing the draw, and also ensures a perfectly even burn. Kiki Berger and the Argenti brothers took this method a little further with the Berger & Argenti Entubar, which has a ¼-inch nub ligero tobacco extending from the center of the foot of each cigar. This makes for an easy draw, a very unique burn, and notes of coffee, cedar, and a little bit of licorice sweetness.

In early 2000, Nick Perdomo Jr. and Sr. cleared and analyzed one specific plot of land on one of their best farms in Esteli, Nicaragua in hopes of growing their best tobacco yet. The soil on this plot was in-credibly fertile and allowed them to grow the binder and filler leaves for Perdomo Lot 23, one of their most celebrated blends in their lineup. These Nicaraguan beauties are available in three different wrapper shades and are exclusively made from the nutty, peppery, and sweet leaves from this specially-designated plot of land.

The blenders at La Aroma de Cuba are always striving to outdo themselves. Even though the original La Aroma de Cuba line received several 90-plus ratings in Cigar Aficionado, they revamped it in 2009 and upped their high score to 93 percent. Then, in 2010, they released the La Aroma de Cuba Mi Amore line, which scored an even higher 94 percent. These stogies feature a sweet, chocolaty Mexican wrapper leaf, along with Nicaraguan binder and filler, for a strong and spicy smoke with enough sweet cocoa character to appeal to anybody.

Contrary to what their name would suggest, Factory Throwouts are made with what J.C. Newman couldn’t bear to throw out—scraps of quality tobacco from their higher-end brands. You would be hard pressed to find a bundled cigar that is this tasty and well made for

Tabacalera Perdomo went above and beyond when they made Perdomo Fresco. These stogies, which sell for

as low as $2.00 per stick, are made with an entirely long-filler blend from Perdomo’s farms in Nicaragua, and come in either creamy Connecticut shade or spicy, chocolaty Nicaraguan maduro wrapper shades.

Named for the famous Rolando Reyes, Sr., Roly is made in the same factory as Puros Indios and Cuba Aliados. These stogies, which

bottom out at $1.43 a stick, are sweet and spicy with woody notes and great construction. Roly bundles are cheap enough to smoke while mowing the lawn, but tasty enough to enjoy anytime.

Brick House is not your typical throwback brand. Named for J.C. Newman’s childhood home, Brick House is made by his grandsons, Eric and Bobby Newman, and it is a new kind of beast. Made with an oily Havana Subido wrapper leaf and Nicaraguan binder and filler, Brick House is rich with syrupy sweetness and notes of coffee, pepper, cedar, and toast. These stogies stormed onto Cigar Aficionado’s Top 25 Cigars of 2010 with a 92 rating, and we have them for as low as $4.35 a stick. Now that’s a value stogie!

When Litto Gomez blended La Flor Dominicana Double Ligero, he wanted to create a cigar that was incredibly powerful, but smooth and enjoyable—this is definitely one of his best successes yet. The Double Ligero line is made with Ecuadorian Sumatra or Connecticut Broadleaf wrapper leaves and Dominican binder and filler, including a heavy dose of peppery ligero leaves. Since these stogies are so powerful, they are best enjoyed slowly after a big meal.
