Industrialization and globalization lead to increase in production rates in industries and as a result the
concept of automation is being introduced in the industries. The robots fulfil this requirement of the rapid
automation with increase in accuracy and reduction in the idle time. The idea of robotic arm is inspired by

the same concept and aspires to provide a helping
hand in the day to day production work and other
services by reducing the human intervention and
uniform quality. The industrial robot of today may not
be the least bit like a human being although all the
research is directed to provide more and more
anthropomorphic and humanlike features and super-
human capabilities in these. One type of robot
commonly used in industry is a robotic manipulator or
simply a mechanical arm. It is an open or closed
kinematic chain of rigid links interconnected by movable joints. In some configurations, links can be
considered to correspond to human anatomy as waist, upper arm and forearm with joint at shoulder and
elbow. Our vision is to develop an open kinematic chain and a flexible robotic arm which is going to be
used in welding, painting and pick and place purpose.
Topic of the Seminar: “Shape Memory Alloys.”
Guide Name : Mr. Ravi Shankar Padwa (Asst. Prof. (Sr.), ME)
Names of the Student : Himanshu Pandey (Final Year, ME , JIET)
With advancement in the Material Science that led to the introduction of Smart Materials
which are designed in such a way that their properties will change in response to the
environment. The Shape Memory Alloys (SMA's) belong to a class of shape memory
materials (SMMs), which have the ability to 'memorize' or retain their previous form when
subjected to certain stimulus such as thermo- mechanical or magnetic variations. They
are the material which exhibit two unique properties, the pseudo elasticity, and the
shape memory effect. The fundamental to the Shape memory effect is occurrence of a martensitic phase
transformation and its subsequent reversal. Basically, a shape memory alloy (SMA) is deformed in the
martensitic condition (martensite), and the shape recovery occurs during heating when the specimen
undergoes a reverse transformation of the martensite to its parent phase. This is the essence of the
shape memory effect. Materials that exhibit shape memory behaviour also show a two-way shape
memory, as well as a phenomenon called super elasticity. Basically they act as a compact actuators in
their application wherever needed. The Nickel-Titanium alloys (NiTi-NOLs) is the most widely used shape
memory alloy for the development smart textile and clothing like fire-fighter suits, self-ironing clothes,
antiballistic jackets, animated kinetic clothes etc. The shape memory alloys also have a wide application
in medical like dental braces, engines, coupling, engines, aerospace and robotics. Recently, many
researchers have taken an experimental approach to enhance the attributes of SMAs, by improving the
material compositions (quantifying the SMA phase transition temperature to achieve a wider operating
temperature range, and better material stability, as well as to improve the material response and stroke
with better mechanical design (or approach), controller systems and fabrication processes. The
challenges in designing SMA applications are to overcome their limitations, which include a relatively
small usable strain, low actuation frequency, low controllability, low accuracy and low energy efficiency
The purpose of this seminar to study and research about the Shape memory alloys due to their
significant interest and attention in recent years in wide range of commercial applications due to their
unique and superior properties.
