Two events in 2019 clearly stand out above the rest the arrival of the new mobile branch to replace the aging bookmobile and the development and Council approval of plans for Library facility updates and the addition of an auditorium and community meeting room

2019 Highlightsbull After more than a year of waiting the new mobile branch was completed in Den-ver Colorado and arrived in South Bruns-wick ready to roll The custom-built vehicle has replaced the outdated bookmobile

bull SBPLrsquos English as a Second Language program received a $49000 NJ Depart-ment of Labor Literacy grant which has helped grow a service with nearly triple the participants of a year ago A renewal for a $54000 grant in 2020 has already been approved

bull Other grants awarded to SBPL in 2019 supported a variety of services in areas in-cluding the arts local history construction funding the Affordable Care Act and more

bull We celebrated South Brunswick Reads our community-wide reading partnership between the school district and the Library with the theme Reading Around the Globe To reflect the diversity in the Township Li-brary staff created a display with the world map and pushpins showing the countries represented by our staff

bull A Universe of Stories Summer Reading program promoted science and technology related activities for all ages inspired by the 50th anniversary of the NASA moon landing We celebrated with related crafts movies and seminars including a presenta-tion by a local NASA representative

bull Also during the summer the LMxAC consortium hosted a Trading Card Challenge featuring baseball-style cards for each of the 32 member libraries Whoever collected a card from each of the libraries earned a spot in a random drawing for prizes SBPL had the most finalists with 13

bull Author Tracey Baptiste was the Founda-tionrsquos guest for its annual Author Dinner Gala Nearly 100 ticket holders attended this Caribbean-themed event to meet Baptiste author of the middle-grade book series The Jumbies

bull To remove barriers to access the Board of Trustees approved the removal of rental fees for video games and eliminated the 25-cent fee for item holds or reserves

bull SBPL and the 31 members of LMxAC in-stituted the Value Savings Statement on all borrower receipts The Statement reminds patrons of the savings for borrowing library materials instead of buying them

bull The Foundation hosted its firstndashever Young Orators Competitions for students in grades 5 and 4 A competition for third graders is scheduled for January 12th

bull After much work and revision the Trust-eersquos Library renovation and expansion plans were approved by the Township in the fall more on that in 2020

bull The Library Foundation has updated their logo created a Facebook page of its own and has agreed to embark on a $500000 capital fundraising campaign for the facility upgrades and auditorium in the New Year

SBPL has had a wonderful year with much to be thankful for Progress for an expan-sion removal of two types of borrower fees and the dedication of the new Mobile Branch We are grateful for the support of the Mayor Council Township Friends and Foundation We have many projects and plans in store to bring us closer to our 2020 Vision

Hometown Heroes are a group of notable people who live or have lived in South Brunswick throughout the years Home-town Heroes include people such as Aaron Hush (pictured above) a Black Civil War Veteran to Winifred Cook an award win-ning writer for the Home News

This diverse group includes those who have made a positive contribution to town as well as veterans and those lost in war It also chronicles artists athletes historians and more

SBPL Launches Hometown Heroes

Registration for the Librarys Spring 2020 session of the English Institute opens this month This popular intensive class is de-signed to improve your grammar reading writing and overall communication in English

Classes will begin in February and run though May but registration is required All levels are welcome to register classes are free and open to residents of New Jersey

Registration must be done in person and involves a short assessment done on the computer Class placements will be made according to number of registrants and fluency

Registration dates and times are as fol-lows Monday Jan 13 from 11 am to 3 pm Wednesday Jan 15 from 5 to 8 pm and Friday Jan 17 from 1 to 5 pm

Printed at the bottom of every borrowerrsquos check-out receipt now is a value state-ment that reads ldquoCongratulations By borrowing from your library you have saved $rdquo It sure is good to feel like someone just put money in your pocket

Borrowers at SBPL and the other 30 libraries of the LMxAC consortium recent-ly arranged to have this savings message automatically printed on every borrowerrsquos checkout receipt The hope is that the message conveys to the borrower the tre-mendous value that libraries really do offer The market value of each item borrowed at every checkout is calculated and added up to make the point very personal

This new feature on the checkout receipt allows patrons to see how much money they save by borrowing material from the library rather than purchasing the same items in a store or online Staff have always known the value of the library whether it be from borrowing or attending many of our free programs Now our customers can see on a regular basis what theyre saving every time they get their checkout receipt says Judy Pietrobono SBPL Assistant Director

The checkout receipt still shows the time and date of the checkout as well as the due date for each item checked out and the call number item number and title of each item
