As one of Los Angeles’ most popular entertainment districts and tourist attractions, Sunset Boulevard is home to a variety of trendy restaurants, nightclubs, entertainment attractions, shopping spots and much more. The street itself is an icon of the celebrity culture and glamor associated with Hollywood.• Far from a glamorous beginning, Sunset

Boulevard was originally the path of a 1780s cattle trail that began at the Pueblo de Los Angeles and stretched 22 miles west to the ocean. Today, it starts in downtown Los Angeles and runs the same 22 miles, ending at the Pacific Coast Highway in the Pacific Palisades.

• A drive along the length of Sunset Boulevard takes the traveler through various neighborhood transitions that touch every extreme of the

socioeconomic scale, ranging from low-income housing to opulent mansions of the very rich.

• The boulevard is at least four lanes wide its entire length, and because of its heavy traffic along with curvy, winding turns in some sections, fender-benders are common.

• As the road continues west it passes, among other areas, through Hollywood, West Hollywood, Beverly Hills, Holmby Hills and the exclusive Brentwood area.

• The best known section of the Boulevard is Sunset Strip, a 1.5 mile-long section in West Hollywood that has been famous for its active nightlife since the 1950s. Before its glory days, this section was known as Beverly Boulevard, and was little more than several scattered buildings and a few garden nurseries.

• It picked up its nickname as LA police and county workers began referring to the stretch of road as “that strip.” But once the movie industry took off, production studios and glamorous homes of movie stars began popping up everywhere.

• The Strip is rich with sights and attractions all along the way, encompassing a surplus of

vegetables they needed to chop. The solution was to film an actual demonstration. Once they were able to show the device in action, the next logical step was to start broadcasting the demonstration as a TV commercial.

• Popeil received the Ig Nobel Prize in Consumer Engineering in 1993. The awards committee described him as the “incessant inventor and perpetual pitchman of late night television” and awarded the prize in recognition of his “redefining the industrial revolution” with his numerous innovative devices.

• A good example of the classic “see a problem, sell a solution” method of invention is the “Snap-It Screw.” It’s a way to replace those tiny, hard-to-handle little screws that hold eyeglasses together.

• “Snap-It Screw” inventor Nancy Tedeschi recalls, “The old saying that necessity is the mother of invention is what inspired me.” And she means that literally since it was her own mother who was the inspiration for her idea.

• Tedeschi’s mother was overseas doing volunteer work when a hinge screw in her glasses fell out and she couldn’t find it. Left with no other immediate remedy, she slipped the post out of one of her earrings and plugged it in where the former hinge had been.

• “She wore her glasses with the bead still dangling from the hinge for about a year,” Tedeschi said. She traveled to several foreign countries with it, and people would literally stop her on the street and ask where she got this cute, glittery little charm. She finally came to me and said, ‘You really have to make these charms for glasses!’”

• For Tedeschi, creating the “Snap-It Screw” was the easy part. The hard part was doing all the organizing and legwork necessary to

produce and market her little invention. She found herself having to obtain legal patents from countries all over the world, then she opened a factory in China and a warehouse in Seattle. She spent countless hours strategizing ways to market her idea to retail sellers.

• Today, the “Snap-It Screw” is a success, and Tedeschi says that despite all the hard work she had to go through, she wouldn’t change a thing.

• “Bling To Go” was invented by Abby Appelt during a period where she was forced to use crutches. She felt the gray metal frame was boring and could use a little color and pizzazz. So she created some decorative wrap-on decals to give her crutches some personality -- and her invention was born.

• Appelt said, “When I wore my crutch décor, I had people stop me, literally everywhere I went, complimenting me on how awesome my crutches looked!”

• As Appelt notes, people decorate a million different things with all kinds of stickers, so it made sense to make some just for crutches. “Bling To Go” also works on canes, walkers and bed posts.

• Her company’s slogan is “express your health,” and they back up their words by being active contributors to several physical and emotional health charities.

• Perhaps one of the more peculiar and innovative creations making the invention circuit is the “Bogdon Bass.” It’s a standing acoustic string bass player whose main component is -- of all things -- a cardboard box!

• The “Bogdon Bass” is literally a large cardboard box reinforced with duct tape, with a wooden neck and vinyl strings. It can be played with or without an amplifier. Because of the use of these materials, the instrument is lightweight, inexpensive -- and recyclable.

• Its inventor, Chris Badynee, named it after his father, Bogdon. “The inspiration to make my Bogdon Box Bass was that I badly wanted to own something that I couldn’t afford to buy, so I made one myself,” Badynee said. “All I wanted was a natural-sounding upright bass for my own home recordings of songs I wrote.”

• After assembling what he thought was just a goofy idea that only he would use, Badynee was amazed by how good the makeshift instrument sounded. “The tone was so fantastic that I had to tell someone about it. So I taped a 60-second video and posted it on the web. I got 1,000 hits on YouTube in less than a day!”

• The video became a bit of a viral sensation, and Badynee was asked by “Good Morning, America” for the right to show the video on

their program.• Almost immediately after the GMA broadcast,

Badynee began receiving requests to buy a “Bogdon Box.” He brought in his uncle and a couple of acoustic technicians to help him perfect it. Once they got the instrument exactly right, they began selling it on eBay and received a huge response. Hundreds of orders

Contrary to what you might expect, electronic mail, or “e-mail,” really isn’t a new in-

vention. Actually, e-mail has been around for 40 years. The first

e-mail was sent in 1972 by Ray Tomlinson. He also came up with the idea of using the “@” symbol

to separate the computer and user names. QueenElizabeth of Great Britain

sent her first email in 1976!

• One of the most famous nightclubs in the ‘40s and ‘50s was the glamorous Earl Carroll Theatre on Sunset, said to host the most beautiful girls in the world. After it was sold, it functioned as Moulin Rouge for a number of years.

• A n o t h e r f a m o u s fixture on the boulevard is The Comedy Store in West Hollywood, where many f a m o u s comedians got their start. Among them are Johnny Carson, David Letterman, Jay Leno, Rosanne Barr and Jerry Seinfield, to mention but a few.

• The iconic thoroughfare inspired the popular 1950s feature film “Sunset Boulevard,” starring William Holden and Gloria Swanson. It was later followed by a 1993 musical named “Sunset Boulevard” that starred Glen Close.

• Sunset Boulevard has been highlighted on TV shows, album covers and in song titles, including the 1960s TV series “77 Sunset Strip,” and “Below Sunset” that was a popular show during the 1990s

• Sunset Boulevard can also brag that it has hosted most of the early motion picture companies. The area near the intersection of Gower Street was famous for the many Westerns made there. However, this section was also known as “Poverty Row,” as many of the films made there ultimately failed.

• Although many film companies popped up,

● It’s still not known who made the fol-lowing sage observation: “To succeed in politics, it is sometimes necessary to rise above your principles.”

● It was beloved American poet Robert Frost who made the following sage obser-vation: “A bank is a place where they lend you an umbrella in fair weather and ask for it back when it begins to rain.”

● In 1938, Time magazine featured Adolph Hitler on the cover as its Man of the Year.

● You might be surprised at some of the amazing feats that can be accomplished with the aid of modern medicine. In 2008, two women in India gave birth at the age of 70. With the aid of egg donation and postmenopausal in vitro fertilization, Rajo Devi Lohan gave birth to her only child, a girl. Charan Singh Panwar and his wife, Omkari Panwar, already had two daugh-ters and five grandchildren, but they want-ed a son. Using the same procedure, Om-kari had twins, a boy and a girl.

● The first time a toilet was ever seen on television was in the pilot episode of “Leave It to Beaver,” in 1957.

● The most common name in the world is Muhammed.

● If you live in the South, home of huge roaches, you probably won’t be surprised to learn that a cockroach can live for a week without a head. When the headless insect does finally die, it’s from starvation, not from the loss of its head.

● Those who study such things say that there are 45,000 chickens for every person on the planet. *** Thought for the Day: “The reason that adulation is not displeasing is that, though untrue, it shows one to be of con-sequence enough, in one way or other, to induce people to lie.” -- Lord Byron

the smaller ones tended to end quickly — some of the failures included California Film Co., Century Film Co., H. Paulis Studio and Francis Ford Studio. But some now-famous film companies were able to survive and thrive, including Warner Brothers Studios, Christie Film Co. and Columbia Studios.

• Today, tourists from all over the world visit Sunset Boulevard to get a glimpse of what makes Tinsel Town glitter and glow. ■

channel. They named the channel the Home Shopping Club, later changing it to the Home Shopping Network (HSN).

• Using their former radio personality Bob Circosta as the network’s first home shopping host, Circosta would eventually sell 75,000 different products in over 20,000 hours of live television.

• Today, The Home Shopping Network is a $3 billion retailer that stretches across multiple channels and includes online, mobile, catalog and brick and mortar stores. It offers products 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 364 days a year.

• HSN now reaches 96 million homes, and its online site is one of the top 10 e-commerce sites on the web. Its catalog division, Cornerstone, distributes 275 million catalogs a year, costing an exorbitant amount in postage alone, but miniscule compared to the profits they generate.

• In 2010, legendary rocker Rod Stewart was the first popular performer to spotlight a new album on a shopping channel. He debuted his CD “Fly Me To The Moon” with a live, one-hour concert on HSN. It was the highest viewed program in the history of the network and broke all of its music sales records.

• The other prominent shopping channel, QVC, (standing for Quality, Value, Convenience) was founded in 1986 by Joseph Segel, founder of the Franklin Mint. Seasoned viewers of late-night TV commercials will recognize the Franklin Mint as the seller of commemorative plates, painted figurines, limited edition coins and many other collectible items.

• QVC’s first live broadcast was shot in a studio in West Chester, Pennsylvania. The company broke American business records for sales by a new public company. Part of its early success came through an exclusive agreement with Sears to sell their products on the air.

• Showing the influence of home shopping as

Shopping from your Sofa

There’s a good chance you have an item or two in your household that you purchased without ever leaving your house -- and you even had it delivered right to your door. Home shopping is big business, to the tune of billions in revenue per year. Read on to learn more about this innovative and lucrative consumer phenomenon that keeps millions of viewers locked and loaded with their credit cards ready!• The concept for a broadcast venue dedicated

solely to home shopping originated in a roundabout way in 1977. A local radio station in Clearwater, Florida was unable to collect advertising payment due to a cash flow problem by one of its advertisers. As a last resort, the station owner, Tom Paxson, reluctantly agreed to accept the only items of value the advertiser had to offer -- a case of 112 avocado-colored electric can openers.

• Faced with the challenge of turning the goods into cash, he instructed radio personality Bob Circosta to go on the air and hype all the benefits he could dream up of owning one of these $9.95 can openers. Encouraged by the number of calls that started coming in, he kept hyping away until he had sold out the entire case in less than an hour!

• It didn’t take a lot of figuring to convince Paxson that he was on to something. Using the can opener selling technique, he starting featuring a regular radio shopping show he called “the Suncoast International Bargaineers Club.” The show soon developed a faithful audience following -- and an industry was born.

• Realizing that live, on-air product selling is best suited for TV, Paxson and financier Roy Speer co-founded a local cable TV channel in 1981 and named it “the Home Shopping Channel.” Broadcast out of Tampa Bay and selling products directly to Florida viewers, it also drew a fast following.

• Seeing a golden opportunity to take the show to the national level, they purchased a new network in 1985 and launched the first ever 24-hours a day nationwide home shopping

more than just niche programming, QVC reported record sales of T-shirts heralding “Dallas Cowboys 1994 Super Bowl Champs.” The network sold over 6,000 shirts in just the first few seconds after the game ended!

• In 1995, QVC’s success in home shopping was expressed by a few remarkable landmarks. In March of that year, they recorded over 250,000 phone calls in a single day.

• It also shipped its 200 millionth package during March of that year, the equivalent of one package for every person in America at the time. In August that same year, QVC held a “Klondike Gold Rush Day,” where sales revenues topped $19 million in 24 hours.

• Today, QVC receives more than 181 million calls in the United States per year, and it ships about 166 million packages worldwide. Its reach is to more than 166 million homes, and its annual sales recently topped $7 billion. ■

to be reckoned with, with such original scripted hits as “R & I,” “Falling Skies,” “Perception,” “Dallas” and more shows that are smashing viewing records all over the place. ***

Q: Can you tell me what one of my favorite actors, Gabriel Byrne, has been up to since “In Treatment”? What can I see him in? -- Roger T., via e-mail

A: The talented Irishman stars in the new History channel scripted series called “Vikings,” which is based upon a real-life Viking king named Ragnar Lothbrok -- played by Travis Fimmel -- who literally exploded out of Scandanavia and onto the world stage in the 8th century. A young Norwegian farmer with a wife and family, Lothbrok is deeply frustrated by the unad-venturous policies of his local chieftan, Earl Harald-son (played by Gabriel), who continues to send his Viking raiders east every summer, to the Baltic states and Russia, whose populations are as materi-ally poor as themselves. Haraldson and Lothbrok become adversar-ies as Lothbrok’s ambitions threaten Haraldson’s rule. The series -- now filming in Ireland -- also stars Jessalyn Gilsig, Gustaf Skarsgard, Clive Standen and Katheryn Winnick. It is set for a 2013 release. *** Readers: A few months back, I held a con-test for one reader to win the great summer read “Eat, Drink, and Be Married” by Rebecca Bloom. After sifting through the entries, I have randomly chosen a winner: Dorine T. of Terryville, Conn. Be on the lookout for your book, and I hope you enjoy it! All others who’d like to get in one last summer plea-sure, head to amazon.com and order a copy for yourself -- and maybe one for a friend. And go to www.celebrityextraonline.com to read my full inter-view with the talented author, and to see what she has coming up next.

Q: I’ve really been looking forward to Leonardo DiCaprio’s “The Great Gatsby” com-ing out for Christmas, but now I hear it’s been postponed. Why the delay, and when will it come out? -- Cassandra W., via e-mail

A: The Baz Luhrmann 3-D adaptation of the classic novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald -- which also stars Tobey Maguire, Carey Mulligan and Joel Edg-erton -- is now slated for a summer 2013 release. Warner Bros. president of distribu-tion, Dan Fellman, reasoned: “We think moviegoers of all ages are going to em-brace it, and it makes sense to ensure this unique film reaches the largest audience possible” [by giving it a summer release]. ***

Q: I just watched the season finale of “Rizzoli & Isles,” and already I can’t wait for the next season. Please tell me it has been re-newed for a fourth season! -- Dottie R., Roanoke, Va.

A: I am happy to report that there will in-deed be a fourth season of TNT’s hit drama, which stars Angie Harmon and Sasha Alexander. The sum-mer’s No. 1 returning scripted drama will be back in summer 2013 for another 15 episodes of mystery-solving fun. TNT has proved to be a summer force

Lost Toys Inspire Ingenuity My older son was a huge fan of Legos. And Hot Wheels -- my boys loved their Hot Wheels. They’re grown and gone, but I still remember conducting search parties -- with flashlight in hand -- for lost treasures under the couch. I don’t know if pool noodles even existed 30 years ago, but now that I have a grandson with treasures of his own, I’m going to install some under my couch.

FURNITURE ROAD BLOCK. I have two small boys who love toy cars, Legos and marbles. These things inevitably end up under the couch, so I placed a pool noodle under the couch. It sits under the skirt, so it isn’t visible, but it buffers the perimeter so that toys don’t get lost underneath the furniture anymore. -- Paige, Colorado

LINT SCREEN CLEANUP. My dryer was taking far too long to dry clothes. I clean my lint fil-ter religiously following each load, but I learned that dryer sheets cause invisible buildup that hinders a dryer’s ability to heat properly. I started washing the lint screen with mild soap and water, and I’ve noticed a remarkable difference. -- Vicki, email

TOILET SEAT REMODEL. My husband and I feel as though we’ve completely remodeled all of our bathrooms just by replacing the toilet seats. Wow! It’s amazing how one small change can make a huge difference in the decor of a room. -- Lisa, New Hampshire

SUGAR ‘N’ SPICE RELIEF. If you end up cooking something that is too spicy, just add a teaspoon of sugar, and you will cut down on the

spiciness of the dish. -- Nancy, email

GLEAMING STAINLESS. Clean and shine stainless steel by mixing 1 tablespoon cream of tartar with a few drops of water to make a paste. Rub the paste onto the appliance. Scrub with a sponge, and wipe clean with a damp paper towel. If you have a lot of stainless steel in your home, don’t depend on those tiny bottles of cream of tartar in the spice aisle. You can buy it cheap in bulk online. -- Gwen, California

SUPER GLUE TO THE RESCUE. I use super glue to quickly seal cuts and blisters. If you can’t find a Band-aid, a dab of super glue will do in a pinch. After you’ve cleaned the wound and stopped any bleeding, apply a very small amount of super glue to the area and quickly spread it around before it dries. The glue will harden into a mesh that essentially acts as replacement skin until your body is able to heal itself. Super glue is non-toxic, but it might cause some minor skin irritation. It takes a long time to come off, so I use this trick only for small wounds and if no proper bandages are available. -- Mary, Washington

FLOUR SHAKER. I save spice contain-ers that have shaker caps. I wash them out and fill them with flour or sugar. These containers are convenient when you just need a sprinkle or shake, such as when kneading dough. -- E.H., email

The VRAP Scam If you’re signed up for Veterans Retraining As-sistance Program (VRAP) and are expecting to hear about approval and payments, beware ... especially if you get a call from a 202 area code. There’s word of a scam going around to steal money from VRAP recipients. As posted on the Depart-ment of Veterans Affairs page, it works like this: The scammers will call you and congratulate you on being approved for the program. You’ll be told you can have your money within minutes ... if you give your bank deposit information and agree to a $205 ser-vice fee. Whomever it is, that person isn’t affiliated with the VA. The scammer takes your money. Nobody at the VA will ever call you like that and ask for your banking information. If you get a similar scam call, phone the Federal Trade Commission at 1-877-382-4357. (As a side note, I hunted down some infor-mation on the scam and found a phone number. If the powers-that-be want to look for the scammer, it shouldn’t be too hard: The phone is a landline in Wash-ington, D.C.) VRAP is a training program for high demand occupations. If you haven’t signed up for VRAP and want to start school in September, there’s still time. The early group (until September) is limited to 45,000 veter-ans. They’ve reached that number of applications, but only half have been accepted. If you want to apply now, it’s worth a shot. Otherwise you’ll be in the next group, which starts in October and runs until March 2014. The qualifications are: ● Ages 35 to 60 ● Unemployed ● Honorably discharged ● Not eligible for other VA education benefits ● Not receiving unemployment benefits ● Not in a federal or state job training program For more information go online to benefits.va.gov/vow/education.htm or call the VA at 1-800-827-1000. Horse Hockey Ever see a Rottweiler in a stroller? A Dober-man in a tutu? A mastiff in a crib? Little dogs bring out the goo-goo gaga in people -- namely, people who shave their legs. In re-turn, these bald-legged types treat their pint-sized canines as if they gave birth to them: teensy outfits, miniscule booties, trips in the stroller swaddled in pastel blankets, tiny paws never gracing the ground. It’s all so precious. Personally, I like horse people. There is something about a horse that makes the people who care for them sit up and take notice that a horse is a horse. Of course, of course. Horse people prepare for the arrival of a new horse. They build something called a barn and fill it with stuff called hay. They divide the barn into stalls and ensure that the number of stalls is equal to or greater than the number of horses. They stock the barn with all kinds of horsey goodies: brushes, blankets, water buckets, feeders, saddles, stirrups, bridles, bits, reins. And then, after night falls, mom and dad bring the horse inside, dress him in a onesie and tuck him into bed with them. Oh, wait, that’s the dog people again. Obviously, I love dogs. All kinds of dogs. And I love people who love dogs. All kinds of peo-ple. But when people lose sight of the fact that a dog is a dog and not a small person with superfluous ap-pendages and hypertrichosis, that’s when trouble comes knocking. Toy breeds are allowed to bark, yap, nip, jump, crawl on the baby, tear through the house and relieve themselves on the floor because they’re cute and small and, in the case of the latter, “it’s just a little.” But a little goes a long way when it comes to the smell of urine in the house. And cute can only hold its own for so long before all the unwanted be-haviors take their toll. Pay your local shelter a visit, and you’ll find its residents are predominantly Chihuahuas and pit bulls, with a smattering of other breeds. Ironically, those pit bulls and Chihuahuas are largely in the clink for the same reason: Precious and cute in the beginning, but no one learned how to handle them. The pit bull grew big, the Chihuahua got yappy, the house started to stink.

This isn’t fair to the dogs. “No” alone doesn’t teach anything. I’ve talk-ed to people who have said “no” in various tones and at myriad decibels for upward of a decade, to no avail. Love alone doesn’t conquer all. Loving peo-ple have seen their beloved dogs deemed vicious and ordered euthanized by law enforcement. A woman called me recently because she has three little dogs she says are impossible to housebreak. The truth is, she never tried. She lined her floors with paper, essentially teaching them to go inside. I said, “How would your dogs know you want them to go outside when you’ve encouraged them to go inside?” She said, “I’m their mother. They should know I know best.” Horse hockey. We are the humans, we are the homeown-ers, we are the ones who care where they go, how loud they are, what they chew on. It is our responsi-bility to prepare, to have a plan, to equip, to train. It’s up to us to build a barn and fill it with all the right stuff. That’s just good horse sense. Woof!

Dr. David Lipschitz

Too Many Cardiac Tests, Treatments Occur In U.S. Hundreds of thousands of healthy Ameri-cans have an annual electrocardiogram, EKG, and stress test to screen for coronary artery disease. The stress test can be done in one of two ways. The heart can be stressed either by exercising on a treadmill while monitored by an EKG or by injecting a radioisotope and scanning the heart before and after exercise. If exercise is difficult, the heart can be stressed by injecting the medication persantine. In either case, abnormalities can identify coronary artery disease. The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force recently reaffirmed the opinion of many experts by recommending against routine EKGs and stress tests for healthy individuals at a low risk of having heart disease and who have no symptoms, such as chest pain or shortness of breath. The task force found the tests often yield false results, leading to needless additional investigations that may cause more harm than good. Furthermore, a normal test is not a good predictor of future cardiac risk problems. Even for those at a higher risk of heart disease, the task force does not believe there is enough evidence either for or against EKG and stress testing, and it suggests that a decision be made on a case-by-case basis between doctor and patient. So how do you determine your risk for hav-ing a heart attack? This can easily be accomplished by entering information into a risk assessment tool developed by the American Heart Association at heart.org. Their heart-attack risk calculator factors in the common conditions that contribute to a higher chance of having a heart attack: age, being a male or a post-menopausal female, strong family his-tory of heart attacks, high blood pressure, elevated LDL (bad) cholesterol, a fasting blood sugar count greater than 100, smoking, being overweight, being sedentary and eating poorly. Once completed, the tool provides information about the risk of having a heart attack within 10 years (mine is 12 percent) and what steps should be taken to address any prob-lems. As heart disease is clearly the leading cause of death, it is fair to assume that everyone is in some danger. So taking steps to improve your heart health is far more important and valuable than find-ing out during a stress test that significant coronary

artery disease is already present. This means being compulsive about living a heart healthy lifestyle, including exercising, eating right, not smoking and managing stress, as well as working closely with a physician to identify and cor-rect treatable risk factors. If heart attack risk is moderate or high, a dialogue with a primary-care physician or cardiolo-gist to determine if a stress test should be done is appropriate. And for someone whose assessment indicates a very high risk of a heart attack within the next 10 years, a screening stress test is a realistic consideration. But there must be an understanding that the result may lead to angiograms, angioplasty or even open-heart surgery. No matter your risk, should symptoms de-velop -- such as shortness of breath or chest pain -- a stress test is then used as a diagnostic rather than a screening tool. Some experts may even forgo a stress test and opt for an immediate angiogram if symptoms are sufficiently compelling. For anyone who is known to have coronary artery disease but is being optimally managed with medications and has either no or stable symptoms, annual stress tests may do more harm than good. In this circumstance, any invasive procedure to open a blocked artery (by angioplasty using stents or surgery) will neither prolong life nor reduce the risk of a heart attack. Invasive procedures will relieve symptoms, but sadly, angiograms and even open-heart surgery are done frequently on individuals with no symptoms at all. Nothing is scarier than dealing with a heart problem. The evidence is compelling that aggressive diagnostic and invasive procedures are highly effec-tive when done for the appropriate indication. But numerous studies have shown that aggressive care is frequently unnecessary. In relation to heart health, the more you know and the more involved you are, the better. America’s Evolving Attitudes Towards Government Health Care In last week’s column, I discussed how a recent hospital stay and a brush with mortality re-inforced my belief that way too many people worry way too much about the little things in life -- like picking up every last crumb they can out of their slice of the Social Security pie. I mean, I totally un-derstand why folks want to get the highest return possible on their Social Security “investment.” Ob-viously, they want to make the best decision they can about when to start their Social Security. (And to help folks make that decision, a free digital copy of my fact sheet, “When to take your Social Security benefits,” is available to anyone who sends me an email at [email protected].) But what I find so puzzling is the countless emails I get from anxiety-plagued readers who treat the decision of when to start their Social Security benefits like a major life or death conundrum. It’s simply not. Most people just need to decide if they want smaller benefits for a longer period of time -- by starting their Social Security checks between ages 62 and 66 or if they want larger benefits for possibly a shorter period of time -- by waiting until as late as 70 before turning on the Social Security spigot. There is really no magic formula. Because no one knows how long he or she will live, no one really knows if they are making the correct decision about starting their government benefits. So why worry about it? As I point out often in this column, my wife and I took our benefits at age 62. If we live into our late 80s or early 90s, it will turn out to have been a dumb choice. But I simply don’t care. We’re having too much fun enjoying life to worry about it. Anyway, that was last week’s message. This week, I have another story to tell that grew out of my recent hospital stay. Back in about 1975, a couple years after I was hired by the Social Security Administration to work in one of their local field offices back in the farm country of central Illinois, I was assigned to clean out an office storeroom. As part of that effort, I came across a stash of yellowing public informa-tion materials: things like old pamphlets and bro-chures dating back to the early days of the program. There were also some dusty 16mm movie reels that contained public information films in-tended to be used as educational materials to sup-plement speeches or other presentations that SSA public affairs employees would make to various community groups and organizations. Luckily, I also found an old movie projector in this storeroom. I was pleased with that because I really wanted to watch some of the old PR films, mostly because of a fascination I had developed ear-ly in my career with the history of Social Security. But I must admit I also figured I might get a bit of a chuckle out of the old-fashioned film techniques and maybe the hackneyed messages the movies would contain. I wasn’t disappointed in either case when I watched a film called “Welcome to Medicare -- 1966.” It was a movie produced by SSA to intro-duce the American people to the then brand-new Medicare program. It told the story of an aging farm couple from Iowa. The husband, probably in his late 60s, had a heart attack and was rushed to the hospital. After learning that her husband would

be OK, but would require extensive hospitalization that quickly used up what little health insurance they had, there was a scene in which his wife was talking to the doctors. She said something like this: “I want you to make sure Elmer gets the best care possible. And don’t worry, I’m going to go home and sell the farm so that we will be able to pay all of these hospi-tal expenses.” And then we got to the Medicare pitch. One of the doctors tells her: “Oh you won’t have to con-cern yourself with that, Mildred, for you see, the gov-ernment has a brand new program called Medicare, and it’s going to pay most of Elmer’s bills. Why, you’ll just have to pay a small deductible out of your own pocket, and that’s all. So you’ll be able to keep the farm, and once we get Elmer up and around again, he can go back to raising those fine hogs of his.” Mil-dred had the last line in the movie: “Thank God for the government and this wonderful new Medicare program!” Fade to black. And it just so happened that the very evening following my storeroom cleaning stint and viewing the old Medicare movie, I was watching TV at home with my wife. A commercial came on promoting a Medicare supplement plan. It featured several obvi-ously well-to-do men playing golf. As a guy was get-ting ready to putt, one of his colleagues asked about his recent gall bladder surgery. “Oh, I’m doing just great,” he said, “but I tell you, I’m kind of ticked off because that darn government Medicare program stiffed me with part of the bill. Why, I had to pay $100 out of my own pocket!” And that led to a pitch from one of the other golfers for the Medicare supplement plan that would have picked up those extra expenses not paid by Medicare. I know both the old movie and the TV com-mercial I watched were fiction. But I think their mes-sages did reflect the tenor of the times. And here is what struck me. I was amazed by how people’s ex-pectations of their government had changed so dra-matically in just 10 years. In 1965, we had a woman who was willing to sell the farm in order to pay her husband’s hospital bill. And 10 years later, we had a rich guy on a golf course griping because the govern-ment was forcing him to cough up a measly hundred bucks out of his own pocket to pay for his hospital stay! And contrast that corny pro-government Medicare movie message with today’s ever-so-cyn-ical anti-government, anti-”Obamacare” mood that envelops this country. It seems to me that many folks

want all the inexpensive government health care they can get, as long as they don’t have to help out the other guy. We sure are a wacky -- some might say hypo-critical -- people when it comes to government-spon-sored health care in this country!

Time for Medicare Open Enrollment The Medicare open-enrollment period is coming up soon. During that time you’ll have the chance to review plans and coverage that you’ll want in 2013. You’ll be able to add, drop or change drug coverage. You can switch from an original plan to Medicare Advantage, or vice versa. You can go from one Advantage plan to an-other, such as one that has drug coverage versus one that doesn’t. The good news is that the drug plan rates aren’t going up. The average premium for basic drug coverage is likely to be $30 for the third year in a row. Thanks to the Affordable Care Act, the “doughnut hole” is shrinking. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services says 52 million people on Medicare have saved $3.9 billion on drug costs, which averages more than $600 per person per year. Between now and 2020, coverage will in-crease until the doughnut hole is closed altogether. This year we’ve had a 50 percent discount on name-brand drugs during the time the doughnut hole has been in effect, plus a discount of 14 per-cent on generic drugs. Next year, in 2013, that will increase to 52.5 percent and 21 percent respec-tively. Figuring out just when you initially need to sign up for Social Security and Medicare can be tricky because the year, month and date you were born determine your eligibility. Go online to www.medicare.gov and look for the eligibility tools and the plan finder. Or call Medicare at 1-800-633-4227. The number for So-cial Security is 1-800-772-1213. Put this on your calendar: The Medicare enrollment period this year starts Oct. 15 and ends Dec. 7, 2012. The new choices take effect Jan. 1, 2013.

Swollen Ankles Have Many Causes DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I am a diabetic male, age 96, with many aches and pains but no high blood pressure. I have low cholesterol and am in control of my diabetes. In the past few weeks, I’ve noticed swelling of my ankles and feet. I have been taking two water pills a day for it. I never use salt or eat salty foods. What can you suggest for me? -- S.S.

ANSWER: That swelling is edema, and it has many causes. One is sitting for long periods with the legs dangling down. With the legs in that posi-tion, gravity pulls fluid from the legs’ blood vessels. Treatment for this kind of edema consists in elevat-ing the legs. Every hour, lie down for 10 minutes with pillows under your legs and feet so that they are above heart level. When sitting, squeeze the leg muscles over and over. Muscle contractions stop the oozing of fluids from the blood vessels. And take a morning and afternoon walk. Elastic hose can keep fluid in blood vessels and out of the surrounding tis-sues. Dilated leg veins -- varicose veins -- promote edema. A clot in a leg vein is another cause. That’s usually quite painful, and you’d be aware that some-thing is going on if you had a clot. Liver ailments can lead to edema. The liver makes a blood protein, albumin, that keeps fluid in circulation. With a low production of this protein, fluid leaks out of vessels. Kidney failure is another reason why edema occurs. Medicines can lead to it. The popular non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines such as Advil and Aleve are two examples. So are medicines called calcium channel blockers, such as nifedipine and verapamil. If you increased the dose of your water pill on your own, you shouldn’t. You can develop a potassium deficiency from overuse of water pills. Try the things I mentioned. See if they bring down the swelling. If they don’t, you’ll have to con-sult your doctor. A much more important cause of ankle-foot edema is heart failure, something that your doctor must check you for. The booklet on edema and lymphedema ex-plains this kind of swelling in detail. Readers can ob-tain a copy by writing: Dr. Donohue -- No. 106W, Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Canada with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please al-low four weeks for delivery. *** DEAR DR. DONOHUE: I’d been on Am-bien for three years. I’m off it now. I take mela-tonin. It works better. What are the good things and bad things about it? -- R.M. ANSWER: The pineal gland in the brain makes melatonin, a hormone-like substance that contributes in regulating our internal clock. Melato-nin is secreted at night and signals the body to go to sleep. The benefits ascribed to melatonin are amaz-

ing: quelling inflammation, acting as an antioxidant, bolstering the immune system, preventing cancer. The evidence for these benefits is not over-whelming. It does, however, prevent jet lag and fos-ter sleep. Long-term side effects and safety are not known Chronic insomnia is best treated by consult-ing a sleep specialist. *** Dr. Donohue regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but he will incorporate them in his column whenever possible. Readers may write him or request an or-der form of available health newsletters at P.O. Box 536475, Orlando, FL 32853-6475.

Turn Off That Tube! Q: Since our retirement, my husband has become addicted to television. He gets up, sits at the breakfast table and turns on the TV. Two or three times a day I ask him to turn it off and do something else. He just ignores me. I leave the house as often as I can because I just cannot stand it. He doesn’t exercise and is los-ing his muscles. I do love him and want him to be with me for as long as he can. How can I get him to change this awful habit?

A: Studies by experts confirm your expe-rience. It has been shown that the average senior watches TV up to eight or nine hours every day. Why? TV can be considered a form of com-panionship, a way to escape guilt, a relief from lone-liness, an opportunity to forget problems, gratifica-tion, excitement and a variety of other needs. Some men watch sports as a way to relive the athletic expe-riences of their youth. TV is easily available and requires no effort except to point and click the remote. Cozying up to the “idiot box” is also a way to avoid personal interac-tion, and also a way to isolate oneself socially. On the plus side it tends to keep you updated and current on the news. The lack of exercise will eventually become a major health issue. Various excuses are given for not exercising, including overall poor health, pain, the fear of falling, no desire to change, excessive use of alcohol, medications, stubbornness and other nega-tive reasons. Discuss possible options with your hus-band’s doctor, your clergy and his male friends, who may be experiencing a similar problem. Group ther-apy is also healthy. Recently, while jogging around the block, I passed by a neighbor walking with a cane. He com-mented: “I wish I could still do that.” That certainly brought reality home.

Q: Now that our parents have settled into retirement, they appear to be entirely con-tent. They have worked hard, earned their lei-sure days and are now having fun after raising a wonderful family. They are grateful for good health and happiness. However, on occasion when we visit, they express some guilt about spending their assets because they see that oth-

er family members could use a little financial help. We try to minimize those thoughts. We in no way begrudge their happiness and totally agree it is their turn to enjoy life. In fact, we insist they do so. How can we help them get over their self-guilt?

A: Tell them how much pleasure you are receiving by simply seeing them happy. Thank them for sharing and guiding you to the level you now share with your own families. Remind them of all that they did for you and of all the love and time that has already been expressed through the genera-tions. Not every family has had that opportunity or will experience that. Tell them to spend their money. It’s theirs and they earned it. Encourage them to enjoy their independence and let them know how lucky you are to have them for parents. Share with them how much you are enjoying how happy and enthusiastic they are and that that makes you equally as happy. And make sure you tell them often that you love them!

● On Sept. 9, 1776, the Continental Con-gress formally declares the name of the new nation to be the “United States” of America. It replaced the term “United Colonies,” which had been in general use.

● On Sept. 3, 1783, the American Revolu-tion officially comes to an end when repre-sentatives of the United States, Great Britain, Spain and France sign the Treaty of Paris. The signing signified America’s status as a free nation, as Britain formally recognized the independence of its 13 former American colonies.

● On Sept. 7, 1936, Charles Harden Hol-ley is born in Lubbock, Texas. Writing and performing under the name Buddy Holly, he would have an influence on rock ‘n’ roll that would far outlast his tragically shortened ca-reer. He left behind a legacy that includes “That’ll Be The Day,” “Peggy Sue,” “Not Fade Away,” It’s So Easy,” “Everyday,” “Oh Boy!” and “Maybe Baby.”

● On Sept. 6, 1943, a new high-speed train traveling between New York City and Wash-ington, D.C., derails, killing 79 people and se-riously injuring 100 more. The Congressional Limited traveled at an unprecedented speed of 65 mph.

● On Sept. 4, 1957, Ford Motor Company unveils the Edsel, the first new automobile brand produced by one of the Big Three car companies since 1938. One reporter called it “an Oldsmobile sucking a lemon.” In addi-tion, at highway speeds the famous hood or-nament had a tendency to fly off and into the windshield.

● On Sept. 5, 1972, during the 1972 Sum-mer Olympics at Munich, Germany, a group of Palestinian terrorists storms the Olympic Village apartment of the Israeli athletes, kill-ing two and taking nine others hostage. The terrorists were part of a group known as Black September.

● On Sept. 8, 1986, “The Oprah Winfrey Show” is broadcast nationally for the first time. It went on to become the highest-rated talk show in TV history. By 2008, “The Oprah Winfrey Show” had an estimated weekly audience of some 46 million viewers in the United States and was broadcast around the world in 134 countries.

Many people think hearing aids will make them look older and less attractive. But this is an outdated view of what modern hearing aids look like today. Some are nearly invisible and fit inconspicuously in the ear canal. Some can even be flaunted! Manufacturers now have hearing aids that are veritable fashion statements in different colors

and sleek designs. There is just no excuse to permit an obsolete stigma to stop you from treating your hearing problem.

The human voice is one of the most complex sounds. Our lives center around our ability to communicate with others. The ability to hear and understand what someone is saying is at the heart of that communication.

The Smasher and the Simply Smashing

Before he hit the 40-feet hook shot out of the straw to take him to within two putts of the Green Jacket, a little bit of banter in the room turned to what Bubba Watson was wearing.

As most of us know by now, Bub-ba Watson won the Masters, largely due to his monstrous 300-plus yard drives and unorthodox swinging style. But I, too, became curious about Watson’s game and, yes, his style, too.

For the techies out there, Watson uses a PING G20 driver with a cus-tom pink True Temper Grafalloy Bi-Matrix shaft. The same exact driver will be made available to pro shops this year, the company announced after the tournament.

Pink is a color that most sports fans are becoming accustomed to. It appears in splashes on various uni-forms these days to signify the fight against breast cancer, a cause that has successfully managed to co-opt that color and increase awareness. Knowing this, we were all a little leery of making fun of the color.

And we were right: Ping donates $300 to Watson’s charity for every 300-foot drive he makes. His Phoe-nix-based charity aims to donate $1 million to various organizations

during the year, and after this win, it’s a safe bet to say it will do so.

But his manner of dress and that unorthodox swinging style also reminded me of former PGA tour-nament winner from the ‘60s, Doug Sanders.

Known as the “Peacock of the Fairways,” Sanders came out of nowhere to win the Canadian Open as an amateur. His best finish at the Masters was a fourth place tie, and he won 20 events on the Tour, but Sanders was best known for his manner of dress. Sanders was famous for his “Mad Men”-esque devotion to what he wore. He was known to wear golf shoes that looked more like dress shoes, pleated golf plants, button-down cardigans and a golf polo. Each out-fit had complimentary colors of the same shade, and he even made sure his golf bags matched his outfit.

While both Sanders and Watson are philanthropists and champions, they have something else in com-mon — they’re both self-taught golfers. Neither has taken a lesson in his life. Sanders grew up a poor cotton farmer’s son; Watson’s father was a Green Beret Vietnam veteran who gave him a 9-iron once and told him to “beat it down the fairway.”

Well, Watson surely will be beat-ing it down the fairway for a while now, and nobody will make fun of his clothes anymore, but I have one suggestion — and I’m sure Mr. Sanders would agree — you should at least shave before putting on the Green Jacket. Sure he won in a play-off, but this isn’t hockey, you know.

Tea Set Serves as Family Legacy Q: Enclosed is a color picture of a tea set I purchased in 1953, while stationed with the U.S. Army in Germany. It was a gift for my mother and is now in my possession, since she has passed away. Hutschenreuther in Selb, Germany made the set. It is also marked “Favorit,” which I take to be the pattern name. The silver overlay is stamped “Spahn 1000.” I may have misread the word “Spahn” because it is very faint. I think the “1000” may mean the overlays are pure sterling silver. It is a complete set comprising of the teapot with lid, creamer, sugar with lid, six cups and six saucers, all in perfect condition. It will be much appreciated if you can give me an idea of the date when this set was manufactured and what it may be worth. I have no plans to sell the set, as it will be passed along to my daughter. I am just curious to know its present value.

A: Hutschenreuther Porcelain was found-ed by Carl Hutschenreuter in Hohenberg, Bavaria, Germany, in 1914. They are known for their ex-tremely high quality dinnerware and figurines. They are still in business and also produce limited-edition pieces. The word “Spahn” is actually “Spahr.” Ger-man designer, Carl Spahr, developed a technique of decorating porcelain and glass with silver overlay. His overlay was used by Hutschenreuter Porcelain Factory and Rosenthal Porcelain and Glass Co., as well as other factories and glass designers. Objects marked “Spahr 1000” show that the purest form of silver was used. “Favorit” refers to the shape of the porcelain dishes. Your set was made in the mid-20th century and would be worth $800 to $1,200.

Q: I have enclosed the mark that is on the bottom of a porcelain cat figurine that was my mother’s. He has white fur, a blue tail, toes and collar. His ears are touched with both blue and pink. His tail is straight up in the air, and his overall height is 10 inches. I remember my mother always kept him on the top shelf of the china cupboard. She told us we could look at him but not to touch or pick him up. My mother recently decided to give him to me, and I hope you can tell me something about his history and value.

A: Kay Finch made your figurine. She and her husband, Braden, opened a small pottery in 1939 in Corona Del Mar, Calif. She created and de-

signed animals and birds, especially dogs. Her son, George, eventually joined the pottery and designed nonfigural pieces. In 1963, Finch closed her pottery shop following the death of her husband. Your cat is known as “Hannibal, the Angry Cat” and was made in the early 1940s. Several years ago, the value was in the high hundreds. Today it would probably be worth $75 to $125.

Crushing on England The United States of America “won” the XXX Olympics -- which is fitting in oh-so-many ways. For if there’s any country that can turn an XXX trick, it’s the United States. No, I’m not a self-loathing liberal or a drum-beating right winger --- there’s a reason why I write sports. I typically care not about the political arena, and I consider myself to be one of those “moderate” types in that I don’t stockpile shotgun shells, but still, on occasion, brush with fluoride toothpaste. My point is this: England -- sorry, Great Britain and (more to the point) the great city of London -- showed why they’re our favorite crush. Try as we might, for all of our preening and Ameri-can braggadocio, England always socks us right in the kisser, and we love her all the more for it, don’t we? That little island once dominated and colo-nized most of the world. Sure, their food always sucked (still does, save for the chocolate and genuine Indian food), and for a time they just kind of hung out in the soot and smog of their indus-trial age, but at least they have been around long enough to have “ages.” And they had character --- characters, I should say. When they weren’t burning down the White House (Wikipedia that, kids), they were still careful to avoid the Plague, Nazis and the Artful Dodger. Ever since the Fab Four caught that flight into Idlewild Airport, we’ve been smitten with our one-time oppressors. Sure, every so often they pull our pigtails and say silly things like “we invent-ed baseball, divorce and tank warfare,” but we are able to look past that because we’re in love. The television coverage of the 2012 Olym-pics reminded us of that fact in so many ways. We certainly looked -- NBC pulled in its biggest ratings ever. And what a show it was. The Queen jumping out of planes with James Bond. The Spice Girls, pleasant weather, Mitt Romney’s dancing horse and no terrorism. Simply smashing! So we “won” the games, hauling in 104 medals in total -- 46 of which were of the golden variety. China came in second, scoring 88 med-als, but they can take solace in the fact that our athletes have to pay taxes on those medals (partly true, according to Snopes.com), so a chunk of our medals will be going to them anyway. In the end, our National Broadcasting Company made sure to sell out. When it wasn’t holding back the goods by delaying coverage (but telling us the outcomes beforehand), NBC was cutting off the closing ceremonies. Britain was giv-ing us The Who, and we were off screwing around with some stupid sitcom. Maybe, like most long relationships, we can just laugh off our faults (and Bob Costas) and hope our lovers see them as charming quirks. At least we’re consistent.

Dialing in on distance control

Good distance control on the putting green is critical if you want to improve your score. The next time you are warming up before a round of golf, try this drill to help you with your distance control:

Put three tees in the ground, about 3 feet from each other. Drop a few balls about 15 to 20 feet away from the furthest tee. Putt your first ball to the furthest tee, your second ball to the second furthest tee, and your third ball to the closest tee. Repeat that a few times until you are able to dial in on each distance. You will find that once you get out onto the golf course your are better able to adapt to the varying distances of each putt. You will see an improvement in both your putting confidence and in your score.

came in faster than they could fill them.• Badynee took the revenue from those sales to

protect and patent his invention. Besides any profit he has made, perhaps his greatest reward was the high praise he received in the feature story and rave review of his unique idea in “Bass Player Magazine.”

• A well-known invention marketed very successfully via television infomercials is the Snuggie. This soft and fleecy blanket with the big, droopy sleeves quickly rushed to the rescue and solved a problem most people didn’t even know they had.

• Since the Snuggie covers your entire body but keeps your arms free thanks to its sleeves, wearers stay warm while still retaining the ability to take a sip of their drink, change the channel or turn the page of a book.

• Snuggie TV commercials were first introduced in 2008 and were an instant success. And with the help of shapely and attractive female Snuggie-wearing models with seductive winks and smiles, more than 20 million Snuggies were sold the following year.

• But the Snuggie wasn’t the first product of its kind on the market. An earlier version of this same idea was the Slanket, invented by young college freshmen Gary Clegg.

• But because it’s not easy to patent a textile product, and because Clegg was totally inexperienced in product manufacturing, advertising and marketing, his Slanket idea never quite made the big time.

• Although imitation may be considered the sincerest form of flattery, it’s a pretty safe bet that Clegg felt something less than pride as he watched the Snuggie rocket to success and completely corner the market. ■
