Parents and teachers will soon be able to rest a little easier when 6 689 foot patrollers will be deployed at vari-ous schools across Gauteng to ensure the safety of its pupils.
This joint initiative between the Gauteng departments of Education and Infrastructure Development and Community Safety is part of the school safety strategy that was adopted by the Gauteng Provincial Department of the Executive Council in June 2010.
“We started by providing fences to schools that had little or no fencing. About 540 schools were fenced since the end of last year to June this year,” said Charles Phahlane, spokesperson for the Department of Education.
He said the patrollers would be deployed at under performing and high-risk schools at no additional cost.
“The reason is the majority of under performing schools are also schools where parents cannot afford school fees. Therefore these schools do not have sufficient resources to safeguard their schools,” he said.
Phahlane said when a school is clas-sified as a high-risk school on objec-
tive criteria it would be included in the programme.
He added that the project targets 1 578 schools including Alma School, Burgher Right Primary School, Capital Park Pri-mary School, Clapham High School, Glenstantia Primary School, Waterkloof Primary School and Waverley Girls’ High School among others.
“High-risk schools or schools with large numbers of pupils will be allo-cated up to a maximum of six patrol-lers that will be working night and day shifts to ensure the safety of the pupils,” he said.
He said patrollers would be supplied with two-way radios, uniforms and metal detectors. They will also be connected to a police vehicle to request backup when needed.
“They will have a general supervi-sor who will manage them and reduce the workload on principals. Supervi-sors will keep all records, attendance registers, pay sheets and worker’s contracts,” he said.
He said the rollout started in Septem-ber and should be concluded by next year.

A portion of land situated on the Bon Accord nature reserve east of the Soutpan Road has become the centre of a furious debate between concerned community members, AfriForum and a property developer.
Rekord recently reported that Afri- Forum, together with members of the community, started a petition in September to stop the Brian Falconer Property Group in their tracks.
The property group recently applied to deproclaim portion 41 of the reserve in order to develop housing units there.
According to AfriForum, their main concern is the Onderstepoort Disease Research Centre across the road from the land.
“A variety of deadly diseases are researched there and it is alleged that if an illness breaks out, the institute will only be able to assist the existing resi-dents,” Julian Kleynhans, AfriForum’s Head of Environmental Affairs, said.
Dr Livio Heath of the Onderstepoort Disease Research Centre confirmed their main concern centres on the high contamination facility, adjacent to the area.
“There is a risk because it is an Animal Research Centre. Residents currently living in the area are staff members and their family members. Therefore, the contingency plans and precautions are manageable at the moment. If a large number of people were to live here, this might not be the case.”
This is only one part of the contro-versial debate, surrounding portion 41
of the Onderstepoort nature reserve. According to Peter Williams from
the Brian Falconer Property Group, the group began the process of purchasing the land in 2006.
“The land was bought for develop-ment purposes and as such, a due di- ligence process was undertaken, which included the consulting of the Tshwane Town Planning Department and researching Tshwane development guideline publications,” said Williams.
After they submitted a full Envi-ronmental Impact Assessment to the Gauteng Department of Agriculture, Culture and Environment in 2008, the Department issued a Record of Deci-sion denying permission to develop the land.
Williams said the department did not at any time advise them on the status of the land and that the land was identified as ‘suitable and desira-ble for development’ in the Tshwane documentation they previously recei-ved.
He further said that when they ap-proached the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development for advice on how to resolve the situa-tion, they recommended that the group apply to deproclaim the portion of land from the nature reserve, which they then did.
This is where the whole furore over the land started. All the relevant de-proclamation documents have since been submitted to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
The case is still under review and all affected parties are anxiously awaiting the results.

Investigation after fightValeska Abreu
An internal investigation is under way at the Tshwane metro police offices after a shoot-out incident occured on Saturday in Zambesi Drive, Sinoville.
It is believed that the metro police were conducting routine rounds when they noticed a suspicious vehicle driving negligently and subsequently pulled it over.
According to Ben Strydom, spokesperson at the Sinoville police station, the metro police asked the driver for his licence to which the driver responded, he did not have one.
Strydom said the occupants of the vehicle were resistant and a fight broke out between the metro police and the occupants. The occupants allegedly tried to relieve one of the officers of his firearm.
“The metro cop then shot at them, wounding one in the upper leg and foot and another also in the foot,” he said.
Police then arrived on the scene and accor-ding to Strydom the wounded individuals were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. He said they were charged with attempted robbery, but the court dropped the charge pending the investigation.

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng has welcomed the order by Minister of Trans-port, Sibusiso Ndebele, to halt all road project work relating to the tolling of national roads last week.
According to Janet Semple, DA Member of the Provincial Legislature, there are still too many unanswered questions before the tolling system should be allowed to continue.
“The marginalised members of our society will be asked to pay more from an ever dimin-ishing pool of resources.
“Therefore the DA encour-ages the community not to register for the tolling system
e-tags until we have clarity on where the money is going, how the system will be managed, what security measures will be in place to protect road users and their banking details. We also have to question the true cost of the tolling system.”
She added that the campaign, Toll Free GP, would continue until motorists had their ques-tions answered. “The DA has enabled ordinary citizens to hold the government and the South African National Road Agency Limited (Sanral) to ac-count. We will continue to take a stand for the millions who will be negatively affected by this system,” she said.

In ’n tweede voorval het vier verdagtes, waarvan twee gewapen, ’n man by ’n motorvoertuighandelaar in Zambesirylaan beroof nadat hy R22 500 by ’n nabygeleë bank onttrek het.

Scores of protestors participated in the ANCYL march on Friday morning, despite some of them being angry with their leader, Julius Malema.

the Union Buildings, because of sleeping in the cold while it was believed that Malema slept at a fancy hotel. “We were promised a good breakfast this morning, but all we got were rolls. We are tired and hungry,” said a disgruntled protestor.
When Malema arrived at the Caledonian
stadium on Friday morning, he called the masses for their ‘appointment at the Union Buildings’.
Some delayed the process of joining the march because of their grievances with Malema, but by the time the procession reached Beatrix Street there were thousands of them singing and chanting.
The march was part of a two-day pro- cess that started in Johannesburg where memorandums were handed to the Cham-ber of Mines and the Johannesburg Stock Exchange and ended with their last memo-randum handed over to newly appointed Public Works Minister, Thulas Nxesi, at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.
The protestors, together with the lea-dership of ANCYL, waited for over an hour in the scorching heat as Malema refused to hand over the memorandum to any Director General.
“We do not want to hand over the memorandum to any ordinary government employee, we prefer a minister or deputy minister,” said Malema.
Malema further told protestors that if a minister is not available at the Union Build-ings, they must phone them and they can come to the Union Buildings in a jiffy as they are driven in blue light vehicles.
There was also a heavy presence of the country’s elite crime fighting unit, the spe-cial task force, at the Union Buildings.
Malema thanked the protestors for their good behaviour after the memorandum was handed over and dismissed the crowds, adding that people expected the march to be violent. “Comrades, you have disap-pointed a whole number of people with your top-class behaviour. People expected our march to be violent and the same people who kept on saying that, are people who can’t even organise themselves a birth-day party of 20 people,” said Malema.

is.

Inwoners betoog
Kiara Myburgh, Leah Eizenberg en Danielle Visser het hul stemme laat hoor tydens ’n betoging teen sirkusse met diere voorverlede Saterdag.

The first of many exciting jean-drives that forms part of Rekord’s Jeans 5000 campaign was held at The Grove Mall this past weekend.
According to Leanne Nel, marketing manager at The Grove Mall, about 300 jeans were donated on Saturday and they are expecting much more donations.
Not only were shoppers, family and friends entertained with an exciting fashion show, but also with various dance items.
This project is an initiative launched by the Rekord Charity Fund to collect 5 000 jeans (old or new) to distribute among the poor throughout Pretoria during the festive season.
“Clothes are more dura-ble than toys. That’s why we decided to donate jeans,” said Adri Bouwer, marketing ma-nager of Rekord.
The Soviet Group took
notice and donated 500 jeans to the cause.
Soviet also agreed to give a discount voucher for a new jean to each person who donates one.
Each person who drops off a jean at a Soviet Clothing shop will receive a 25% discount voucher.
The drive will continue throughout November and jeans can be dropped off at the following loca-tions:
l Soviet Clothing (phone 011-808-6500 to find a Soviet Clothing shop nea-rest to you).
l Woodlands Boulevard.

8 REKORD NOORD VRYDAG 4 NOVEMBER 2011 www.rekord.co.za

God has a wonderful and amazing destiny for each person, but because of insecurities, deep hurts, a lack of con-fidence or the opinions of others, some people never seem to fulfil their destiny.
To achieve that destiny you will have to confront and conquer those things that had a negative impact on your life. If you are unwilling to identify and con-quer those issues, you will never be able to rise above them.
2 Corinthians 3:18 (AMP): And all of us, as with unveiled face, [because we] continued to behold [in the Word of God] as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are constantly being transfig-ured into His very own image in ever increasing splendour and from one degree of glory to another; [for this comes] from the Lord [Who is] the Spirit.
As children, we used to sing Mir-ror, mirror, on the wall; who is the most beautiful opinions, it just remained a fairytale song.
When I started to discover that my opinion of myself and other people’s
opinion of me did not really matter any longer, because I started to realise that they never formed me in my mother’s womb.
I turned to the Lord who is my Maker and chose to believe what the Scripture says, namely that the Lord constantly transforms us into His very own image.
When Adam and Eve, as God’s image bearers, believed Satan’s lie in the Gar-den of Eden, their image became twisted and distorted.
However, constant time in the mirror of God’s Word will transform and restore that broken image. You can improve and even change your destiny. I encourage you to start today.

Ingedoen skryf:Ek wil Rekord-lesers waarsku teen ’n
’n Vrou wat haar as me.
Hy handig my toe oor na hul ‘ingenieur’
Indien so ’n persoon jou kontak sit eerder die foon neer. Indien jy reeds so ’n oproep ontvang het en gedoen het wat hulle vra, stel ek voor dat jy jou rekenaar afsit en by ’n rekenaartegnikus uitkom.
Petro van Rensburg writes:We received an advert in our post from
a gardening service claiming they are cheaper than any other gardening service as well as the current service we use, if we use one. They did a quote for us and were cheaper than our current service, so obvi-ously we agreed to use them.
The gardening service then pitched on October 1, with two men and did our garden. However, their rules are they have to be paid cash only, up front the first day that they start. So obviously we paid them on the first day they started. The follow-
ing Saturday they were supposed to come again, but by 12:00 they had not arrived yet. I tried to phone the manager but his cell phone was constantly off, with the message ‘the subscriber you have dialled is not available at present, please try again later’. I have been trying to get hold of him ever since, with no results. He gave me an invoice on the first day when I paid him but the registration number on the invoice was registered in another company’s name, which was deregistered in February already. It looks like we have hit another scam.
Gardening scam rears its head

Off the RekordPhillip Bruwer
In die martelstoelGewoonlik as almal die somer
groet en dan wanneer die Jakarandas begin val, is dit weer dáái tyd van die jaar - tyd vir my 6-maandelikse check-up by die tandarts. Nou kyk, my tandarts is baie nice, sy is mooi, vriendelik en sy onthou my naam en al die ongemaklike gesprekke wat ons al gehad het, al het ek met ’n stofsuier in my mond gepraat.
“So hoe gaan dit?” vra sy.
Daar lê ek, agtertoe met my mond wawyd oop.

Sports car owners cruise through streetsRon Sibiya
A number of British sports cars, both antique and modern, moved through Pretoria’s streets on October 16.
The cars were driven for 50km after departing from Freedom Park, where they met and ended at the MG Club house in Menlopark.
Organised by the MG Car Club Northern Centre, the route from Freedom Park included Johan Rissik Drive, Lynnwood Road as well as Charles, Eastwood and Tom Jenkins streets.
A number of the cars joining the drive hail from as far back as the 1930s.
The MG Car Club gets its name from the Morris Garages in England, famous for its wide range of cars, including its iconic open two-seaters.
“The MG Car Clubs are probably the most well-known and consistently run car clubs in the world,” said John Hugo of the MG Car Club Northern Centre.
With a MG Car Club in al-most all major regions in South Africa, such fun drives are
organised once every two years in different parts of the country.
MG Car Club Northern Centre was established ap-proximately 30 years ago and currently boasts a membership of more than 100.
Last Sunday’s fleet of cars included a number of iconic models.
This includes the car that probably launched the MG brand into the world.
Morris Garages launched its TD model post World War II.
This car enjoyed huge popu-larity among American soldiers.
The B series of the 60s and 70s still holds the record for the most popular sports car ever made.
The first ‘Hatch Back’ ever was the MG B GT.
This styling and design pioneer can today be seen in almost every car brand in the world.
In recent years the brand has undergone many changes of fortune, most recently launch-ing the MG6.
Models from the 2000s included the mid-engines F and TF sports cars and the ZR Saloon and the ZT Sedan.

Sport cars on show bask in limelight
The Roof of Africa race, regarded as one of the toughest motorcycle enduro races in the world, will take place from November 24 to 26 in Lesotho and marks the 44th running of this prestigious event.
The Roof of Africa spans more than four decades.
After the success of the 2010 event and the international interest in this race, the Lesotho Off-road Association (Lora) together with Motorsport SA and its spon-
sors and partners, competitors can again look forward to a demanding race that will stretch over three days.
The race begins with the traditional and extremely popular Round the Houses race in the streets of Maseru.
According to a spokesperson for Lora, Charles Mopeli, the association is looking forward to host this event again. “The Roof of Africa has a long and rich racing history and we would like to see this event going
from strength to strength,” he said.Over the last few years, it has become a
motorcycle only event and has drawn even more international competitors.
It has become one of those events on the racing calendars of all, top enduro and extreme enduro riders that they have to do some or other time in their careers.
Motorsport SA and Lora worked hard to settle their differences and work together towards making the 2011 event a success.

Estate agents receive recognition for good work
Following the completion of their formal training, professional practitioners inclu- ding doctors, lawyers and architects, en-gage in Continuous Professional Develop-ment (CPD) to maintain and enhance their knowledge, technical skills and perform-ance.
While property investment has yet to be recognised as the specialised profession that it is, providing housing to millions of South Africans, professional property investors appreciate the value of staying on top of the game.
CPD can be defined as ‘any process or activity that provides added value to the capability of the individual through an increase in professional knowledge, skills and the personal qualities necessary for the appropriate execution of professional and technical duties, often termed ‘compe-tence’.
In today’s rapidly evolving world, CPD is absolutely essential to ensure professio- nals stay on top of their game and remain abreast with the continuous changes in trends, regulations and technology as well as improved or new products and services.
In fact, in many professions, a minimum number of recognised CPD hours have been legislated as a requirement for conti- nued practice.
It is true that the property investment business model is so simple and stream-lined that many investors may feel that CPD is not necessary.
Yet, although there are no formal CPD requirements in the property investment field, those property investors who take a professional approach to their property
investment portfolios recognise the benefits of continuously improving their knowledge and skills.
“There are many ways in which property investors can keep their knowledge and skills razor sharp,” commented Dr Koos du Toit, CEO of P3 Investment Group.
“These include desktop research, reading industry newsletters and publica-tions, attending workshops and seminars and reading the latest books and reports published on the subject of property invest-ment. “There are, however, two crucial issues investors should consider. Firstly, investors need to avoid an ‘information overload’ that clouds the real issues and can result in what is termed ‘analysis paralysis’ and secondly, to ensure that the source of the information they are receiving is credible and trustworthy.”
The sheer volume of new information that becomes available everyday has re-sulted in the coining of the term ‘informa-tion overload’.
Many professionals, regardless of the industry they operate in, are simply overwhelmed by the number of e-mails, magazines, newspapers, books, confe- rences, seminars, workshops and web- sites pertinent to their field of specialisa-tion.
Too much information can hamper ef-fective decision making, as professionals fall into the trap of ‘analysis paralysis’ the over-analysis of an issue, challenge or op-portunity that results in a paralysis in which the person is unable to make a decision or take action.

Let children plant trees
Introduce children to the world of gardening during National Children’s Month.
Month and a great time to introduce children to the world of gardening.
Children are naturally inquisitive about all things and gardening will alert them to the exciting world of a garden ecosystem, where flora and fauna are linked in an intri-cate web.
Trees offer a physical link with childhood.
Plant a tree for each of your chil-dren when they get to the age of seven or eight years.
At this age, they will remember planting the tree.
Over the years, they will be able to watch their tree grow and recall the rosy memories of their childhood.

l Onderstepoort Vete-rinary Hospital receives many animals off the street and your missing pet might have been taken in. Dogs and cats that no one has claimed are also rehomed for the fee of sterilisation, vaccination and a microchip. For more information phone
Onderstepoort’s outpa-tients section on 012-529-8016.
l The Pretoria or Cen-turion SPCA might have taken in your pet. Phone 082-423-1985 or send information and photos to [email protected].
Before taking on a pet, the Tshwane SPCA recommends that pet owners consider several factors.
An animal is a long-term investment and cannot be discarded when it is no longer a cute puppy or is ill. A pet also needs to visit the veterinarian when sick, for annual vaccina-tions and to be sterilised as well as de-worming and parasite control.
You also need to arrange for kennelling or someone to look after the pet when you are away. You cannot leave an ani-mal indefinitely and think they will only eat a little food daily till you return.
According to the SPCA, ani-mals need fresh food and water
daily as well as exercise, love and attention.
Responsible pet owners should ensure that all cats and dogs are sterilised. If left unchecked they will impregnate or become pregnant.
The SPCA receives puppies regularly from owners who cannot find homes for them and the sad reality is that neither can the SPCA find homes for all of them.
After thinking it through and deciding to adopt a pet, consider adopting one from the SPCA.
All adopted cats and dogs are de-wormed, vaccinated, micro-chipped and sterilised.
This playful Maltese poodle is looking for a family to call his own. His kennel number is D8 and his disk number is 10276. Enquiries: Tshwane SPCA on 012-803-5219.
Take me home to have fun
This 2-year-old boerbull is eagerly waiting for a new family to adopt him. His kennel number is X-Run and his disk number is 12097. Enquiries: Tshwane SPCA on 012-803-5219.

REKORD NORTH FRIDAY NOVEMBER 4 2011 23www.rekord.co.za
Koos Venter
The University of Pretoria once again made its presence felt in the South African sports arena in 2011.
Not only were Tuks athletes prominent on the world stage by winning three of a total of four medals won by South Africa at the IAAF Athletics World Championships, but it also produced the best netball player in the world and the fastest athlete in the 400m hurdles for men for 2011.
Last Friday TuksSport honoured 214 Tukkies sportsmen, sportswomen and of-ficials who have been members of national senior, student and junior age group teams. This include:
l 96 national representatives of whom two represented Namibia, one Kenya and six Zimbabwe;
l 13 coaches and team managers ac-companying senior national teams in an official capacity to international competi-tions;
l 20 national federation team members
The popular head coach of TuksSquash, Liz MacKenzie, was appointed as best coach in an individual sport.
Tuks honours athletesof who two represented Zimbabwe;
l 49 national age group team members, two coaches and one manager accompany-ing these teams;
l 25 students and eight coaches or man-agers represented USSA sports teams;
l Most of the above as well as a further 232 Tuks athletes obtained senior provin-cial colours.
Tuks’ star athlete, LJ van Zyl, broke the 11-year-old SA 400m hurdles record on March 25 with a time of 47:66 (a time he achieved twice this year) which at the end of the athletics season, turned out to be the fastest time in the world for 2011.
Tuks’ Miss Netball, Erin Burger, was selected the best netball player in the world at the recent World Netball Championships.
At the IAAF World Championships, LJ van Zyl won bronze in the 400m hurdles, Caster Semenya won silver in the 800m and Team SA consisting of three Tuks athletes, LJ van Zyl, Oscar Pistorius and Willie de Beer, won a silver medal for the 4x400m relay for men.
Twenty-two Tuks athletes and seven officials represented the USSA team at the World Student Games in China. One of two gold medals won by Team SA, was in the 4x100m relay for men, with two Tukkies, Hannes Dreyer and Willie de Beer promi-nent.
Eventually LJ van Zyl was, for the third year in a row, chosen as the Tuks Sports-man of the Year. Erin Burger is the sports-woman of the year and TuksAthletics is the sports club of the year.
The enthusiastic squash couch, Liz Mac-Kenzie, was awarded the best coach in an individual sport, while Craig Fulton head coach of TuksHockey, is the best coach in a team sport.
The student sportsman and woman of the year were the athlete, Willie de Beer and the hockey player, Vusiyanani Mangisa.
In the category of Newsmaker of the year, the Paralympics athlete, Oscar Pisto-rius and the newly appointed captain of the South African limited overs cricket team, AB de Villiers, shared the award.

The Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust has announced a key departure for the 2012 Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour.
They have limited individual online entries to 30 000 and have opened the remaining 5 000 to charities and corporates in bonds. One bond contains ten entries
and these are allocated on a first come first serve basis to charities and corporates who apply to the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust.
The great benefit to charities that pur-chase bonds is that they are permitted to ‘late enter’ the names of their bond partici-pants up until the January 13, 2012, which is only eight weeks prior to the event.
Participants wishing to know more about charity bonds can phone the Cape Town Cycle Tour Trust on 021-681-4333.
