5 Detailed Calculations for Electrical Cable Sizing and Voltage Drop
5.1 Cable Sizing Calculation for 3.6/6(7.2)kV Cable Circuit Between 450kVA,33/3.3/0.415kV Transformer
and HV Switchgear. The 3.3kV winding has a capacity of 425kVA.
a) Full Load Current Carrying Capacity is Calculated as below
Rated Transformer Power kVA = 425 kVA
Operating voltage on the MV winding of Transformer shall vary depending on the actual connected motorrated voltage. We consider the minimum operating voltage of the trafo as per available taps.Hence we consider Transformer Primary Voltage kV = 0.901 kV
Full Load Current IL = [kVA / (SQRT(3)*kV)]
= 272.34 A
We select 150mm2 cable for our sizing calculation
6kV,1Cx150mm2 cable current rating I = 451 AAs per manufacturer catalogue in section 6.
Total derating factor as per section 4.1.4 Dtot = 0.76
6kV,1Cx150mm2 cable derated current ID = Dt * I
= 342.76 A
Number of runs required per phase N = IL / ID
= 0.795
Since this ratio is less than "1" we need only one run of 1Cx150mm 2 cable.
b) Short Circuit Current Carrying Capacity is Calculated as below
Fault MVA based on Transformer Impedance MVAF = [Rated kVA / Impedance] MVA
Rated Power of the Transformer kVA = 425 kVA
Nominal Impedance of the Transformer % = 5 %
Fault MVA based on Transformer Impedance MVAF = 8.5 MVA
Healthy Line to Line Voltage prior to Fault kVL-L = 0.901 kV
Fault Current Based on the Above MVA = [MVAF / (SQRT(3)*kVL-L)]
= 5.447 kA
As per the cable manufacturer the copper conductor can withstand a short-circuit current of 21.5 kAfor 1 sec. Please refer section 6.
Since the fault current calculated is well below the rated short circuit current, the selected cableis adequate.

c) Voltage Drop Calculation
Voltage Drop Allowed as per ADCO specification = 3 %
Voltage Drop Allowed VDA = 27.03 V
Milli Voltage Drop for 1Cx150mm 2 mV = 0.3 mV/A/m
Load Current I = 272.3 A
Cable Route Length(Max.) L = 12 m
Voltage Drop Actual VDACT = (mV * I * L/1000) V
= 0.98 V
Since the Voltage Drop Actual(VDACT) is much less than the Voltage Drop Allowed(VDA) the cable size is adequate.

5.2 Cable Sizing Calculation for 0.6/1kV Cable Circuit Between Trafo 25kVA (415V) tertiary winding
and 415V Switchgear
a) Full Load Current Carrying Capacity is Calculated as below
Rated Transformer Power kVA = 25 kVA
Rated Transformer Secondary Voltage kV = 0.415 kV
Full Load Current IL = [kVA / (SQRT(3)*kV)]
= 34.781 A
We select 4Cx35mm2 cable for our sizing calculation
0.6/1kV,4Cx35mm2 cable tabulated current I = 162As per manufacturer catalogue in section 6.
Total derating factor as per section 4.2.4 Dtot = 0.5472
0.6/1kV,4Cx35mm2 cable Derated current ID = Dt * I
= 88.646
Number of runs required per phase N = IL / ID
= 0.392
Since this ratio is less than "1" we need only one run of 4Cx35mm 2 cable.
b) Short Circuit Current Carrying Capacity is Calculated as below
Fault MVA based on Transformer Impedance MVAF = [Rated kVA / Impedance] MVA
Rated Power of the Transformer kVA = 25 kVA
Approx Impedance of the Transformer on 415V winding % = 1 %
Fault MVA based on Transformer Impedance MVAF = 2.50 MVA
Healthy Line to Line Voltage prior to Fault kVL-L = 0.415 kV
Fault Current Based on the Above MVA IF = [MVAF / (SQRT(3)*kVL-L)]
= 3.478 kA
As per the cable manufacturer the copper conductor can withstand a short-circuit current of 5 kA for 1 sec. Please refer section 6 for details.
Since the fault current calculated is well below the rated short circuit current, the cable size is adequate.

0.6/1.0kV,4Cx16mm 2 cable Derated current ID = Dtot * I
= 54.173 A
Number of runs required per phase N = IL / ID
= 1.163
Since this ratio is less than "1" we need only one run of 4Cx16mm 2 cable.
b) Short Circuit Current Carrying Capacity is Calculated as below
MCCB Magnetic setting I>> A = 600 AMCCB used is Siemens 3VL2706-1EJ43-0AA0 with Ir=63A, I>> = 600A, Ti= 1.957sec
MCCB operating time for the above current s = 1.957 s
Thermal Let through energy from the MCCB I2tMCCB = (600)2 * 1.957
= 704520
Short-circuit current of cable as per manufacturer's data A = 2290 A
Short-circuit current duration of the cable s = 1 s
Thermal withstand energy of the cable I2tC = (2290)2 * 1
= 5244100
Since the Cable I2t (5244100) is well above the MCCB I2t (704520) , We conclude that the available MCCBwill protect the Cable.
c) Voltage Drop Calculation
Voltage Drop Allowed as per ADCO specification = 3 %
Voltage Drop Allowed VDA = 12.45 V
Milli Voltage Drop for 4Cx16mm 2 mV = 2.5 mV/A/m
Load Current I = 63 A
Cable Route Length (Max.) L = 11 m
Voltage Drop Actual VDACT = (mV * I * L/1000) V
= 1.733 V
Since the Voltage Drop Actual(VDACT) is much less than the Voltage Drop Allowed(VDA) the cable size is adequate.
