On top of the normal day-to-day teaching, we will be under- taking a rigorous self-study in prepara- tion for an accreditation team’s visit in the spring. That process will involve an extensive amount of reflection on our current practices, our planning for the future, and our accompanying docu- mentation. All constituents participating in and impacted by our program (board, administration, faculty, staff, students, parents, and community members) will be involved in some aspect of this process. Both via the process itself and through the subsequent recommenda- tions of the visiting team, we desire to grow and mature in our capacity to de- liver to our students “an education that is excellent and which instills Biblical principles to guide their lives.” As much as this sort of outside ac- countability and thorough introspec- tion can be a good and necessary thing, there are inherent dangers. Any time humans (and, by extension, human institutions) look at themselves long enough, there will be a tendency to love what we see (leading to pride) or hate what we see (leading to despair). Part of the biblical antidote to that is to force our self-evaluation through the filter of God’s assessment of us and our ef- forts. Through His Word, we learn that our greatest achievements are but filthy rags and our weakest efforts can be used in mighty ways. However, another valid biblical solution for preventing self- reflection from turning into a narcissis- tic self-absorption is to get our eyes off of ourselves and to look to ways we can serve others. Hence, in a year that a large amount of self-study is required, I have chosen for our theme “A Blessing to be Shared.” In Matthew 10:1-8, Jesus tells the disciples that they have been imbued with some remarkable, mi- raculous gifts. These gifts will soon be used to further the spread of the King- dom. Knowing their hearts, though, He instructed them not to hoard these gifts, to somehow use them for their own benefit, but to pour them out gener- ously for the benefit of a lost and dying world. His foundational rationale for that instruction comes in verse 8 when he reminds them that “Freely you have received, freely give.” The benefits of a Decatur Heritage education are many. Our students will become repositories of great stores of knowledge and skills. We live in a world where the (encouraged) sole pragmatic benefit of that would be to acquire a better job and greater wealth and pres- tige. We endeavor to teach that the ben- efits accruing to our students are kept in stewardship for the purpose of better serving others and honoring God. In our newsletter this year, I will delineate ways in which our school strives to teach our students to share the blessings of their education with others, both now and af- ter they graduate. “CENTER FOR EXCELLENCE” SUMMER 2010‘INSPIRE the HEART and CHALLENGE the MIND’

The month of June was filled with a host of activities. The goal for CENTER FOR EXCELLENCE was to offer, not only to Decatur Heritage students but to all students in the Decatur area, opportunities to discover the world through scholarship, exploration and participation! The event led by Mrs. Brenda Smith offered fishing, chemistry, robotics, jazz dancing, art, book clubs, cooking, athletic camps, individual academic instruction, and much more! More than 160 students participated!

Vanderbilt student John Woller demonstrates measurement and weight in “Crazy CHEMworks” to Colby Reeves, who attends Chestnut Grove.

Recently, James Vinton was chosen to participate in the Joe Wheeler Youth Tour in Montgomery. He was one of three students from the north Alabama area chosen to receive a $1,500 youth tour scholarship and an all-expense paid trip to Washington D.C. James, along with forty-four students from across the state, traveled to Washington, D.C. the week of June 12-17. The week was spent touring historical sites in

Washington. Some of James’ favorites included visiting the Capitol, eating at the Hard Rock Café and the Sunset Parade where the Marine Band performed and honored fallen Marines with gun formations and salutes. Congratulations, James!

Jerrie Ash, loving mother to our K-12 Chief Learning Leader, Jeremy Jones, and grandmother to Walker, Will and Katie, went home to be with the Lord in June. She spent her work career as a registered nurse at Parkway Medical Center and an

intake supervisor for Blue Cross and Blue Shield Insurance Co. of Alabama.A close friend of Mrs. Ash described her as the most giving person she has ever known. She was unsel!sh, never drawing attention or honor to herself but always giving and ministering to others. "e friend continued, “Jerrie was the most inspirational person I have ever known. She always knew what to say and when to call or visit. She will be greatly missed by many, many people.”"e Decatur Heritage family extends its most heartfelt sympathy to Jeremy, Rosellen, Walker, Will and Katie.

DHCA 6th GRADE WASHINGTON DC TRIPLate afternoon on Wednesday, May 12, fourteen sixth graders, nine parents and two teachers boarded a brand new 55-passenger bus headed to our nation’s capital. Friday morning began the jam-packed tour of Washington with a tour of the Capitol led by Congressman Robert Alderholt and his staff.

During the four-day stay, the students toured the Supreme Court, Library of Congress, National Gallery of Art, Ford’s Theatre, Arlington Cemetery, the war memorials, Albert Einstein Memorial, Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials, the Smithsonian museums, the National Archives, the 9-11 Memorial at the Pentagon, Washington Monument, the White House, Mount Vernon, Iwo Jima and the FDR Memorial.

The group is pictured above after attending worship service on Sunday morning at the National Cathedral. Three of our students, Kyle Lash, Luke Bolan and Taylor Bolan were honored to deliver the communion to the table during the service.

Plans for the May 2011 trip will begin early in the new school year for 6th grade students. Fundraising will begin so that all sixth graders will be able to attend.

The graduating classes of 1999 and 2000 held a joint ten-year class reunion May 22, 2010, at Fulins Asian Restaurant in Decatur.

Nine alumni attended the event. They are pictured above left to right: Emily Hicks Garcia, Jennifer Reynolds, Kyle Wells, Alison McNutt Prevatt, Chris Gilliland, Emily Keenum Solomon, Jon Piper, Anne DeKoker and Heather Harris.

The evening was spent sharing memories and telling stories of their experiences during their time at Decatur Heritage. The highlight of the evening was speaking via Skype to fellow alumnus Maria Doerter Caceres who lives in Chile with her husband.

The reunion was a success and the classes of 1999 and 2000 are looking forward to keeping in touch with one another and getting together again soon!
