Colton Groome & Co. wins business awardBy Colleen Watson It was 15 years ago when George Groome helped create the UNC Asheville Family Business Forum (FBF). His goal was to bring best-in-class speakers to Asheville from successful family businesses to share their knowledge and experience. The FBF provides content on a variety of topics, chief among them are strategies on maximizing the well-being of a family business and how to successfully transition to the next generation.
Partnering with the university has been a great way for the organization to focus on educational programs and professional development. UNC Asheville is a well-known institution in the city, having joined the University of North Carolina System in 1969. While its roots date back to 1927, it has been through many name changes and seen many locations in Asheville in its 89-year history. What hasn’t changed, however, is its ongoing support of the community and Asheville’s businesses.
Members of the FBF comprise family businesses that cross many industries, from service organizations to manufacturing and product development. Some of the family businesses date back to the 1800s, and many have won awards for their successful operations.

The awards will be presented by the Wake Forest University Family Business Center and media sponsor Business North Carolina. This annual NC award is a great way to draw attention to family businesses, which are so important to Asheville and the surrounding area.
WNC Homes (WNC) recently had an opportunity to sit down with G. Tate Groome, Co-CEO of Colton Groome &
Company to discuss the family business and its impact on Asheville.
WNC: Tell us a little bit about your business?
GTG: Henry Colton founded the company in 1950. We have 12 employees including my father, George, who is Chairman. My brother, Matt, and I are equal partners with our father and Co-CEOs. Our business is service-oriented and focuses on providing comprehensive financial guidance, life insurance strategies, retirement
planning and investment advisory services. And while Henry has passed away now, his impact is still felt strongly in our company every day.
WNC: How has the Family Business Forum helped you and your business?
GTG: The educational and other events put on by the Family Business Forum provide great insight, giving you much needed time to work on business rather than in business and to basically, get out of the weeds. And, it’s a great place for reflection, but it’s also an intimate

place where people share more about themselves and business than they might otherwise. Your guard goes down and everyone benefits through a transfer of knowledge and experience. People are there for the same reason—to be better at what we do.
WNC: How has your business impacted the quality of life in this area?
GTG: One of the greatest acts of philanthropy is having a successful business, which helps provide meaningful work and income to our employees. Our strategy is to hire exceptional staff and pay them exceptionally well. Also, our company’s charitable Community Support Fund provides support to numerous organizations and through this fund, we give 10% of our profits back to WNC. The fund enables us to continue to be thoughtful and conscientious on how to give back to the community.
WNC: What do you think should be Asheville’s main focus to support and maintain our quality of life?
GTG: There’s a lot of talk about how difficult it is to find a good job in Asheville. Asheville has a great quality of life, which is drawing many retirees and people of wealth to the city. Unless you are fortunate enough to be part of a family business or you work in the medical industry as a physician or other professional, it can be difficult for our younger people to find work. It’s important for Asheville to continue to bring in industry and more jobs. I think that’s a big concern right now. We have to ask, “How can we bring more high
paying jobs to Asheville? How can our younger people come here and make a good living?”
WNC: How has Asheville’s changing culture been reflected in your business over the years?
GTG: We’re seeing profound growth in Asheville and the surrounding area from retirees and others moving here and wanting to find a local advisor who can serve them well … and not just them, but for their family. I think this influx of people has had an impact on our strategy. These new people want to work with a firm close to where they live and they also want to be comfortable that the firm they choose will be around for future generations to take care of both their current as well as future needs. Founded in 1950, Colton Groome & Company will be around for our 100th anniversary in 2050. My brother and I are in our 30s and we will continue to be here with ownership and management in place for the future.
WNC: When you think of life in Asheville, what’s the first thing that comes to mind?
GTG: Home. My best friend and I were in the hospital at the same time. We were born one day apart and have been best friends ever since. Asheville … this is home.

supporting them, we strengthen our community, which positively impacts our lives.
