Our farmers will soon begin taking in what look to be good crops. There will be lots to do outside in God’s creation. What a great time of year! It’s also the time of year when we do some of the “order” side of our shared work for Christ and Neighbor at Zion. We’ll be working on next year’s budget, and charting our course for 2018. For me, it’ll mean working on nominations for the coming year. I really hope I didn’t just hear you groan… As a church that does not have a “simplified leadership structure,” Zion has many positions that require appointment of the right people in the right positions. I hope you can see how well that has worked as it’s been done well in our shared life. So please prayerfully consider to what ministries at Zion you feel called to do, and when the openings are announced, consider what leadership gifts God might have you contribute to make Zion be all that God is calling us to be. On Friday, September 22, 2017, Autumn (my favorite time of year) will offi-cially arrive. There may be some heat left around, but soon cool nights and brisk days will be ours. To leverage their last bit of sunlight, the deciduous trees will shed their chlorophyll, deploy their carotenoids instead, and burst into color.

I really hope I didn’t just hear you groan…

As a church that does not have a “simplified leadership structure,” Zion has many positions that require appointment of the right people in the right positions. I hope you can see how well that has worked as it’s been done well in our shared life.

This month, our Nominations & Leadership Development Team and I will be working to discern our leadership needs and who might be best at fulfilling the various roles that help us, together, be an effective outpost of the Kingdom of God. We ask for and need your prayers.

But we also need your willingness to serve.

So please prayerfully consider to what ministries at Zion you feel called to do, and when the openings are announced, consider what leadership gifts God might have you contribute to make Zion be all that God is calling us to be.

Thanks! And Happy Fall! See article on page 3 about a seminar upcoming at Charleston UMC

Who doesn’t like to celebrate fall? The beautiful leaves, the invigorating air, the sound of tractors. Zion’s Fall Festival will be on October 22. Game ideas and lots of help are needed to make this happen. All ideas are welcome. Call Jane Shinn at 450-5100 to offer your suggestions.

Operation Christmas Child

Just a reminder, you have just TWO more months to collect your gifts for Opera-tion Christmas Child.

Millions of children around the world will be impacted by one small gift from you.

They will hear about God and learn something that will change their lives.

Pick up your supplies and information downstairs in the Fellowship Hall. Don’t forget to include a picture/letter or note about your family to help the children make the connection of where we are located, and who you are; and that you care enough to send them a box of love.

Can You Use Any of This in Your Ministry?

Recently, the closet in the Disciple Center next to the Seekers Classroom, was cleaned out. Several items were found which probably no one re-members we have. If you can use a outdoor Sun-day School banner, 4th of July decorations, post-er board, tri-fold display boards, a scare crow decoration or three wise men contact Janet Brase, 450-2182.

Children’s Church (CC) is charting new waters this fall. As we begin to refocus our efforts on our younger children at Zion, CC will begin Sept 10th and run through March 11th, on the 2nd

and 4th Sundays each month. Curriculum will be based on Character by God’s Design, Volume I, (Group) which focuses on Diligence, Gratitude and Faithfulness. Children ages 3 to 9 (3rd grade) are invited to attend CC. We ask that children that attend CC be potty trained. For those who are not, the nursery is available during the 8:00 am and 10:30 services. Chil-dren attending 4th grade and higher are asked to re-main in the regular service with their parents. See you in Children’s Church!

Note from the Church Office

Zion’s member/visitor data base seriously needs up-dating. Much information is outdated or incorrect. Please pick up your sheet off the table in the lobby and look over your entries (even if you have been attend-ing forever and nothing has changed).

This data is used for many purposes and so it is important that it be accurate.

Serve

With the Giveaway over it is time to focus on our next Serve project, Festival of Sharing. Festival of Sharing is an interfaith, state-wide, celebration and gathering of resources. Here at Zion we have committed to gathering supplies for the Readin’ & Writin’ Packs. If you would like to help this ministry by bringing in supplies from the list provided on the back cover please drop them off in the brown trunk in the main lob-by. These packs provide school supplies to children in need and are dispersed throughout Southeast Missouri. The children’s ministry will also help with this project. On Sunday, September 24th the children’s Sunday School classes will assist in putting the packs together,. Saturday, September 30th a group will take the packs to our drop off site at the First United Methodist Church in Dexter. The drop of site is known as Sharefest or a “mini-festival of sharing” where not only do they collect a wide variety of packs to distribute throughout the Southeast Region, but also bag beans, popcorn, and rice which are taken to local food pantries. The September rail offering will also go to support this mission. All helpers are welcome so if you are inter-ested in attending Sharefest contact Erica Keller at 573/225-8418.

United Methodist Women

There will not be a regular UMW meeting in September. Rather, Zion UMW will be hosting the Fall District meeting on Satur-

day, September 16. As many members as possible will be needed to provide our very best hospitality. We will be providing morning refreshments and lunch. If you can assist in anyway please contact Barbara Meinke (837-9909) or Lea Davis (225-1358). The registration is at 9:30am and the business meeting will start at 10:00am. The Mini Mission U will be held after lunch. The topic will be the spiritual growth study “Living as a Covenant Community”. The study examines major covenants throughout the Bible and what they reveal about God’s character and external love for us, enhancing our understanding of how God works with us, in us, and through us. All women are welcome to attend.

The Upper Room

Zion makes The Upper Room daily devotions, a publica-tion of The Upper Room Ministry, available at no charge. You can pick up a copy in the lobby or on the shelf in the foyer.

The Upper Room magazine’s mission is to provide a model of practical Christianity, accessible in varied formats, to help people feel invited and welcomed into God’s pres-ence to:

listen to scripture as God’s personal message, linking their stories to God’s story;

commune with God in prayer;

see their daily choices and small acts of obedience as part of God’s work;

realize our connection through Christ as a universal family of believers;

encounter the living Christ and be transformed into Christ’s likeness.

By all these lovely tokens September days are here, With summer’s best of weather And autumn’s best of cheer.
