Dear Colleagues,
I want to thank each one of you that chose to renew your
membership in the Alexandria Bar Association. Our bar association
is among the many volunteer local and specialty bars throughout
Virginia and we could not exist without you. At last count there
were still about 50 attorneys that have not renewed yet. We
sincerely hope that you will choose to be a member again and
continue to stay involved. One of the great programs offered by the
Alexandria Bar Association is our Lawyer Referral Service. Last
year the LRS referred 275 clients looking for legal services, and
this year’s numbers are off to a strong start. To keep our LRS
strong we need attorneys like you to sign up and be a part of the
attorney referral list. A few years ago, we launched an online LRS
service that streamlined participation for attorneys and clients.
This program is fully functional right now. We have room for as
many attorneys who want to participate in our LRS, but so far only
20 have signed up. Participating in the LRS is a great way to meet
new clients and provide much-needed legal services to clients that
would otherwise try to go it alone. Please consider signing up for
LRS and encourage lawyers in your office to do the same. The
September boat cruise was a great success. We had wonderful
weather, a military flyover, and great music provided by our own
Seth Obed. A big thank you to the bar staff for coordinating this
annual tradition. I also want to thank our sponsors: Carr
Workplaces; Redmond, Peyton & Braswell LLP; and Wade, Grimes,
Friedman, Meinken & Leischner PLLC. I know everyone who came
enjoyed it. We were honored to host Virginia State Bar President
Leonard Heath, Jr. As many of you know, or are starting to hear,
lawyer well being is a HUGE topic in Virginia this year. Mr. Heath
spoke about the importance of wellness not only to practicing
attorneys but also to law school students. I know many of you hire
law students as interns. I would encourage you to talk to these
students about the importance of wellness in their life as they
embark on their careers. The Bar Foundation held its annual Little
Theatre Event on Oct. 12, and it was a great success. The work
doesn’t end there, however. The Foundation accepts donations all
throughout the year. As a tax lawyer, I would be remiss if I didn’t
encourage you to consider contributing money directly to the
Foundation when you do your year-end tax planning. 2018 is the
first year that many of the new changes in the tax law go into
effect. Charitable contributions still provide an excellent way to
reduce your tax bill. I am really excited about our Bench / Bar
event this year. The date is going to be our normal third Thursday
membership meeting, December 20. I know everyone will want to come
and toast holiday cheer with your fellow colleagues. Our speaker
this year is Gene Rossi. Mr. Rossi spent three decades at the
Department of Justice as a federal prosecutor where he had more
than 110 federal trials. In 2001, he became an assistant U.S.
attorney in the Eastern District of Virginia (EDVA), which is known
as the “Rocket Docket.” There, he led and supervised a vast array
of significant investigations involving the opioid crisis, OCDETF,
murder, health care, tax, immigration, public corruption,
terrorism, and the environment. You can read more about him here:
https://www.carltonfields.com/team/r/gene-rossi. Did you know? Did
you know that the Virginia Bar Association started a new program
last year that allows local bar associations to be listed as an
Affiliated Bar? The Alexandria Bar Association is an affiliated bar
because we have three officers that are members of the VBA.
Benefits of affiliation extend to all of our members: use of the
VBA on Main member center, discounted rates for VBA events, and
access to the VBA legislative process. Sponsors! Do you know of a
business that could benefit from exposure to our membership? If so,
please consider asking them to sponsor one of our events. The bar
office has details on the many opportunities available. Dues
Working Group. The Board is launching a dues working group to
analyze our association’s dues structure and make recommendation
for next year. We need volunteers. Please contact the bar office if
you are interested.

Our Annual Membership Kick-Off event on the Miss Mallory Cruise
was a great success! We were fortunate with great weather again
this year! The sights and sounds along the Potomac were lively and
beautiful, and the military fly over was a nice surprise. Many
joined us for the delicious King Street Blues buffet, drinks and
lots of fun catching up with colleagues…and a happy birthday, too,
for Drew Hutcheson!
Continuing tradition, we welcomed aboard the president of the
Virginia State Bar for 2018-19, Leonard C. Heath Jr. Heath of
Newport News, was sworn in as the 80th president of the Virginia
State Bar on June 15, 2018, and is a partner at Heath, Overbey,
Verser & Old PLC. He spoke with the group about lawyer wellness
and mentoring young lawyers as well. We have a Lawyer Wellness
Committee this year and hope that you will join us as we make this
a priority for our membership.
Our cruise was sponsored this year by:
Wade Grimes Friedman Meinken & Leischner,
Redmon Peyton & Braswell and
Carr Workplaces (https://carrworkplaces.com/).
Dan Healy is our contact at Carr Workplaces. Please check out
the website and contact Dan at the Alexandria office with any
inquiries (703.647.7513 ).
We greatly appreciate the support of our sponsors and their
contribution to keeping this long-standing cruise tradition afloat!
If you or your organization would like to sponsor one of our
events, please let us know.

BEAT THE ODDS LITTLE THEATER EVENT
This year’s Little Theater event to benefit the Beat the Odds
Scholarship Program was a terrific success with a packed house to
see the Bram Stoker classic, Dracula (adaptation written by Steven
Dietz). It was a fabulous show and all who attended were impressed
with yet another great production at the Little Theater of
Alexandria. They are always so gracious to let us host our first
fund-raiser of the year for Beat the Odds at the theater. Thank you
LTA!
The out-pouring of support from Association members, guests, and
the community brought in roughly $3,000 in show tickets and $1,000
in raffle ticket sales. The top prize winner of the 50/50 cash
raffle was our own Bar Association President, Chris Wright! “I
never win anything,” says Chris, and he was so thrilled to win that
he donated his portion of the prize back to the Beat the Odds
scholarship fund! Thank you, Chris! Other prize winners were
Gretchyn Meinken (Spa gift certificate) and Misha Gill (Kazan
Restaurant gift card). Thanks to all who bought show and raffle
tickets!
Many thanks to Maana Parcham from the Commonwealth’s Attorney
Office, and Jeanne Franklin for “spearheading” this year’s event.
Your hard work paid off and the event was a huge success! Thank you
Maana and Jeanne! We hope to see many members attend the Beat the
Odds Awards Program and Dinner on Thursday, April 11th (save the
date!) at which time the scholarships will be awarded to many
deserving students from Alexandria. As a reminder, this awards
dinner also serves as the monthly membership dinner for April and
all current Association members are welcome to attend. The event
will take place in the Alexandria Courthouse on the 4th Floor.
If you were unable to attend the BTO event at the Little
Theater, but would like to contribute to the scholarship program,
please send your donation to the Bar Assoc. office (checks payable
to “The Alexandria Bar Foundation”) or call us and we can process a
credit card donation. (703-548-1106).
The October monthly membership dinner was held on October 18 at
the American Legion. Oktoberfest! Brats, pies and lots of good
company. Greg Wade was our guest speaker. It was great to hear his
interesting story of balancing life and work when his family moved
to Spain years ago.

Project Pegasus Night—
Our Meet the Barristers Night this year was on October 23, 2018
at O’Connell’s. We hosted the Pegasus Scholars : Jamie Scott of
Gray’s Inn and Anthony Eskander of Innter Temple. A highlight of
their Project Pegasus visit to the United States, of course, is the
warm reception the Alexandria Bar Association provides, culminating
with the award of our OFFICIAL Alexandria Bar Association pins in
an ancient ritual right out of bloody Harry Potter. Our President,
Chris Wright, presented the pins and O’Connell’s provided the
pints. A special thank you to Phoenix Ayotte for her tremendous
efforts in organizing this event.
This annual event is held in order to welcome the Pegasus
Scholars of the American Inns of Court. The Pegasus Scholarship
Trust is an exchange program, wherein young American Inns of Court
members visit London for six weeks to learn about the English legal
system and young English barristers visit the United States for six
weeks to learn about the American legal system. The English
barristers spent six weeks here and the American Inns of Court
planned their educational activities.
