PRETORIA – One time learner at Drakensig Primary and Ben Vorster High School, Alicia Cilliers, made her first splash in the fashion designing industry on December 1 when she won the prize for best evening wear in LISOF’s 17 th annual fashion show held at the Sandton Convention Centre. Last year, Alicia completed her second year of studies in fashion design at LISOF fashion school in Pretoria. Blackberry approached LISOF’s second year fashion design students to take on the task of designing and manufacturing the prototypes for their promotional wear. Blackberry awarded prizes to the best in-store garment, the best sportswear garment and the best night-life garment as well as best overall Blackberry range. The Blackberry range was launched at the same event on December 1. Alicia also won a Blackberry 8520, which she now uses a great deal for her studies and when she does get the time to design privately. Alicia has an infectious, bubbling personality which will certainly serve her well in her prospective career. She is now busy with her third and final year of study, after which she plans to land a job at a well known fashion designer for a year or two to gain experience. ‘My dream is to start my own sewing centre where I will teach people the trade to make a living Drakie designs her way into the world for themselves. Community upliftment is very important to me and I want to make it a success so that the people of Limpopo will really benefit from my project’ says Alicia. ‘I have always like being creative so after considering jewellery design as a career, I decided on fashion design because there are just so many more ways in which I can express myself, plus my hands will be busy all the time with creating’ she added. Alicia’s favourite style to design in is Eco Fashion. She loves working with organic and sustainable textiles and will be using these to design her final year fashion range which she is already working hard at. She was shopping around for different textiles for her range while chatting to K2C. ‘Lalesso is my greatest inspiration for Eco Fashion’ says Alicia. For those considering a career in fashion design, Alicia has some to-the-point advice. ‘You need a thick skin in fashion designing and you need to work very hard. If you believe in something and you know it’s right, go for it and back it all the way. Don’t let anyone convince you otherwise! You have to work for what you want’ says Alicia with gusto. Alicia’s parents in Hoedspruit congratulate her on her outstanding achievement and wish her all the best for the future. HOEDSPRUIT – Pat Fagan’s family will have to make their peace with scratchy kisses and whiskery embraces for the whole year, but for a good cause of course. In November last year Pat decided to start growing his beard and keep at it for a whole year until November 2011, getting sponsors along the way to help him do it. All the proceeds will be donated to CANSA. Sure it is a good cause, but why would he do it? Pat just says ‘Why not? I feel that if I A bearded wonder.... Awesome Weddings and Events (Limpopo) and Hooked VoIP (Western Cape) were picked to receive a free brand makeover from Colourworks and HP Online Print Services. The package, worth about R5 000, includes logo, business card and letter heads. And according to a Credit Suisse report, 27 Great brands of tomorrow, listed companies that focus on brand building outperform the market by up to 17% a year. ‘Especially in the context of the current tough economic climate, it is vital that small and medium businesses also pay attention to their brand, sooner rather than later, in order to create a strong brand for the market, a brand that the customer understands and can buy into - with positive empathy,’ continued Lesley. Delize hardly remembers when or how she entered the competition but is really excited about the possibilities the new branding offers her business. ‘I didn’t really have branding yet, so this was such a great surprise’ says Delize.
