ANSWER: Having a patient who gets multiple values, thinks about what it means and cares enough to ask is a real pleasure for a physician. This degree in blood pressure variation is well with-in the expected norm. Your systolic pressure (the top number, and the peak blood pressure while the heart is expelling blood from the left ventricle into the aorta) is about 136, plus or minus seven points. Having multiple readings increases the precision of the measurement and allows your physician to make better deci-sions about the effectivenessof your treatment regimen. Your systolic number, however, is in the range of prehyper-tension, so your doctor will be keeping an eye on that. During the course of the day, systolic blood pressure readings can vary as much as 30 points. Even in the few minutes you took these, I often see variation as much or more than this. DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 70-year-old man with high blood pres-sure. I take a calcium channel blocker and a diuretic to control it. I am concerned about systolic readings that can vary 10-12 points whenItakemybloodpressurefive-10min-utes apart. A recent example: readings of 132, 143,140and133,takenfivetosixminutesapart.Mydiastolicreadingsdon’tvarymorethan a point or two in the mid-70s. Should I be concerned about these variations in systolic pressure? -- J.S.

Yard sale, tag sale, garage sale … whatever you call it, if you do it right, you can walk away with a decluttered home and a nifty bit of cash, too.

Here’s my tip: Advertise, advertise, advertise — on local mes-sage boards and websites, as well as using signs. The more people you drive to your sale, the more you are likely to sell. – JoAnn• “When you put jewelry out at a garage sale, display it for better results. Use a window screen for paired earrings, or maybe a tie rack for necklaces. I sell a lot of costume stuff in my sales. Kids especially like it.” – R.G. in Mississippi• One way to organize a tag sale is to group items in bins by price. Or have a dollar table. If you have lots of clothes, you might price it by the piece and have good price breaks for peo-ple who buy lots of pieces.• “Put well-marked sports equipment in a place that can be viewed by passersby. Make attractive displays of toys and tools as well. People are always looking for these.” – M.H. in Alabama

• Not sure how to price your items for resale? The rule for yard sales is as follows: For items that are new, still with tags or in original, unopened packaging, price

it as 50 percent off retail. For items that are in good working condition, with all parts and accessories, mark them at 30 percent of what you paid. Other items should be marked down to 20 percent. Be honest with yourself. If something is just usable, but not really worth a buck, put it in a “free” bin. Your customers will be grateful, and you might make an addi-tional sale.• Be sure to have plastic bags on hand. Boxes and newspaper are handy if you are selling any dishes or glassware, too.

March is a birthday month of the Girl Scouts. March 12 marked the 103rd anniversary of the day Juliette Gordon Low gathered 18 Savannah, Georgia, girls together for the organization’s first meeting. Let’s examine the history of this group and the fascinating woman who founded it.

• Juliette “Daisy” Gordon was born into a wealthy and priveleged Savannah family in 1860 and attended an exclusive boarding school and French finishing school. After her marriage to a very wealthy Englishman, Wil-liam Low, the couple moved to England.

• After several years abroad, Juliette’s marriage ended in divorce, and she returned to the States. Because she

Power HouseFoods

Are you getting your PFV? Powerhouse Fruits and Vegetables, that is. \

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has discovered a way to classify the nutrient value and health benefits in fruits and vegetables, and it re-leased a study that identifies “powerhouse” foods that can help reduce and prevent chronic disease. It’s the “nutrient density” that does the trick: how many of 17 necessary nutrients are present in each food. The CDC used an elaborate classification system to determine how to score each food item tested, based on kilocalories and grams, and involving terms like bioavailability, nutrient adequacy and energy density. Thankfully it is summed up for us in a handy chart (see www.cdc.gov/pcd/issues/2014/13_0390.htm).The results: The most nutrient-dense foods are wa-

Turn off water to the shower or bathroom at the nearest shutoff point. (This might be the shutoff for the entire home.) Carefully unscrew the shower head. If you can’t turn it by hand, wrap a soft cloth around the shower head to get a bettergrip.Ifyouneedtouseanadjustablewrenchtoloosentheshowerhead, wet the cloth and wrap it around the area that will be gripped by the wrench to preventitfromscratchingthefinish.Wash the shower head in warm soapy water to remove loose debris and rinse. Next, make a paste using approximately 2 parts baking soda to 1 part vinegar. As the paste foams, apply it to the shower head wherever mineral scale exists, using a soft brush. Pay attention to the sprayer holes: scale tends to build up and reduce the effectiveness of the spray. Set the shower head to the side for 10 to 20 minutes to let the foam work.Next, brush the paste onto the shower controls, particularly mineral buildup areas. Let the paste sit for at least 20 minutes. tercress, Chinese cabbage, chard, beet greens and spinach. Still important but near the bottom of the list of 41 powerhouse foods were grapefruits, sweet potatoes, leeks and blackberries.Ask your doctor if it would be helpful to add some of these foods to your diet. And there’s another reason to try to stay healthy, especially now: Flu season is setting up to be a whop-per. It recently was reported that one of the three vaccines in the shot has “drifted.” That means it’s mutated slightly away from what it is supposed to cover. The other two are providing coverage for their particular strain, but the big one isn’t 100 percent af-fective against that one strain of flu.Still, if you haven’t had a flu shot yet, get one. If you’re around children and grandchildren, encourage them to get their shots as well … so they don’t bring it home to you. Wash your hands frequently, and take antiseptic wipes with you to the store to clean the shopping-cart handle. (c) King Features Synd., Inc.

had lived such a financiallyprivileged life, she longed to do something meaningful with her life. In 1911, she met Sir Robert Baden-Powell, the founder of the Boy Scouts. This meeting changed the course of her life, setting her in an entirely new direction.

• In 1912, Juliette invited 18 girls to the first meeting of her Girl Scouts group. She directed them on a mission of physical, mental, and spiritual development, along with community service. Her goal was to empower the girls by teaching the values of honesty, fairness, cour-age, compassion, character, sisterhood, confidence, and citizenship. The girls played sports, went on camping trips, studied the arts, practiced homemaking skills, learned first aid and survival skills, and sold war bonds. Their achievements are still recognized through rank advancement and by various special awards such as the Girl Scout Bronze, Silver, and Gold Awards.

DEARPAW’SCORNER:Mypoodlemix,“Shep,”lovestojumpuponthekitchencounter—notjustput his paws up, but his entire body. He will do it whether we’re in the kitchen or not. My husband thinks it’s funny, but I don’t. How can I get Shep to stop?—JuliainPhoenix,Arizona

DEAR JULIA: I agree, it’s not funny. Shep clearly thinksit’sallrighttojumpontothecounterbecausehe’s getting those positive vibes from your husband. And unless you persuade your husband to stop thinking it’s funny, teaching Shep not to do it will be verydifficult.Make sure, of course, that when you’re not in the kitchen, nothing remains on the countertop that would present a danger to Shep. That includes leftovers, cleaners, houseplants—anythingthathemight chew on or ingest.Firstthingsfirst:MakeitcleartoShepthathecan’tcome into the kitchen at all without your leave. Start

by setting up a toddler gate at the entrance. (One that’s pretty high, since it sounds like he’s a good jumper.)When you’re in the kitchen cooking or cleaning, leaveShepoutofit.Ifhewhines,tellhimto“sit”and“stay,”andcontinueworking.Onceyou’vefinishedworking, you can let him in, as long as he’s super-vised.Ifhetriestojumponthecounter,firmlytellhim“down,”andescorthimoutsidethetoddlergateagain.Both you and your husband need to be on the same page. Shep needs to make the connection that certain behavior in the kitchen will mean he doesn’t get to go in the kitchen. It will take a little while, so be patient, but consistent.

Thought for the Day: “In science one tries to tell people, in such a way as to be understood by everyone, something that no one ever knew before. But in poetry, it’s the exact op-posite.” — Paul Dirac- (c) King Features Synd. Inc.

You don’t hear much about savings bonds anymore. Low interest rates for certificates of deposit and savings accounts have many

consumers assuming that there just isn’t anywhere to put money that earns any interest. But savings bonds are still around (since 1935) and still paying interest.Benefits of bonds include:• No state or local taxes on the interest. Federal taxes on the interest can be deferred until the bond is mature or you cash it in. And some bonds are tax-free if used for education.• Starting small. It costs only $25 to buy a Series EE bond and $50 for a Series I bond.Since 2012 there is only one way to buy bonds (you can’t go to your local bank anymore), directly from the Treasury Department in the form of an electronic bond. Go online to TreasuryDirect at http://www.treasurydirect.gov, click Individual, and scroll down the left side to the types of bonds that are available.Study each type of bond to know what you’re getting. For example, series EE bonds dated from May 2005 have a fixed interest rate, with the interest added monthly. Series I bonds have an interest rate based on a combination of fixed rate and inflation that changes twice a year. You’ll need to open an online account if you want to buy or redeem Series

EE and I savings bonds, buy bonds as a gift or enroll in a payroll savings plan automatic purchase of bonds.Know what your financial plans are before you purchase bonds. Series I, for example, are for long-term investments, and earn interest for up to 30 years. You can cash them in after one year, but if you cash them up to five years from purchase, you’ll lose three months of interest. (If you’re cashing in bonds, know when the interest is recalculated and cash them after the new interest is added.)If you’ve had the paper version of bonds in the past, you paid half the face value, for example, $50 for a $100 bond. The electronic bonds are now sold at face value.Look for the growth calculator on TreasuryDirect to get an idea of the future value of your bonds, especially if you have a long-term financial plan and will buy bonds on a regular basis.David Uffington believes that hard-working people are looking for sound, straight-from-the-shoulder information on how to save, spend, and protect our money without having to translate Wall Street punditry or untangle the pie-in-the-sky schemes that promise much but typically deliver only disap-pointment. Real people deserve real personal financial advice—and that’s what they get with “Dollars and Sense.” (c) King Features Synd., Inc.

Savings Bonds Still Earn Interest

It was novelist Tom Clancy who made the following sage observation:

“The difference between fiction and reality? Fiction has to make sense.”

The books featuring Chan became so popular that the character made the leap to radio, movies and television. Over the years, 13 actors have portrayed the detective, but not one of them has been of Chinese ancestry.

• The tradition of Girl Scout cookies dates back to 1917, just five years after Juliette Gordon Low founded the organiza-tion. A scout troop in Muskogee, Oklahoma,

baked cookies and held a sale in their high school cafeteria as part of a service project. It was an instant success. Over the next two decades, Girl Scouts across America held sales of cookies baked by their own troops, packaging them in wax paper, and selling door-to-door for 35 cents per dozen

• During the Great Depression, Girl Scouts could be found making quilts, gathering food and cloth-ing for the poor, and volunteering in hospitals. Dur-ing World War II, they planted Victory Gardens.

• From the original group of 18 girls in Savannah,Georgia, the Girl Scout organization has grown to 3.9 million members worldwide today, with more than 59 million American women as alumnae. In 1953, the Girl Scouts organization purchased Juliette Gordon Low’s Savannah birthplace and opened it as a mu-seum and program center for girls.
