EDITORIAL

From the Editor

Greetings Groote, I am continually surprised and impressed by our Groote community. Carols by Candlelight was delightful and showcased some amazing talent and then the Children’s Christmas party reinforced again what dedicated and generous members of the community we have here on the rock. A huge thank you to all those involved in both events. Please note that the next Echo deadline is the third of January 2011. I look forward to hearing from you all in the New Year. I apologise for the fact that the tidal information for January is not included, it did not arrive in time for the print deadline. I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a safe and prosperous new year. Happy holidays!

Till next Edition,

Taryn Rose ~ Editor

NEXT DEADLINE: VOL 16 NO 1—FIRST ISSUE OF 2011

The closing time for contributions is: Monday 3 January 2011

Garbage Collection We’ve been asked by the garbage collectors to remind everyone that they will only collect the contents of one (1) Wheely Bin per property. They will not empty a second bin, nor will they collect any other items that are left alongside the bin. Any items that cannot fit into the single bin will need to be taken to the tip by the tenant. Outstanding Maintenance We are continuing our maintenance audits with Doucon to ascertain the progress of all outstanding work orders. We are still dealing with carry over work from the previous contractors and it would greatly assist us if tenants could let us know of maintenance issues that have been reported to us that have not yet been addressed. There is a considerable backlog of works that are being addressed as contractor resources come on line. The Township Team of GEMCO, LJ Hooker, Doucon & ESS GEBIE, are dedicated and committed to providing high standards of service to all of our tenants. We thank you for your patience and understanding and encourage you not to hesitate to contact us if you have any concerns or issues that you would like to discuss. Reminder - Cyclone Preparations! GEMCO have requested that we issue another reminder to all residents about the requirement for tenants to conduct pre-cyclone clean ups around their homes. The main cause of damage and injury during cyclonic winds is from loose objects being blown by the wind. All tenants have an obligation to assist in reducing the risk. Our sincere thanks to the many tenants who have already addressed these issues. Don’t forget to make sure your cyclone shelter has nothing stored in it and is clean and ready for use. Insurance – Are You Covered? As the Tenant, you are responsible for the insurance cover for your own possessions, including furniture, be the risk fire, theft, storm, tempest etc. It’s also important that your policy covers damage caused by Cyclones. It is recommended that tenants, especially those with swimming pools and dogs, have a Householders Personal Liability Policy as well as Contents Insurance. Your insurer can give you more advice on what is most suitable for you. House Sitters Remember, to let us know if you have a house sitter. If you don’t advise us and your house sitter locks themselves out, we will not provide them with keys to get in. Merry Xmas As this is the final edition of the Echo in 2010, the Team at LJ Hooker thank you for your help, support and understanding during 2010 and wish everyone on Eylandt a wonderful Xmas and a safe, happy and prosperous 2011.

Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor, Thanks to the GEG&SFC I would just like to thank Ryan and the Groote Eylandt Game and Sports Fishing Club for taking me Fishing. I got to see my first Black Marlin (we caught 2) and I got to catch 2 Sailfish. We also caught Tuna, Mackerel, Queen fish and Barracuda. Thanks Lincoln Petith

To the Editor:

Richard Tomlinson and I recently brought our newborn baby Henry home to Groote Eylandt.

We would like to publicly express our thanks to the CWA for providing us with a delicious ready-made meal for the evening of our return home - not only a main course, but a scrumptious dessert as well! It was a huge bonus to settle in with our new child knowing that dinner was one less thing to worry about.

We have also been overwhelmed by the generosity of friends and acquaintances in Alyangula, who have showered us with new and pre-loved baby clothing and equipment, much of which is already being put to good use. It's great to know that Henry is starting his life in such a generous and thoughtful community.

Thank you!

Yours sincerely, Katie Hoffmann

A big THANK YOU to all those wonderful people who knitted jerseys for this project. To date we have approximately 50 jerseys to go to the Orphanage in Africa. Photos will be available early next year. We will be continuing this project in the new year and would like to invite anyone who can knit, or is interested in knitting, to come and join us every second Sunday afternoon for a great couple of hours of socialising with a good cause in mind. Young Eylandters are more than welcome. Come and join the fun. ~ Jan French Venue: DC Lounge. Contact: CWA on [email protected] Jan French 8987 6917

Alyangula Playgroup Celebrates Christmas

Wednesday 17th November was a big day for Alyangula Playgroup - our annual Christmas Party 2010.

35 excited children arrived to a Christmas Wishing Tree and decorations. They listened, sang and danced to the Christmas music, played, jumped, skipped, hopped, slid and ran. On such a special occasion,

the only thing that could possibly be on the menu was party food! That big red jolly old bloke, Santa, arrived before long with gifts for the children in hand. We hope the children and adults alike had a great time at the party.

Alyangula Playgroup would like to thank Rosie and Retravision, Adam and Betapave, our members and Perkins Shipping.

Playgroup will continue to meet Wednesdays, 9.30am at the ASEC Hall as usual throughout the holiday season.

Alyangula Playgroup wishes you all a wonderfully special Christmas and a fun, exciting New Year.

Belinda Brooks recently competed in the Cozuman Ironman competition in Mexico and finished third in her age group and 15th overall.

This is an amazing achievement as she had to complete against 2300 athletes from all over the world. The triathlon consisted of a 2.4 mile sea swim, 112 mile bike ride and a 26.2 mile run. Belinda took 52:23 to do the swim, 5:26:59 for the bike ride and 3:47:22 for the run. In total she raced for 10 hours 11 minutes and 50 seconds.

Congratulations Belinda!

2010 marks two years of successful collaboration between AFLNT and the people of Groote Eylandt. Football continues to be embraced with much enthusiasm and the positive outcomes are being felt throughout the wider communities of Groote Eylandt. Supported by AFLNT, remote communities within East Arnhem are becoming better resourced, giving many communities the opportunity to participate in football. With this support, a greater number of people engage in positive, football activity throughout the East Arnhem Region. Unfortunately, not all communities are fortunate to have a full-time AFLNT Regional Development Manager on the ground which makes Groote Eylandt a sought after destination for many traditional Yolnu people wanting to engage in a regular, structured football competition and programs. Following from the success of the Groote Eylandt football program last year, 2010 has been about cementing the foundations and structure of the program put in place during 2009, while continuing to forge relationships with community members and stakeholders. At the beginning of 2010, AFLNT and the people of Groote Eylandt set out to reinforce the message across East Arnhem, that the Eylandt is a region ‘vibrant and rich in football culture’. Angurugu School Cats Attendance Academy

The development of Football on Groote Eylandt has provided a basis for Geelong Football Club, which participates in the AFL Clubs Partnership Program, to work alongside GEMCO, the Anindilyakwa Land Council and AFLNT, and form a unique attendance-based academy. A range of game development, leadership and life skill capacity activities are being addressed, with the primary role of the School Cats Football Attendance Academy, to increase attendance at Angurugu School. Other outcomes beyond increasing attendance in 2010 have included: Supporting training, employment and leadership activities, including up skilling of

coaches and umpires Creating clear and concise pathways in junior football Contributing to education improvements improving behaviour of students in class.

Improving attention and retention levels playing an integral part in improving better health and well being. Priding itself on being a gender neutral academy, which encourages cooperation and interaction between both male and female participants Students of the Academy have been instrumental in participating regularly in the recently formed AFL Junior Competition facilitating cultural exchange and learning between the Geelong Cats FC and Angurugu School Groote Eylandt Junior makes All-Indigenous Australian-Under 15 Flying Boomerangs side The Kickstart Country Championships were

held in Darwin at the beginning of June this year, with two under 15 Groote Eylandt students chosen to participate. Both hailing from Umbakumba Community, Shannon Jaragba and Jethro Marawili continue to catch the eye of the Regional Development Manager (RDM) and have subsequently been involved with many of the representative and development trips organised by the AFLNT, Geelong Cats, and School Sport NT. Shannon Jaragba in particular, has been a stand out performer, both in his junior and senior football. His portfolio of achievements has grown rapidly since becoming recognised at last year’s 2009 Kickstart Country Championship where he gained selection in the 2009 NT dream team. After narrowly missing out on the AFL Kickstart camp in Melbourne last year, Shannon rose to the challenge and took it onboard to play some better football at this year’s 2010 Kickstart Championships. Following this event, Shannon was selected to participate in the Kickstart Camp in Sydney which he attended and performed exceptionally well at. During the camp in Sydney, Shannon demonstrated some strong leadership skills amongst his peers plus exceptional football attributes which led to his selection in the Under 15’s Flying Boomerangs side, which will be travelling to Tonga this December. Shannon was only one of two Indigenous youth to become selected from the Northern Territory. Robert Clements – AFLNT Regional Development Manager for Groote Eylandt

For the first time, three students from Umbakumba Campus completed their senior secondary studies on Eylandt. Hannah Mamarika, Elsa Mamarika and Andrea Wanambi attended an awards ceremony in Darwin where they received their Northern Territory Certificate of Education along with 38 other students. Principal Adrian Conroy acknowledged the dedication, commitment and leadership of past and present teachers and assistant teachers, in particular Peter Cusbert (Senior Secondary Teacher), Brandon Bull (Middle Years Teacher) and Jo Skelton from the Polly Farmer Foundation who have encouraged the girls and worked nights and weekends with them to ensure success. “It shows what high attendance and hard work can lead to,” said Adrian. The students studied a range of subjects including Stage 1 & 2 English as a Second Language; Contemporary Issues and Science; Maths; Integrated Learning; Jewelry Making; and VET studies in

Hospitality and Rural Operations. A big thank you must go to the Northern Territory Open Education Centre for their role in the girl’s success. The girls were supported by their families and by Tony Wurramarrba, Chairman of the Anindilyakwa Land Council (ALC). The ALC have a strong focus on youth leadership for the Eylandt. The Honorable Malarndirri McCarthy, Local Member for Arnhem and College Director Mark Monaghan agreed that they were thrilled that Groote Eylandt College had the capacity to offer negotiated pathways from preschool through to Year 12, on Eylandt. At Umbakumba Campus and community we are all proud to see the success of these young role models. We look forward to seeing what path of future education, training or

employment they choose to walk down.

Umbakumba and Angurugu Campuses are celebrating the success of 5 Indigenous graduates in the Certificate 111 in Indigenous Education Work run by Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education (BIITE). Alexander Mamarika, Lazarus Mamarika, Merrilyn Bara, Ethel Mamarika (Umbakumba) and Leeanne Wurramarrba (Angurugu) will graduate in early 2011. The aim of the course is to ensure that Assistant Teachers have the skills and confidence to work together with teachers to support literacy and numeracy teaching and small group work. They also learn how to use technology and play a role in increasing attendance at the campuses. The course is the beginning of the pathway to accredited teacher training. The importance of Growing our Own and community capacity building is embedded in the course. The graduates have shown great dedication over the last 2 years and Principals Kristie Lloyd and Adrian Conroy acknowledge their hard work and the role that BIITE lecturers and tutors have played to ensure success. College Director Mark Monaghan said “it is huge success and fantastic to see NT DET staff succeeding in further education and training; and providing a strong presence in our campuses as positive role models for the students” Congratulations and well done to the new graduates. Campus and community are very proud.

The class of Year two/four have had a solid learning semester, as we spent most of our time in the classroom. Nevertheless, we did enjoy wonderful opportunities to engage with visitors, such as, the Lions Footy Team, the fair folks of Bells Shakespeare and the Science Fair crew, all of whom brought their unique magic. We also found time to visit Six Mile Beach, with its beautiful expanse of sand and refreshing little waterfall. Building sandcastles, fishing, a spot of swimming and making damper was the order of the day. This was followed by resting, chatting and eating under the welcome shade of the Banyan tree. We are now learning the Aussie Jingle Bells Christmas carol to sing for parents on our Open Day and we look forward to showing off some of the great work we have done throughout the year.

The class of Year 2/4 wish everyone a safe and happy festive season.

~ Year 2/4 Class and Veronique Exelby

I would like to make special mention of one of our students, whom we are very proud of and envision a promising future for. Nakeisha Mununggurr is a year 3 student (9 years old); who has come ahead in tremendous strides in her reading. Recently, she took the Torch reading test for this year and was found to be reading at the level of a Year 8 student!

This is remarkable growth and is mostly due to her self-motivation and love of reading.

Well done Nakeisha! ~Submitted by Veronique Exelby

Swimmers from Alyangula, Angurugu, Umbakumba and Milyakbura recently competed in the Groote Eylandt Regional Swimming and Athletics Carnival. A wonderful day was had by all and the swimmers showed great skill and determination. Spectators were treated to some exceptional performances by numerous swimmers from all schools; the boat races proved a firm favourite. Alyangula were ultimately victorious in a close run event

GERSA Swimming Carnival

Throughout 2010 Ryan Assan has excelled in all of the sporting activities he has been involved in. The pinnacle of his achievements was his recent performance at the Australian All Schools Athletics meet in Melbourne. Ryan ran in the under 14, 800m event and produced a time of 2 minutes and 6 seconds. This was fast enough to put Ryan in fourth place, making him the fourth fastest runner in Australia for his age group in the 800 metres. As a result Ryan will be travelling to Sydney early next year to compete in the Australian Athletics meet. This event will include school-aged students as well as older participants who use this event as a stepping stone for the Olympics. This is an outstanding achievement for a student from Alyangula and proves that, through determination and commitment, we can reach the stars. We would like to take this opportunity to congratulate Ryan on his exceptional achievements and wish him all the best for his event in Sydney. We would also like to acknowledge and thank the ALC and ESS Gebie for their support; which allowed Ryan to travel to Melbourne.

Transition “Cleans up Alyangula” On Thursday 25th November, the Alyangula Area School Transition class helped to “Clean up Alyangula” by collecting rubbish along the walking track/bike path near the front beach. Each student wore a rubber glove while they picked up all of the plastic bottles, drink cans, food wrappers and plastic shopping bags that were littering the path and grassed areas. Together, the Transition students filled 3 garbage bags with rubbish and helped make Alyangula more beautiful. The enthusiasm shown by these young students was inspirational. They did a wonderful job and should be very proud of themselves. They made me proud. Thank you to Carol Primrose, Deb Grove and Charli for coming with us and assisting with supervision. Without you, this would not have been possible.

Preschool Water Fun Day Last Thursday, children from Angurugu and Alyangula Preschools came together and celebrated their preschool year with a Water Fun Day. Children were invited to participate in water activities such as the slip ‘ n ‘ slide, fishing, Gellibaf play, water painting and lots more. It was fantastic to see children mingle and have so much fun together.

Dough for the Needy Last week Alyangula’s Transition/Year 1 class and Mrs Donohue sold biscuits that we made to our class visitors who came in to see our work. We asked for $2 a packet. The money that we raised was given to a community that we think needs our help. We have learned that there are people in this world who are very poor and don’t have much food. They probably won’t get any Christmas pre-sents like we will. We know that we are very lucky to have what we have. Christmas is about giving and we would like to give them the money we raised. We raised $153.40. Thankyou for helping us to help these people.

A Total of $2935 for Movember Australia

The first Men’s Golf Day proved to be successful with a total of $1995 being raised on the day and total of $2935 at 5/12/10.

Scott Perkins unfortunately missed the day but raised $740 of the total himself, well done Scott!

Despite the heat on the day we still had a good crowd and it was great to see the sea of blue over the golf course. I’m sure the men enjoyed the day and the night.

COMMUNITY

Ayangula Daycare has had a busy year. This culminated in a lovely Christmas Tree decorating morning on December first. After a treat-filled morning tea downstairs; the parents joined the children in making Christmas decorations and decorating the tree. We finished with a fun Christmas-inspired sing a long and portfolios of the children’s work being given to the parents. We recently found out that the fire men on Eylandt are creating a calendar that will be released soon with all profits coming towards the Daycare. We thank Tracy Rogers and all the fire crews for their generosity and eagerly look forward to seeing some cheeky photos!

The Daycare Cookbook ‘Eylandt Edibles’ is coming together well and will be available for sale early next year. Please watch this space for an exciting and beautiful cookbook coming your way! Just a reminder that Daycare will be closed for renovations from the 13th December and will return on Monday 23rd January 2011. Looking forward to seeing you all in January – Merry Christmas from Staff and Parent Committee of Alyangula Daycare.
