I hope you will indulge a few personal thoughts this New Year. You may know that I recently lost a very dear friend in a traffic accident. That loss has had an impact on our family in ways which we would not really have expected, of course grief, but so many positive things too, that I have noticed along the way. My friend was a woman of purpose. Every- thing she did, she did deliberately. She was a savvy, professional, no-nonsense business woman who knew her stuff and was always taken seriously. But after the business deal was done, she could go smoke a cigar and have a martini with the best of them, all while rockin’ a stylish business suit and 5- inch Louboutin stilettos. But that’s not the woman who was so pre- cious to me. No, that woman was the one who was absolutely crazy about her two boys; a die-hard soccer mom and band par- ent. She is the woman who invested of her- self in others; who took my son to see Rob Zombie (yes, she was THAT cool), who baked cookies with my girls for no reason, who told them they can do ANYTHING they set their mind to, and gave such wise counsel to my older daughter as a young mom. She made absolutely everyone who knew her feel like they were the most important person in the room. I know that my life is forever better for hav- ing had her in it. This New Year, my hope is that we will not only all HAVE that kind of person in our lives, but that we will all work to BE that person in the lives of others. There aren’t any bad days ……. Wagoner County—Growing from Good” to Great”!
I hope you will indulge a few personal
thoughts this New Year. You may know that I
recently lost a very dear friend in a traffic
accident. That loss has had an impact on
our family in ways which we would not really
have expected, of course grief, but so many
positive things too, that I have noticed along
the way.
My friend was a woman of purpose. Every-
thing she did, she did deliberately. She was
a savvy, professional, no-nonsense business
woman who knew her stuff and was always
taken seriously. But after the business deal
was done, she could go smoke a cigar and
have a martini with the best of them, all
while rockin’ a stylish business suit and 5-
inch Louboutin stilettos.
But that’s not the woman who was so pre-
cious to me. No, that woman was the one
who was absolutely crazy about her two
boys; a die-hard soccer mom and band par-
ent. She is the woman who invested of her-
self in others; who took my son to see Rob
Zombie (yes, she was THAT cool), who baked
cookies with my girls for no reason, who told
them they can do ANYTHING they set their
mind to, and gave such wise counsel to my
older daughter as a young mom. She made
absolutely everyone who knew her feel like
they were the most important person in the
room.
I know that my life is forever better for hav-
ing had her in it. This New Year, my hope is
that we will not only all HAVE that kind of
person in our lives, but that we will all work
to BE that person in the lives of others.

YOU AND YOUR BUDGETYOU AND YOUR BUDGETYOU AND YOUR BUDGETYOU AND YOUR BUDGET …………. …………. …………. …………. Continuing our series of articles regarding common ways people waste money, here are other detriments to our budgets:
Going Overboard on Parties
Whatever happened to inviting the
neighborhood kids over to your house for birthday cake, ice cream and a few
games? Now families are spending hundreds - even thousands -- of dollars
on over-the-top birthday party venues, catered meals and elaborate gift
bags for each guest. The truth is that most kids just want to spend time with
friends playing games, opening a few gifts and indulging in a little junk food.
So resist the urge to spend more than necessary.
And then there are weddings. Don't get us wrong: We love
weddings. We just don't like the $28,000 average bill that accompanies
couples down the aisle. Starting your newlywed life under a crushing debt
load is a bad idea. Rein in your wedding costs and do your marriage a favor.
(And don't forget that outrageous price tag on your parents, who are trying
to save for retirement and may have just helped you pay for your education.)
