COMMENTS FROM THE [email protected]

In the February issue of the “Cornsheller” I featured theSykes family. I listed Betty E. Koons wife of James RaySykes (page 3) as buried in Hopewell Baptist ChurchCemetery, Cunningham, Montgomery County, TN. Societymember Anthony (Tony) Smith is Betty’s nephew andbrought it to my attention that Betty is not buried there, butis living in Phoenix, AZ. I went back and double checkedmy information and realized her headstone has a birthdate, but not a death date; another learning experience to paymore attention to my data as you can see by the enclosedpicture.

Tony also noticed that I have his mother Marie’s and hisaunt Betty’s birthdates the same in my article. I got thedates from the census records. The census records are notalways correct and most of the time are just an educatedguess. Anthony (Tony’s ) mother Marie was born 24 Jan.1924.

If you notice errors in any of my information no matter howsmall , please do not hesitate to contact me. I have noproblem with making public corrections, and it is somethingthat needs to be corrected or it will stand as stated foreverThanks Tony; of course listing someone as deceased isnot a small thing!

If you haven’t read this month’s “Cumberland Lore” featur-ing Frank Sutton, it is a well written and interesting article. My husband rarely reads the articles, but pulls them out tosave for me. This month he did read the “CumberlandLore” and was very impressed by the article. Society mem-ber Billyfrank Morrison is the author. If you haven’t read thearticle you can find a copy at the Montgomery County Li-brary or the Montgomery County Archives. Billyfrank ispast president of the Montgomery County Historical Socie-ty and a Deltiologist (postcard collector). He has also pub-lished a postcard book for Montgomery County and one forFt. Campbell.

DESCENDANTS OF JOHN T MCCAULEY

When I decided to feature the McCauley family I found three brothersthat were Irish whose descendants were born in Montgomery CO TN.The problem was one group left and resided in Humphries CO TN andanother group went to AR. I decided to feature the John T. McCauleyfamily who remained in Montgomery CO TN.

John T McCauley son of Matthew and Catherine (Catred) JohnstedMcCauley was born in 1766 in Atrim, Ireland. He immigrated to Or-ange County NC at the age of 11 (" page 283 Humphreys County Heritage,Volume Two, 1983”). From there he came to Montgomery CO TN to liveand die and is buried here in the John McCauley Cemetery. John T.married Mary Polly (Betsy) Moore daughter of James and ElizabethHightower Moore 14 Sept. 1796 in Caswell CO NC. Mary Polly wasborn 1 Aug. 1778 in Lunenburg County VA and died in MontgomeryCO TN. She is also buried in the John McCauley Cemetery in Mont-gomery CO TN. Below is John T’s will:

15 April 1842, Tennessee

In the fear of God, Amen, I John McCauley of the county of Mont-gomery and the state of Tennessee, being not in perfect health, butThanks be to God, I have a perfect recollection of all my affairs onearth, and being admonished by age and infirmities that my stay onearth is short, and being properly in my right senses; I make andpublish this my last will and testimony, here by making null and voidall wills formerly and published at any time whatsoever.

First I resign my soul into the hands of Him who gave it, hoping hewill receive into Home and permit me to have part in the first resur-rection, then I pray god that my dear wives and children may all meettogether again to spend an ever ending eternity of bliss together,Amen.

I wish to be decently buried in the family burying ground. I wish myExecutors to pay all my just debts out of any money in my posses-sion or that first comes in their possession after my decease. I giveunto my well beloved wife, Elizabeth. McCauley, my mansion house;to occupy so long as she lives. I order that she take as much of thehousehold and kitchen furniture as she needs for her own use. I giveunto her my negro man Henry, and my negro woman, Fanny, andtheir increase, to labor for her during her life time. I order her to takeas much of my stock as she has need for. I will that my wife have thepossession and benefit of the following pieces of land bounded thus:

Beginning at the mouth of the following lane near the Spring thatMitchell Trotter now uses the water from, running north with said landup to the crop lane near the house that Mitchell Trotter now lives, then West with the lane until it intersects with the lane that runs near-ly North from the upper part of the mill pond, thence due North to theSouth boundry line of a piece of land that I gave Rosanna Harris, thence west to a piece of Parkerson's line, thence South with saidParkersons's line, to Matthew McCauley's North corner, thence withsaid McCauley's line to the beginning including the saw mill and gristmill and all the other improvements on said land. The other piecesthat I will give her is on the McAdee Creek where she formerly livedbefore we were married. I will that she have the profits from both theabove named pieces of land and my half of the mills during her natu-ral life, and I hereby give her full power and authority to pay a resona-ble compensation to anyone of my children who may take the troubleof helping her to live comfortably and plentifully during her life time. Then said pay or compensation to be made out of the property heregiven her if necessary and at her death all the property in her posses-sion, together with its increase, is to be equally divided among all mychildren.

I have now lived to see all my children grown and now acknowledgeeleven heirs to-wit. William, John Jr., Elizabeth, Mathew, Daniel,Mary, Polly, Rosanna, Nancy Tuck, George, Angelion, and Susan. Allof whom are near and dear to me.

George Boyd son of George Johnston and Elizabeth (Bettie)McCauley was born in 1844 and died 7 Feb. 1862 in Clarksville,Montgomery CO TN. He was buried at the Clarksville FemaleAcademy, Clarksville, Montgomery CO TN. Below is a copy ofGeorge Boyd’s obituary from the Clarksville Leaf Chronicle,Clarksville, TN.

February 14, 1862 - - - Died, at the residence of his brother, Dr. R.D.McCauley, in this city, on Friday, the 7th, George Boyd mcCauley, sonof George J. McCauley, Esq., of this county, in the 18th year of his age.

This estimable young man volunteered in the service of his nativeSouth, in Col. Sugg’s company, and went to Fort Donelson with it. Dur-ing a temporary service of his company, at Fort henry, he was takenwith pneumonia, and was brought to this city, very ill. Here at his broth-er’s he had every attention and aid that the devoted love of Father, mother, Brothers and Sister, and medical skill could render, but all invain. Death had lain his ivy hand upon him but too surely, and his nameis another added to the dad list of those whose life is the price of libertywe are struggling to secure. The deceased was a young man of finemental endowment and generous amiable disposition - - - one who, notonly in his family, but also among his associates, was an esteemedfavorite. He might reasonably have looked forward to a career of useful-ness and honor, had he lived, but alas! No more for him can life haveany prize, or ambition hold out any charm. He has fallen in the verySpringtime of his life, yet fallen full of honors of the young soldier. Hisfelloe soldiers bear testimony to his worth in the camp, and his eager-ness for action in the field, and a grateful country will embalm his namein her annals, when those shall be gathered who gave their life for herliberty.

One so young as George, full of this ambition and hopes of a soldier, would, we should think, naturally shrink in terror, at the idea of dying, yet he met death calmly and resignedly. Something more or better thanthe nerve of a soldier sustained him. He had, several months ago, made a profession of religion, and joined the M.C. Church and died witha bright consciousness that he was only receiving his transfer from thecamps and battles of earth to rest and reward of Heaven.

Penelope (Neppe) A. daughter of George Johnston and Eliza-beth (Bettie) McCauley was born Aug. 1858 in Montgomery COTN and died 4 Jan. 1901 in Clarksville, Montgomery CO TN atthe age of 52. Penelope (Neppe) A. married James EdwardMoseley in 1870 in Montgomery CO TN. He was listed in the1880 census as a sheriff. James Edward was born Aug. 1843 inMontgomery CO TN and died in 1915 in Clarksville, Montgom-ery CO TN at the age of 72. Penelope (Neppe) A. and JamesEdward Moseley had children: James, Edna E., Florence, Ma-mie E. and George. Penelope (Neppe) A. inherited the familyhome. A Historical Show and Tell

The Programs Committee decided to conduct a non-traditionalprogram for March. All the teachers in the Society will get achuckle out of this – we are having a Show and Tell session with ahistory theme. I believe members and guests will find this bothinteresting and informative.

Five Society members will show vintage collectible(s) that are re-lated to Montgomery County. They will tell about the item(s) in a 5minute presentation. After the meeting the items will be availablefor viewing and the presenters available to field your questions.

Those presenting include County Historian, Eleanor Williams;Past President Randy Rubel; The talented and knowledgeable Lin-da Long; Past President Billyfrank Morrison; and one more indi-vidual who has not been identified, captured and water boardedyet. We thought we had the fifth presenter when Inga Filippocame forward but a closer check of Society By-laws revealed thatJoe does not qualify as a “vintage item”. So . . . if you have some-thing out of the past you would like to show and tell contact Bil-lyfrank at 648-2383 and be our final show and tell presenter.

Every meeting should have a contingency plan and this one does.If things get dull or slow - Linda and I will sing and Eleanor andRandy have agreed to do a little soft shoe dance routine. In addi-tion, I have promised Miss Rubye that if this does not pan out – Iwill leave town immediately after the meeting on the last, lasttrain to Clarksville. That possibility alone is good reason for mem-bers to attend. Hope to see all of you at 7 PM March 18 at the CivicCenter.

Breaking News: Mark Clark has agreed to be a participant in theShow & Tell and Molly Cook is considering it as well. So – Theprogram is looking good.
