In reference to upcoming 2014 Lead Free Standards. You can go to website http://www.aaronco.com/lead-faq.htm where you can find answers to questions you might have in regards to the Reduction of lead in Drinking Wa-ter Act. Our Monthly Newsletter has had a few bugs we have worked out and will be posted in a timely manner for the remainder of the year. My apolo-gies to all our chapter members, For those who missed the past few monthly newsletters, they will be available on our NJ Chapter website. As I mention every month. I would just like to put out a request for More ASPE members to attend OUR monthly meeting and share any in-teresting information you may have with others. See how others are designing and completing successful projects. I am always interested in how we solve problems that occur during de-sign, construction and inspection. We can learn a lot from our very knowledgeable membership. Hope to see you at a meeting or two you will not be disappointed. Any comments or questions email me at [email protected]. I hope everyone has a great Holiday season.

This month I wanted to alert you that the US EPA WaterSense program has issued a Notice of Intent to develop a specification for flushometer-valve toilets. It

describes the efficiency and performance criteria being considered for the draft specifi-cation, as well as technical issues that need further clarification. It is important to note that US government projects require you to provide fixtures that comply with the Water-Sense program. So when the specification for flushometer-valve toilets is published your spec must comply with the available WaterSense standards. Comments on the NOI can be sent to [email protected]. Their goal is to develop the specification in 2014, but it is contingent upon the schedule for incorporating the rele-vant revisions from updates to the ASME/CSA A112.19.2-2008/CSA B45.1 Standard for Ceramic Plumbing Fixtures (as dis-cussed in Section IV of the NOI), as well as adequate resolution of the questions and is-sues presented in the NOI. So this may be a late 2014 or 2015 standard. As I mentioned last month National is asking the chapters to review the proposed chang-es to the Uniform Plumbing and Mechanical Codes. We needed to compile our com-ments and get them to the ASPE Legislative Committee by November 15, so if you have any comments get them to me ASAP. Give me any suggestions you might have in sup-port of or in opposition to the position of the IAMPMO Technical Committee’s actions on the proposed changes. The ASPE Technical Committee will review all the comments and

So far this year we have had two meetings with interesting presenta-tions. The September meeting speaker was Bob Barrett who dis-cussed hot water design and questioned us if the

old methods of hot water design still apply today. With water reduction fixtures and schools where showers are no longer used, do our calculation spread sheets still apply? In the presentation he also challenged the design of multi-family residential projects. Are two and three bedroom apartments still occupied by the same number of occupants as they were 30 years ago? Does location and affluence of the apartment complex af-fect the amount of domestic hot water used? Throughout our careers we will most likely not come to know the answers to all of these questions. What differentiates a good engineer from the rest is not so much what he knows but knowing which questions need to be addressed before a design is put together.

Our October meeting presentation was on a topic most of us have seen but don’t spend all that much time thinking about until we are in the field looking at a pipe 15 ft. above our heads wondering what it is. Raymond Batkay presented the differ-ent styles of pipe markers, why contractors would prefer some over others and their dif-ferent advantages and disadvantages. This is a topic we tend not to focus on and usually deal with at the end of a design job as a specification item. We should think
