VOLUME 9 ISSUE 1 NOVEMBER 2014 PAGE 1 The Navajo Eagle From the Eagle’s Nest..... Welcome to the first addition of the Navajo Eagle Newspaper for the 2014-15 school year. It is strange being a contributor to the newspaper after being the sponsor for the past 8 years. So many new and exciting things are happening at Navajo this year. I hope you have had a chance to welcome our new staff members Mrs. Darwent, Mrs. Weiss, Ms. Holman, Ms. O’Shea, Ms. Cafculus, and Ms. Gabriel. We are ver happy to add them to this amazing group of teachers. It is hard to believe the first trimester is already finished. I have been enjoying working side by side with Mrs. Herman and I’m working on getting to know all of the students and their parents. So many exciting things have been happening. We started the year with our “One Book... One School” by reading the novel Wonder and the students and teachers had a great time using this very powerful story to continue teaching our students the theme of “Choose Kind”. This has tied in well with our PBIS theme, and our goal to teach students about anti Bullying in the schools. And speaking of PBIS, I would like to thank Mrs. Anicich and Mrs. Bruton for bringing in our new mascot Glider. He was named by the students at the beginning of the year and will have an opportunity to visit each classroom as the year progresses. Our SOAR activity for the end of this trimester will be Matt Wilhelm, Bike Pro. Matt will perform amazing BMX bike stunts while speaking about bullying, perseverance, bike safety, and character. The end of the first trimester came quickly and are looking forward to Parent-Teacher Conferences. This will be the first time our 4th grade will receive a standards based report cards at Navajo and the teachers have been working very hard with them to meet the first trimester proficiency of these standards. The expectation with standards based report cards is that a student receives a three on assessed standards. Please remember that the standards based report cards identify the learning standards to be met at the end of each grade level. This new school year has also brought more challenges for the students and teachers. With the state implementing the PARCC assessment, it became very apparent that we as a school needed to ramp up our expectations of these very bright students we are so fortunate to teach. Earlier this summer the teachers and I met to look at the math curriculum and realized that Everyday Math might not prepare the students for the expectations of the Common Core Standards, so as a team we decided to pilot the Engage New York Math Series. We started with the 5th grade classrooms and quickly realized that we needed to incorporate Everyday Math with the Engage NY modules in 4th grade. You can visit www.engageny.org or http:// commoncore.org/maps/math/home to learn more about this math series. I want to take this opportunity to invite our parents and students to our Navajo Family Breakfast on Friday, Nov. 21, 7:30-8:15 am. This celebration is our way of recognizing American Education Week and the collaborative relationship between families, communities, and teachers. Wishing you all the best in the upcoming holiday season. Enjoy the Winter Break! Best regards, Lynn Adamonis, Assistant Principal

CELEBRATIONS GALORE Backwards dayBy: Jessica Frye and Skyla Giardini!! Has something ever seemed so cool that it seemed backwards? Well at Navajo school on Friday, October 3rd we all dressed backwards.Backwards day all started at 8:15, bringgggggggg!!!!!! Then it happened. The moment kids walked in EVERYTHING was backwards. Shirts, pants, hoodies and even glasses where backwards. Some girls even tried to put there hair backwards (not a success)! ! Backwards day wasn’t just about the clothes. Every 4th and 5th grade girl and boy got a post card attached to a string and wore like a backwards necklace. During lunch and recess, everyone got a chance to complement others’ actions by writing a nice note on their back. When lunch and recess was over, everybody had a card full complements. This spirit day was based off the book our whole school was reading called Wonder. During this entire school year, we will be reminded to choose kind.

One Book, One SchoolBy: Claire Flipiak

! This year, Navajo School is doing a ‘One Book One School’ reading program for the book Wonder by R. J. Palacio. Wonder is about a 10 year old boy named Auggie Pullman, who has a tragically deformed face. His story is both touching and inspirational as it shows how hard fitting into a new school can be, especially for someone with Auggie’s face. This story will surely touch all hearts and teach a valuable lesson; that appearances are not worth judging by.

Happy Birthday August Pullman

Blue is only 1 word to describe August Pullman’s birthday. Auggie Pullman is the main character in the novel Wonder. October 10th, 2014 was Auggie’s birthday. As a celebration, Navaijo School threw a birthday party for him. The 4th and 5th grade went into the gym for Auggie’s birthday. Fist, we made Auggie a birthday card. Next, we

played a party game against the other classes.

Before Auggie’s celebration, the 5th grade watched the Sounded of Music just like Auggie did in Wonder. The studentsgot to bring pillow pets, stuffed animals, blankets, and sleeping bags. We also got to bring in an extra snack for the movie. Overall, Auggie’s birthday was a huge

Ease The Tease By: Paul and Gordan

Ease the tease is great program for children 6-10. It gives easy strategies to use when being bullied or witnessing bullying. Some main points were to use self talk, humor, I messages (I think, I feel, I wish), , report to an adult, and be a buddy. Imagination Theater has very funny actors. We interviewed a 4th grade student about the assembly and here is what he had to say, “I thought it was very entertaining. I would give it four stars. I like Isaac the most. My favorite part was when Bruce fell in slow-motion.”

September 11-Never Forget-By: Joe Cinkus

On 9-11,we remember the tragic attack on the World Trade Center. Many people lost their lives that day including individuals that worked in the towers and first responders. Policemen died, paramedics died and mostly, firemen died. In all 343 fireman lost their lives that day. After the first attack, everyone thought it was an accident. But the sad truth was, it wasn't. The World Trade Center wasn't the only place that was attacked. The Pentagon was also attacked. When people were trying to contact their loved ones, the phone signal became so blocked that the texts or messages weren't received for so long, some people died when loved ones thought they were alive. It was a very depressing day, 9-11. That day will be engraved in history forever.

By: Izabella and Kelly

! One student thought 9-11 was a spirital day because of our beautiful school sprit.Navajo School honored 9-11 by listening to the National Anthem and reciting the Pledge of Allegience around the flag pole by the school entrance.

A very, very, Scary NightBy: Victoria Remian

It was her best friends birthday party. Aldona was on her way there. When she got there everyone was around a table, about to blow out candles. But then there was a big BOOM! Everyone was scared. Then the lights went off. Everyone was there at first. But when the lights went back on everyone was gone! Aldona was so, so, so, scared, she ran into her car and started driving home. There was not a car before, but then Aldona saw a car following her. It was following her but automaticly it was gone. “What is happening!” said Aldona. She remembered about an old, creepy, scary, haunted house on her block. She turned onto another road and found an old cottage. She knocked on

the door and met very nice people. She came in and stayed the night. When she woke up she left a note on a table with a flower pot by the door. Then she came home. Aldona came back later to see if they got the note but, the house was gone. Sitting there was the table, note and flower pot. She went to her friends house and told them what happened. “ I don’t believe you” said her friends. Suddenly, a boy walked up and said “ Guess what happened to me last night”. Aldona told her friends thats exactly what happened to her. Her friends believed them and hoped it never happened again. The End

Happy HalloweenBy: Delaney and Leona

Hope you had fun on halloween and got lots of candy. At the halloween celebration we did a lot of cool things and games. We saw a lot of creepy and cool costumes. In the gym there were a lot of activities like bowling, cup stacking, ring toss, and running with fake eggs on a spoon all the gams were fun. And in the lunch room there was pumkin decorating everyone decorated a pumpkin. When we went outside it was really cold some people did not like going outside. We interviewed people and asked them questions about the halloween celebration. The people we chose to interview all said the party was really fun. The favorite game one was cup stacking. “Outside at the parade it was really cold. And pumpkin decorating was a little to messy,” one 4th grade student said. Hope you had fun trick-or-treating with your friends and family!

The ScarecrowBy: Stevie Cantu

! On a scary night by the lake near the Johnson’s house there was a scarecrow that sleeps at noon and wakes up at night. Once he tried to scare the Cantu kids. The scarecrow climbed up on the walls where the kids were sleeping. He mad a whispering sound, then the kids woke up and looked under there beds, and when they looked up they saw the scarecrow! They started to scream and they ran. They kept on running until they found a net. So the kids decided to lead the scarecrow to the net where they tangled him. They knew it was a mask so they pulled the mask off and it was .... their DAD! He told them why he did what he did, that it was a “family thing.”So, everything went back to normal and they know when next year comes, don’t look under your bed!

THE NEW FACES OF NAVAJO

NAVAJO’S CLUBSSchool StoreBy:Roxanne Habbal

This year Mrs.Noort and some fifth-graders are running School Store. School Store is a store that sells things that you might need or want to for school. Such as pencils, erasers, tape, pens, and a lot more. School Store meets during your lunch time. It is very similar to Soar Store but instead of paying with Soars you pay with money. The first School Store is on Oct. 30 and will meet about every two weeks (any fourth graders who are interested in doing this next year, you can sign-up for it).

Community ServiceBy: Gianna Gordon and Kelly Greene

! Do you like to help people? Are you nice to the other students around you? If you are you would love community service. Here at community service we decorate for different occasions at Navajo. We also count a lot of box tops. We have to put 50 box tops together and each box top is worth 10 cents. The total amount of money we get, that money goes to the school and D.J at the end of the year. During Christmas time we do a coat drive. You can also bring mittens, hats, scarves, and more. We will send all of that stuff to the less fortunate.! Sadly the 4th graders can’t do community service until they are in 5th grade. But then until then 4th graders could help out by participating in the coat drive and donating box tops. That is all about Community Service! Thank you!
