Everyone in the whole wide
world has heard or taken a liking
to one of Sam Cooke’s songs.
During the period from 1957 to
1964 Cooke recorded more than
300 songs and 29 of those songs
made the top 40 list. My mind
goes back to my upbringing in
Mer Rouge, Louisiana. It was
the summer of 1965 and my
brother Charlie and I had
mowed a few lawns and had
enough money to go to town on
Saturday Night. By that time
Sam’s mega hit “Another
Saturday Night” was hot on the
charts as well as several other
tunes. Because barely turning
13, I certainly didn’t have any
one and having made $1.25 that
day you couldn’t tell me I didn’t
have money. At the time I actu-
ally thought I’d have two chicks
swinging on my little skinny
arms. That was not the case, but
never the less I still enjoyed
hearing the song blasting from
the old Seabird at Wilbert’s
Café. Those days will never
come again, but it sure is great
reminiscing about them.
The Sam Cooke Story
Born in Clarksdale, Mississippi
on January 22, 1931 Sam Cook
one of eight children to the
union of Annie Mae and
Revered Charles Cook a Baptist
minister. The family moved to
Chicago, Illinois two years later
and thus Sam attended Wendell
Phillips Academy High School,
the same school the late great
Nate “King” Cole had attended a
few years earlier.
Starting out with his family
members singing in a group
called “The Singing Children
and later as the lead singer of
the Highway QCs in his teen
years. Cook, who added the (e)
to his last name, went on to
replace the tenor singer R. H.
Harris with the outstanding
gospel group The Soul Stirrers.
Cooke took the group to new
level and they were signed by
Specialty Records and recorded
the hits “Peace in the valley”,
“How far am I from Canaan”,
“Jesus Paid the debt” and “One
more River”...all quality gospel
songs.
Gaining popularity as the
months went by, Cooke moved
to cross over into pop music and
recorded a song (Loveable) in
1956 under the name of Dale
Cooke. But thanks to a very dis-
tinctive voice people realized it
was him and that didn’t sit too
well with the gospel community.
The head of Specialty Records
gave Cooke permission to start
working on some secular music,
but became displeased when he
found out it wasn’t kind of
music their other artist (Little
Richard) was doing. So Cooke
and his producer Bumps
Blackwell left the label and
Cooke begin to do his own
thing.
Things took a turn for the better
for Sam in 1957 when he
appeared on the ABC’s Guy
Mitchell Show and later in the
same year he signed with Keen
Records. His first was the
Immortal “You Send Me” with
the B side a reworked version of
George Gershwin’s
“Summertime”, which spent six
weeks at # 1 on the Billboard R
& B chart. The song also had
mainstream success spending
three week at # 1 on the
Billboard Pop charts.
Needless to say Sam Cooke, a
little guy was Clarksdale,
Mississippi had started on one of
the world’s most famous seven-
year stints in musical history.
Taking advantage of his success
Cooke began working even
harder at his craft. In 1961 he
started his own label (SAR) with
J. W. Alexander and Roy Crain.
The label soon added such
groups as The Simms Twins,
Billy Crystal, The Valentinos,
and a couple of soon to be
famous acts in Bobby Womack
and Johnnie Taylor.
That wasn’t all! Sam Cooke
would go on to create a publish-
ing imprint and management
firm and left Keen to go to RCA
Victor. At RCA his first hit was
“Chain Gang” reaching number
2 in the billboard pop charts and
he followed that with more hits
including “Sad Mood”, “Bring it
on home to me” (with Lou
Rawls on back vocals), “Another
Saturday Night” and “Twisting
the Night away”: all super hits
and songs we are still listening
to today. During this hot string
Sam Cooke would go on to have
29 top 40 hits and recorded
more than 300 songs mostly sin-
gles. In 1963 he recorded a
blues-inflected LP “Night Beat”
and his most critically studio
album “Ain’t That Good News”
featured five singles in 1964. At
points during this time Sam
Cooke would sleep only four
hours a night and spent a great
deal of time in the studio work-
ing on his perfession.
Becoming one of the first black
performer and composer to man-
age and operate the business
side of his musical career. Sam
Cooke also took an active part in
the Civil Rights Movement!
On December 11, 1964 while
sitting on top of the world at the
tender age of 33 Sam Cooke’s
life came to an abrupt end when
he was shot to death at the
Hacienda Motel in Los Angeles
California. Conflicting reports
about a woman who had spent
time with him early in the night
and the hotel manager who
claimed Cooke (who was not
known as a violent person)
attacked her. The family and
friends as well as fans of Sam
Cooke never bought the women
stories, but the L. A. Police did
and the case was ruled as justifi-
able homicide and closed.
Mourners lined up for more than
4 city blocks as the funeral serv-
ices were held for Cooke in
Chicago and he was buried in
Forest Lawn Park Cemetery in
Glendale, California.

Cooke’s memories will live for-
ever and many artist world-wide
are offering version of some of
Cooke’s work. Shortly after his
death, upstart Motown released
“We Remember Sam Cooke”, a
collection of his tunes recorded
by The Supremes. Two of
Cooke’s songs “Bring it on
Home to me” and “A Change
Gonna Come” were both fea-
tured in the movie Ali. John
Mellencamp song “Ain’t Even
done with the Night” has Sam
Cooke singing on the radio. R.
Kelly performed the “A Change
Gonna Come’ during his
September 2009 “Ladies Make
Some Noise Tour” in New York
City. The same song was used
in Spike Lee’s film Malcolm X
and James Taylor did a version
of the song in The West Wing.
The late rapper Tupac Shakur
made reference to Cooke in his
hit song “Thugz Mansion”. Nas
makes reference to him in “We
Major” with Kanye West. In The
Roots song “Stay Cool”, the
emcee suggests “I got the soul
of a young Sam Cooke”. Even
Canadian Punk Rock groups like
The Riptides pay homage to
Cooke in Change Gonna Come.
The band Night Beats claimed to
have borrowed their name from
Cooke’s album Night Beat. Even
UK great Rod Stewart once told
VH1 he use lock himself in a
room and listen to Sam Cooke’s
vocal phrases.
Cooke was inducted as a charter
member in the Rock and Roll
Hall of Fame in 1986. In 1999
Cooke was honored with the
Grammy’s Lifetime
Achievement Award and Rolling
Stone ranked him #16 on their
list of the “100 Greatest Artist of
All-Times. In 2008 Cooke was
named fourth “Greatest Singer
of All-times by Rolling Stone.
Some 46 years later fans all over
the world celebrated what would
have been Cooke’s 80th birthday
on January 22, 2011. In talking
with his brother L.C. Cooke who
lives in Chicago today we
learned the family never
believed the Hotel people stories
and never will. But they have
satisfaction in knowing in just
seven years Sam Cooke record-
ed over 300 songs and 29 of
those made the top 40 list. He
has since gone down in the
industry as one of the world’s
finest composers, song writers
and soul singers. Cooke paved
the way for the likes of the late
great Johnnie Taylor and Otis
Redding, plus Aretha Franklin
and many other soul singers.
L.C. Cooke is coming to
Houston to be the honor guest at
the Fiesta Black History
Celebration Free Music Festival.
Ernie Johnson pays tribute to
Sam Cooke to climate an after-
noon of music, fun and games
on Saturday February 19, 2011
from 12.30 PM until 6.00PM.
L.C. had his share of time in the
limelight teaming up with the
Doo Wop band Johnny Keyes
and the Magnificents for a cou-
ple of years and then doing his
thing from a solo stand point.
In closing we want to add please
come out to the show and meet
L.C. Cooke. We know you will
enjoy it. Plus there’s all the fun
and games for the whole family
along with some great singing.
And it’s all FREE!

Dear reader it is again a blessingto be able to share with yousome scriptural TRUTHS, John17:17. Remember, the purposeof these articles is to seek theTRUTH according to THEWORD, thereby exposingERROR. We believe this is bestdone by definitions and the pre-ponderance of scriptures; whichis having superior weight, force, importance, or influence ofscripture. Again we believe thisallows SCRIPTURE to INTER-PRET scripture, thereby allow-ing a better understanding onthat topic. We also believe, according to scripture, it is ofthe MOST importance to knowthe WILL of GOD, throughChrist and his apostles: “Matt17:4 Then answered Peter, andsaid unto Jesus, Lord, it is goodfor us to be here: if thou wilt, letus make here three tabernacles;one for thee, and one for Moses, and one for Elias. 5 While heyet spake, behold, a brightcloud overshadowed them: andbehold a voice out of the cloud, which said, This is my belovedSon, in whom I am well pleased;hear ye him.” “Matt 28:18And Jesus came and spake untothem, saying, All power isgiven unto me in heaven and inearth. 19 Go ye therefore, andteach all nations, baptizingthem in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the HolyGhost: 20 Teaching them toobserve all things whatsoever Ihave commanded you: and, lo, Iam with you alway, even untothe end of the world. Amen.”“John 17:18 As thou hast sentme into the world, even so haveI also sent them into the world.19 And for their sakes I sanctifymyself, that they also might besanctified through the truth. 20Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shallbelieve on me through theirword; 21 That they all may beone; as thou, Father, art in me,and I in thee, that they also maybe one in us: that the world maybelieve that thou hast sent me.22 And the glory which thougavest me I have given them;that they may be one, even aswe are one:” “Acts 2:41 Thenthey that gladly received hisword were baptized: and thesame day there were added untothem about three thousand souls.42 And they continued stedfast-ly in the apostles’ doctrine andfellowship, and in breaking ofbread, and in prayers.” “ Eph5:14 Wherefore he saith, Awakethou that sleepest, and arise fromthe dead, and Christ shall givethee light. 15 See then that yewalk (1)circumspectly, not asfools, but as wise, 16Redeeming the time, because thedays are evil. 17 Wherefore beye not unwise, but understandingwhat the will of the Lordis”..Definition:(1)circumspectly
199 akribos (ak-ree-boce’);adverb from the same as 196;exactly, accurately: KJV— cir-cumspectly, diligently, perfect (-ly). “Eph 3:1 For this cause IPaul, the prisoner of Jesus Christfor you Gentiles, 2 If ye haveheard of the dispensation of thegrace of God which is given meto you-ward: 3 How that byrevelation he made known untome the mystery; (as I wroteafore in few words, 4 Whereby, when ye read, ye may under-stand my knowledge in the mys-tery of Christ) 5 Which in otherages was not made known untothe sons of men, as it is nowrevealed unto his holy apostlesand prophets by the Spirit;” “2Pet 3:1 This second epistle, beloved, I now write unto you;in both which I stir up your pureminds by way of remembrance:2 That ye may be mindful of thewords which were spoken beforeby the holy prophets, and of thecommandment of us the apostlesof the Lord and Saviour:” “I Jn4:5 They are of the world:therefore speak they of theworld, and the world heareththem. 6 We are of God: he thatknoweth God heareth us; hethat is not of God heareth notus. Hereby know we the spirit oftruth, and the spirit of error.”“Jude 1:17 But, beloved, remember ye the words whichwere spoken before of the apos-tles of our Lord Jesus Christ;”
According to scripture justknowing and or believing is notenough, the BLESSING comeswith the will to SUFFER toOBEY, thereby CEASING fromSIN: “Rom 10:16 But theyhave not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hathbelieved our report? 17 So thenfaith cometh by hearing, andhearing by the word of God.”“Phil 1:29 For unto you it isgiven in the behalf of Christ, notonly to believe on him, but alsoto suffer for his sake; 30 Havingthe same conflict which ye sawin me, and now hear to be inme.” “Heb 3:19 So we see thatthey could not enter in becauseof unbelief.” “Heb 4:1 Let ustherefore fear, lest, a promisebeing left us of entering into hisrest, any of you should seem tocome short of it. 2 For unto uswas the gospel preached, as wellas unto them: but the wordpreached did not profit them, notbeing (1)mixed with faith inthem that heardit”…Definition:(1)mixed withfaith-4786 sugkerannumi(soong-ker-an’-noo-mee); from4862 and 2767; to commingle,i.e.(figuratively) to combine orassimilate: KJV— mix with, temper together.
James 1:21 Wherefore lay apartall filthiness and superfluity of
naughtiness, and receive withmeekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.22 But be ye doers of theword, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves. 23For if any be a hearer of theword, and not a doer, he is likeunto a man beholding his naturalface in a glass: 24 For hebeholdeth himself, and goeth hisway, and straightway forgettethwhat manner of man he was. 25But whoso looketh into the per-fect law of liberty, and contin-ueth therein, he being not a for-getful hearer, but a doer of thework, this man shall be blessedin his deed. James 2:17 Evenso faith, if it hath not works, isdead, being alone. 18 Yea, aman may say, Thou hast faith, and I have works: shew me thyfaith without thy works, and Iwill shew thee my faith by myworks. 19 Thou believest thatthere is one God; thou doestwell: the devils also believe, andtremble. 20 But wilt thou know,O vain man, that faith withoutworks is dead? 1 Pet 4:1Forasmuch then as Christ hathsuffered for us in the flesh, armyourselves likewise with thesame mind: for he that hath suf-fered in the flesh hath ceasedfrom sin; 2 That he no longershould live the rest of his time inthe flesh to the lusts of men, butto the will of God. 3 For thetime past of our life may sufficeus to have wrought the will ofthe Gentiles, when we walked inlasciviousness, lusts, excess ofwine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries: 4Wherein they think it strangethat ye run not with them to thesame excess of riot, speakingevil of you:
We MUST NOT forget when weDONOT receive his WORDSgladly, that is, chooses not tohear and or OBEY, we REJECTHIM and the same WORD willJUDGE us in that LAST DAY.Not only do we REJECT him bynot RECEIVING and OBEY-ING his WORD, we also rejectSALVATION through GRACE!Note what the apostle Paul said;Acts 20:29 For I know this, thatafter my departing shall grievouswolves enter in among you, notsparing the flock. 30 Also ofyour own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, todraw away disciples after them.31 Therefore watch, andremember, that by the space ofthree years I ceased not to warnevery one night and day withtears. 32 And now, brethren, Icommend you to God, and tothe word of his grace, which isable to build you up, and to giveyou an inheritance among all(1)them which are sancti-fied.(KJV)
Definition:(1)all them which
are sanctified-37 hagiazo (hag-ee-ad’-zo); from 40; to makeholy, i.e. 2) to separate from pro-fane things and to dedicate toGod, to dedicate people to God3) to purify c) to purify internal-ly by a renewing of the soul:KJV— hallow, be holy, sanctify.(See also renewing; Rom. 12:1-2)
