The Grade One’s have had a great first half of the school year! They have been busy learning all sorts of new things.
This month, we are focusing on finishing up our Addition and Subtraction unit in Math and starting on our Measurement unit. In ELA, they are working hard at learning how to read and using their creativity to write their own books and stories.
The students have been practicing and work-ing hard at preparing for our Division 1 As-sembly coming up on February 16
th. Hope
to see you there!
Coming up in March, the Grade One’s will be lucky enough to be a part of swimming lessons in Swift Current. We are looking for-ward to an exciting and busy second half of the school year!
Did you know that
on February 9th,
we will have been
in school for 100
Days? WOW!!
In Kindergarten, during the month of February,
we will learn about Groundhog Day and Valen-
tine's Day! A friendship theme will be linked to
our Valentine's Day activities.
All year in the classroom we
work on getting along with our
friends, sharing with one an-
other and helping each other,
but these things will be further emphasized this
month.
Following a visit from Mrs. Eidsness-Anderson
in January, Kindergarten students will enjoy
using orff instruments during music. The
students enjoyed her introduction to playing
these instruments and are excited to explore
new activities with them in February!
It will be a fun and exciting month in
Kindergarten!
Students in Grade 2 think school is AWESOME!
We are doing cool things in Grade 2.
We got new desks and we love them.
Skating was so much fun.
Maps are cool.
We like reading and drawing maps.
In Art we are making plastercine things.
Making healthy foods is awesome.
We enjoy playing instruments. We wrote our
own stories and it was sweet.
In Math booklets we work at our own pace to
learn adding and subtracting strategies.
We had a great time making snowflakes.
We are getting ready for Assembly on February
16th as fast as we can go.
Grade Two is awesome!!!

The Grade 3 and 4’s have the Scoop on Multiplication! The grade 3 and 4's
have been working
very hard to master
their multiplication
facts up to
12x12. Students have the chance to
earn a towering ice cream sundae by
knowing each of their facts. They have to
earn each part; from the napkin and
spoon, to the marshmallow, sprinkles,
cookie crumble, and other delicious top-
pings! We will be celebrating our fact
mastery sometime before the February
break!
Hitting the Ice! This year the weather has cooperated so
that we could enjoy Waldeck's outdoor
rink. We have spent a lot of time working
on our skating skills, playing hockey, help-
ing each other, and playing cooperative
games. We are hoping to hit the ice a
few more times before winter is over!
Please remember to notify your child’s
homeroom teacher when there is a change
in plans in picking your child up after
school. The school requires:
- A note in your child’s agenda
planner from the parent/guardian, and
- if your child is a Bus Student - A
phone call or note to the busdriver to
indicate a change of plans. (ie child is
not going home on the bus.)
For your child’s safety, we cannot take a
student’s word about a change of plans
without confirmation from the parent/
guardian. With combined classes in the
afternoon, various teachers are dismissing the
students from their homerooms so it is im-
portant that the school is made aware of any
changes early in the day to avoid
confusion for your child.
Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Reminder to Parents/Guardians Re: Communication
Grade 5/6 have been very busy in the new year! Many of the grade five and six girls are on the basketball team and performing very well as young players facing often taller and older students on opposing teams. Academically, the grade six students are busy learning about multiplying, dividing and estimating with decimals and different ways to estimate in their math class. Similarly the grade five students are also working on estimating in math class. In E.L.A., the grade five and six students are starting a novel relating to multiculturalism in the 1800's and how it often played out in the 1800's in Canada and the United States. Human body systems is the focus for Science this month. Basketball has been a focus in Phys. Ed. class for the last month. Students have been honing their skills with dribbling, passing and shooting. Occasionally when the weather has been suitable, students had a few outdoor classes enjoying the opportunity to skate and play shinny in the rink. French class has the students learning about the verb, aimer, (to like), and putting that together with various sports to create questions and sentences related to the topic. This is just a tiny snapshot of what the students have been learning in January and Feb-ruary! Have a wonderful February!
Page 5 Volume 107, Issue 6
In Junior High the learning continues...
Grade 7/8 ELA - We are currently working on a unit called Spies Among Us where we focus on the question "Is spying justified?" They are listening to a book in a spy novel series called S.T.O.R.M. The Black Sphere. And students are also reading non-fiction texts regarding spy work.
In Gr. 9 ELA, the students just finished reading the book, The Water Wars by Cameron Stracher. The book provided us with lots of discussion around the world's use of water, water conservation, and in some parts the lack thereof. The book was set in a dystopian future and centered around the adventures of three teenage students. The book was a fun read and real-ly encouraged the class to think critically about the world's use of water. Currently, we are focusing on an extended unit related to grammar, punctuation, and word us-age. Students are working very hard at improving in some of the areas; our writing improves by the day!
Grade 7/8 in Social are learning about how land is important to Canadians. This includes learning lots of things about what Treaties are and how land is important to First Nations and immigrants. We will be testing on this unit shortly.
Grade 7/8 Science - Right now we are in the middle of a unit on Cells, Tissues, Organs, and Body Systems. Our class just completed a project on the cell where they either made a cell model, created an analogy poster about the cell, or created a cell rap. They were very well done! We are now focusing on how water and nutrients move in and out of the cell through the cell membrane.
Grade 7 Math - In math we are in the middle of a unit on Fractions, Decimals, and Percents. We are learning how to add, subtract, multiply and divide deci-mals, and will be moving on to focus more on how use percentages. Grade 8 Math - Before the Christmas break we finished out unit on Fractions.
We have moved into looking at percents and how to calculate Sales Tax and GST on items we buy at the store! The next part of this unit will be spent learning about Ratios and Rates! Math 9 - Our class has been spending the time since Christmas working with Polynomials. In this unit we have been able to build on and apply our integer rules from previous years as we looked at different types of algebraic expressions. We will be moving on to inequalities next!
Sr. Girls Basketball - The senior girls have been having a fantastic sea-
son currently sitting at an 8-1 record! They are an amazing group of girls
who work so hard in practice and in games, and support each other both on
and off the court. We are all so proud of them.
January had us up against teams such as Central, Irwin, Herbert, Centennial
and Fairview and in some games we have had the opportunity to focus
more on playing our younger players, which was very exciting for them.
We have shown a lot of growth from last year and the girls are consistently
demonstrating the skills we work on in practice out on the court.
We also hosted Fairview, Centennial and Herbert for our 4 on 4 tourna-
ment. It was really exciting with almost every game providing close scores
and nail-biting action. The girls came out on top in the end and won the
tournament. Both the boys and girls won their 4 on 4 tournaments this year,
which is the first time this has happened in a long time, if ever at all! So
congrats Warriors.
This month we will host both Central on Thurs the 1st and the All Saints on
Thurs the 8th. Come on out and cheer the girls on!

PINK DAY—Wednesday, February 28th
Dear families and friends,
We invite you to support us in celebrating Red Cross Pink Day on Wednesday February 28th, 2018.
WHAT IS RED CROSS PINK DAY? It is a campaign that provides students with the opportunity to ad-
dress bullying behavior with a focus on that actions have impacts and we all have the power to make ours
bold in the face of bullying behavior.
On, Wednesday February 28th, 2018, students and staff will be wearing PINK to show that they are taking
a stand against bullying.
HOW DID IT GET STARTED? In 2007, a Grade 9 student in Cambridge, Nova Scotia was bullied by class-
mates for wearing a pink shirt to school. Taking notice, two Grade 12 students named Travis Price and Da-
vid Shepherd rallied their friends to send a message. The next day the halls were filled with students in pink
shirts. This ignited the Pink Day campaign, aimed at bringing together schools and communities throughout
Canada to promote the idea that actions have impacts; make yours bold in the face of bullying behavior!
PINK DAY AT Waldeck School—Wednesday, February 28th
Thank you for your support and partnership
Carrie Chambers – School Counsellor
On February 28, 2018, we encourage everyone to practice kindness and wear
pink to symbolize that you do not tolerate bullying.

Sr. Boys Basketball - The Boys
Basketball team continues to
strive! They worked hard to
win 1st Place at our 4-on-4
WIT Tournament against some
very strong teams. Our SWAC
regular season is coming to
an end and the Warriors have
finished in 2nd place with only
1 loss the entire season! Way
to go Warriors!!
This means that we will be
hosting our first playoff game
on Thursday, February 8th.
Come out and cheer on your
Warriors!

Each year the School Community Council chooses a goal on
which to focus. This year the goal can be summed up in one
word...community! Creating and improving a healthy com-
munity provides an environment of safety,
encouragement, and support; a place where people can be
challenged to grow. Communities thrive when people are
better connected and that has been the aim of the SCC
through the various events we have planned. Here is a look
at the events we have planned and supported to date:
September 29th - Terry Fox School Run
October 20th - Cowboy Community Pancake Breakfast
October 31st - Interhouse Kickoff
December 8th—Waldeck Community Christmas Festival
and Caroling
School Bulletin Board - A portrayal of all the community-
related events to date! Come have a look!
Stay tuned for more up and coming events!
We will keep focusing on engaging and im-
proving our community through various out-
reach efforts. If you have any ideas or sug-
gestions, please feel free to forward them
to one of our SCC members.
The members are Rachelle Patzer, Jill Martens, Loni
Chubaty, Honey Martens, Kelly Petras, Naomi Greenwood,
and Crystal Blades.
