The wonderful folks at the RIO received an especially bountiful Garden Therapy activity in the month of March. The activities began with a nod to “Fat Tuesday” where volunteers Teresa Whitney, Bette Langford, Lana Doyle, Doris Weinbaum, Heidi Gibson, Simone Costes, Dolly Latteier, Jo Anne Moran, Mary Mohr, Suzi Klickstein and new member Kieu Doan, all decked out in bunny ears, passed out Mardi Gras masks and beads to each of the delighted RIO clients. After donning their Mardi Gras regalia, the RIO folks were ready for their Easter craft. Dolly Latteier, Simone Costes and Bette Langford organized the preparation of the two beautiful Easter crafts. The clients each made a colorful Easter card and also got to decorate a lovely realistic looking colored Easter egg ornament. Everyone, volunteers, staff and clients

had a very hip-hoppity good time. Bette Langford, Barbara McLaughlin, Simone Costes and Suzi Klickstein prepared materials for the April activity. The theme is “Spring has Sprung.” The clients embellished zigzag stand-up cards with the accouterments of spring, flowers, birds, bees and bugs. In May, our final month of Garden Therapy this year, we will be celebrating butterflies and beneficial bugs. We will be preparing materials at Suzi’s house at 10:30 am, Thursday May 5. Garden Therapy will take place at 12:45

pm on Wednesday, May 18. We hope you can join us on one or both of these dates. Any questions feel free to contact Suzi at [email protected].

from Elyse Crane Our annual GardenFest was held on Saturday April 9th. It was a great success with the plant sales at over $2500 and the flea market at over $800. Thanks to all the garden club members, husbands and sons who donated their time, vehicles, horticultural expertise, plants and muscle to make the event a huge success. We had some great vendors this year that I hope will come back next year. The community organizations that had tables were The Reserve, Master Gardeners, City of San Clemente Water Conservation, Farm Fresh to You, Goin’ Native Therapeutic Gardens, Tower Gardens and the Rose Society of Saddleback Mountain. We also had SCGC members help with blue birds and butterflies, children’s face painting, children’s activities and a popcorn machine. Saddleback Jr. College sent two docents that were very helpful in the plant sale area along with our very own Lisa Goff. They were able to assist our customers with their numerous questions. Thank you to our sponsors Armstrong Gardens, Bemus Landscape, Inc., Plant Depot and Shore Gardens. They all were very generous with their plant donations. Our winners for our Funky Container contest this year were: 1st place Rodney McChesney and tied for 2nd place was Bertie Lloyd and Dolly Latteier. The San Clemente Art Association winners this year were: 1st place Mary Scott, 2nd place Rose Walker and 3rd place Pattie Hoskims. Thank you to all of our volunteers that made this GardenFest fabulous. We appreciate you!

-- Quinn Bork, Shore Gardens NurseryHi, I’m Quinn, the new owner of Shore Gardens Nursery. I was born in Minnesota but moved to California at the age of 5. I came to San Clemente at age of 12. I am now 33 and live in a little old house here with a huge backyard, my lovely wife Starla, new baby Rain and our little black Chihuahua Lola. I am admittedly a novice gardener but love savoring everyone’s gardening tips and comparing notes with my customers about successful gardening.

I started working at Shore Gardens at the age of 18, a year after graduating from high school, and not really having a clue as to what to do with my life. Suddenly, I realized that I loved gardening and was amazed at all the career options I could pursue with that education. Subsequently, I thought it to be the best thing ever to own my own nursery

or even to work as manager at a large production nursery. I had been randomly taking general education and some elective courses at Saddleback College, but quickly refocused on a major in Ornamental Horticulture. I was then working full time at Shore Gardens while taking all the classes needed for my degree. I was making excellent grades but I could only afford to do 3 or 4 classes per semester. That was quite an economic burden, but then I heard about a scholarship offered by the San Clemente Garden Club. In 2002 or 2003, I decided to apply and was chosen! Subsequently, the Garden Club kept renewing my scholarship the whole time I was in the program, which really motivated me to continue when, at times, I thought I might have to give college a break. It took a long time for me to complete my degree but I wound up graduating in 2006 with an Associate Degree of Science, with emphasis on Ornamental Horticulture. They have a great program at Saddleback and I took every relevant class available, eventually earning an Occupational Skills Certificate in Plant Identification and Landscape Design. My wife Starla is a talented florist and a few years ago, Bob Carrick, the former owner of Shore Gardens and my mentor, offered to let us build a flower shop in the nursery. The thinking was that we would be able to practice running a business with a view to

Sponsor Prof le: buying Shore Gardens from him when he planned to retire. The Carrick family had built a great legacy out of this business and it’s likely one of the oldest in San Clemente, having been established in1955. Subsequently, Bob kept his word and I bought Shore Gardens from him in November of 2015. I am very proud to have become the new owner of Shore Gardens with its great heritage and customer base. I want to continue doing business in much the same way as it has been leading up to my ownership. It is really great to get to know all the locals and to make relationships on a name-by-name basis. I love the Garden Club and all the great folks I have met there. Garden-type people are my kind of people, and it is truly a pleasure to see all of you in the shop. Thanks for all your support over the years! Quinn Bork, Owner

Easter Lily (Lilium longiflorum)from Susan Pierce In the 1880s, Mrs. Thomas Sargent visited Bermuda and loved this flower so much that she brought back bulbs to her home in Philadelphia. A local nurseryman, William Harris, forced the Bermuda lily bulbs to bloom in the spring and sold them as Easter lilies. If you have an Easter lily plant, once the blooms have faded it can be planted in your garden. Prepare a sunny location in the garden using a well draining commercial planting mix, or a mix of one part soil, one part peat moss and one part perlite. (Good drainage is essential for lilies.) Set the entire pot and plant into the ground until the foliage has died back, then gently remove it from the pot and plant it directly into the ground. Spread the root ball by gently pulling upward and outward from the center to loosen the clumped and matted roots. Plant it a little deeper than how it was growing in the pot, with the bulb about three inches below the soil surface. Water thoroughly after planting. Cover it with soil, mulch, and cut the stems back to the ground. Feed monthly with an all-purpose 10-10-10 water-soluble fertilizer. New shoots should begin to appear in a short time, and it may bloom again in late summer. Good luck!

Looking For Gardens To Paintfrom Doris Weinbaum Do you have a garden that you would be willing to share with painters? The San Clemente Art Association is interested in painting some of our beautiful private gardens. All you need to provide is room for artists and their easels in your yard and access to a bathroom. If you are interested, please contact Doris Weinbaum.

During Fun Fridays in the Garden at Las Palmas, we’ve been trimming the celery and wrapping the remaining stalks in cardboard (for support and blanching). We’ve been harvesting the lettuce too. Celery with cream cheese and raisins and lettuce dipped in homemade dressing were big hits! All volunteers are welcome. Contact me for more details. Doris Weinbaum

Members’ Garden Tour from Cindy Burns In addition to our SCGC Annual Garden Tour on June 4, open to the public, we would like to put together our 5th annual Members’ Garden Tour for Tuesday, May 17. We’ll start at 9:30 with a potluck brunch at the home of club president Weej Baggaley, and then drive to several members’ homes to take a peek at what’s going on in their gardens. It’s a fun and relaxed way to get to know other club members. If you’d like to have your own garden on the tour, please let Cindy Burns know at [email protected] or 949-433-6608. Don’t be confused--- This is for our members’ own gardens, and just for our SCGC members to visit. It is not the public Garden Tour that Patricia Holloway is putting together.
