The words give a feeling of light heartedness and opti- mism. We Civitans embrace the idea with all the fervor we show in our projects and our dedication to servicing the needs of our communities. Summer never seems to slow us down when it comes to helping others. A favorite summer activity is traveling to the annual Civitan International Convention. This year we’re celebrating our 99 th year as an international organization in Norfolk, Virginia on July 13 – 16. In addition to learning more about the organiza- tion, we’ll meet new and old friends and share many stories of accomplishment. Fun will also be a big part of our activi- ties. Check the Civitan website www.civitan.org for last minute information. It is never too late to attend the convention. Our summer ends with our Florida District Convention on September 9 & 10 at the Crowne Plaza Melbourne-Oceanfront hotel located on Melbourne Beach. We are planning fun and informative activities along with the installation of our new District Officers who will lead us in our 100 th Anniversary year. Our International President Debbie Juhlke will be attending as our invited guest. I hope you will plan to attend. Information about the event is included in this edition of the Sunbeam. I was honored to attend the Florida District Junior Civitan convention was held in Sanford, Florida on April 23, 2016. I am always amazed by the enthusiasm displayed by the Junior Civitans. It was my privilege to present one of Florida District’s Don DeVane scholarships to Jayla Pinkney, of Jacksonville’s Sandalwood High School Junior Civitan Club. She was most grateful and thanked all Florida Civitans for the honor. The entire day was a success including the great “universe” presen- tation that was given by the planetarium. I want to congratulate our Junior Chair, Penny Bonawitz, on a great District con- vention and also her selection as the next International Chair Representative on the International Junior Board. Penny was also nominated by her Florida District Junior Board for Outstanding District Junior Chair at the International Junior Con- vention. Someone else did take home the honor but we know there is always next year. She did, however, receive her Master Club Builder’s jacket for chartering at least five Junior Civitan clubs. Congratulations Penny! One of those clubs was the new community based Tampa Bay Junior Civitan Club which I chartered on May 27, 2016. The second Don DeVane scholarship was awarded to Charlotte Wollermann of Lawton Chiles High School Junior Civitan Club at the Tallahassee Civitan Club luncheon meeting on May 19, 2016. I was able to attend and presented a very grate- ful Charlotte with her award. Thank you, Tallahassee Club, for hosting the event. On May 24, 2016, I attended the 33 rd Anniversary celebration luncheon for the Uptown Civitan Club in Jacksonville. It was a lovely event with an original Civitan song performed by Uptown Civitan Wynester Sherrer. Descrip- tions of many previous Uptown events were given by different members. Congratulations, Uptown Civitan, and thank you for the invitation. I hope to see you at the District Convention in Melbourne on September 9 & 10. 2016. Have a happy and safe summer. “ WE ARE THE KEYS TO SUCCESS!” - Helen Galloway

Congratulations to Wynester Sherrer, Past President of the Uptown Civitan, for the heartfelt article she shared in theSpring 2016 Civitan Magazine. She provided us a wonderful reminder of how we are the keys to success – for our commu-nity. She said, “I am Civitan. The more I get involved, the greater my passion grows. I love the idea of enriching the livesof others through service. The International Creed states, ‘My hands do the work of the world and reach out in service toothers’ is an essential part of my live. Very little can compare to the essence of truly being blessed to actually volunteer orgive back to others unselfishly. Uptown Civitan, in addition to my church, has afforded me this amazing opportunity.”

If you have not already done so, please read the remainder of her article. And, remember how important we can be toothers. We have almost three more months this year to invite more members to join our clubs and feel the enrichment inour lives that we feel. Let’s build and move our clubs forward -- We are the Key!!

It’s been a busy quarter for the Fabulous Florida District Junior Civitans. The Junior Civitan International Convention was held on June 23rd at the Double Tree in Marietta Georgia. The theme thisyear is “Rooted In Service”. Florida’s Junior Lt. Gov. Hannah Kimble attended with chair Penny Bonawitz. The weekend wasamazing with a wonderful time reconnecting with friends from across the country and Canada. Penny was elected to theInternational Chair position on the Junior Civitan International board and also received her Master Club builder jacket.Hannah accepted the awards for Honor Club for Bishop Moore JCC, third place Joint Junior-Senior Project for BishopMoore and Frontier Clubs, third place District of the Year for Florida District and GOVERNOR OF THE YEAR for our fabulousGovernor, Benjamin Nguyen!

Againthank you for all your support!

Hello everyone, my name is MichaelaChua, and I was elected as the 2016-2017 Junior Civitan Florida DistrictGovernor. Junior Civitan is a commu-nity service organization for students.Junior Civitan members seek to meet

the needs of our world and promote progress in a world ofchange. As governor, my goal is not only to lead the district, but also to raise money for Sno-Do. Sno-Do (pronounced“snow dough”) is a Junior Civitan fundraising, cross-countrysnowmobile event held annually in Ontario, Canada. All pro-ceeds benefit people with developmental disabilities. I need to raise a minimum of $1800, but I hope to exceed thatamount because going beyond what is asked is what serviceis all about. Please help me achieve my goal by donating!

Treasure Coast Civitan Club…Ruthann Hewson & Polly Forestier

On May 26 Treasure Coast Civitan had a fun last meeting before summer break, where members told something about themselves the rest of the group did notknow. They were honored to have Area Director and Naples Civitan President BobKircher and his wife Nery join them and share their stories. The club discovered Civi-tans have talent unexplored and learned things like: Who traveled the world with herPhD/Masters daughter? Who’s a master fisherman? Who was accosted on aflight? Who worked for the FBI? Who was born in Cuba and spent time in a prisoncamp as a teen? Who worked & traveled in the food business? Bob presented Presi-dent Polly Forestier with a plaque honoring her as a Distinguished President and twobanner patches Bob had accepted on their behalf at the Florida District meeting. Bob & Polly presented Jim Reneau witha beautiful plaque from Civitan International celebrating 50+ years of membership.
