Message from Chairman
Dear Members,
Season’s Greetings
Students will be excited to take up engineering courses at various engineering colleges.
I am sure the rat race would lead the students somewhere. While every parent wants
his/her son/daughter to become an engineer or doctor, let us look at the alternates
available. There are areas such as bio technology, agriculture, finance and accounting,
architecture, tourism, hotel management, shipping related, fashion related, pharmacy,
journalism, horticulture, mass communication etc. to name a few.
Let me touch upon some of them to give an impetus for students to think. While agriculture in the country has
grown leaps and bounds, we are faced with pesticides residues which are chemically toxic for humans. Effects
of many of these on long term basis on humans are not studied. Organic farming is an emerging area which is
coming up. Usage of bio fertilizers which can be generated from bio waste is an area which has lot of potential.
Similarly use of bio pesticides which are harmless to humans is another area of interest. Studying in general on
agriculture and specialising in these areas will be beneficial in the long run.
Another area is marine or shipping. There are two different branches in shipping. One is the engineering one
where in engineers are employed to take care of the various machineries on board. They start from 5th
engineer
to 4th, 3
rd, 2
nd and the Chief engineer. However these require engineering qualifications and hence are not the
topic of our discussion. The other branch takes care of the ship management basically. As we all know, the
Captain or “Master” as he is called is the real head of everything in a ship. He is all powerful on board. Below
him is the chief officer, who takes care of the loading of cargo, other operations etc. further down are 2nd
officer, 3rd
. officer etc. In order to become a Captain, one has to take up marine related courses, being taught
by Indian Maritime University (IMU) and many private institutions. It is however expensive though. Those
passing out join as cadets initially and they have to pass qualifying exams during their career to get higher
positions and finally become Captain. This is one of the maximum paying jobs and a responsible one too.
Family life will be affected as sailing will be continuously for many months before returning home. However,
seniors can take their spouse and children too in the ship.
I am sure one can identify many such areas and not go after the rat race of engineering and medicine alone. I
wish all aspiring students and parents to ponder on the job prospects and the future before taking up
engineering courses.
IEEE is contemplating to assist sends to make them employable after their graduation through specific
programs. We will be announcing these in due course.
Wish you all the best
Till next time,
Yours voluntarily

Message from the Editors
H.R. Mohan
Chief Editor
[email protected]
Dear Readers,
Welcome to the 4th issue of IEEE MAS LINK for the year 2016. Most colleges and universities are into
examinations and/or vacation mode. Understandably, there is a dip in professional activities. Nonetheless, SBs
and SB members can use this hiatus to embark on gainful internships and projects of societal and humanitarian
relevance true to the IEEE vision of leveraging technology for humanity.
This month issue of MAS LINK features activity reports from 11 SBs and seven Society Chapters. The reach
and visibility of the MAS LINK is tremendous and we request all SBCs to make use this of avenue and voice
of the Madras Section. Reporting in LINK is incentivized with rebates, grants, incentives and awards from the
Madras section and therefore we request that all SBs to report their activities and achievements.
In order to release the newsletter by middle of the month, we are continuing with the practice of not
considering events reported after 8th
. All SBCs are requested to make a note and submit the reports as per the
guidelines available at http://ieeecs-madras.managedbiz.com/link-web/report-to-maslink-submission-
guidelines.pdf
This issue has exciting snippets on solar thermal plant (contributed by a student member) in addition to
our popular ready-reckoner, Information Resources. Also, you may find three inspiring stories.
In the Announcements section, there are exciting opportunities listed such as IEEE in 2030
Challenge, Foundation Grants, free e-books, medical insurance and entrepreneurship mentoring.
The forthcoming events section has information on much-awaited and sought-after events such as TENCON,
INDICON. ADCOM, Women in STEM etc.
In this issue, we highlight the various technology initiatives and projects led by SIGHT to support the fishing
community in Tamil Nadu. These activities of the IEEE Madras Section find resonance with the vision of our
Honorable IEEE President, Barry Shoop for IEEE to focus on humanitarian work and "provide technologies
that people can understand and maintain by themselves". One example of this is IEEE Smart Village, in which
IEEE members are training local entrepreneurs in Cameroon, Nigeria, and Sudan to set up micro-utilities using
solar panels to power homes, businesses, and schools.
We congratulate the winners of the MAS LINK READER QUIZ-1605 Mr. Arun Srivastava, Professional
Member, Leeyo, Sivakasi and Dr. S. Sakthivel, Professional Member, Anna University, Chennai. Both will
get Amazon Gift Coupon of value Rs. 500/- each. The prizes are sponsored by IEEE Communications Society
Madras Chapter. As the response for the MAS LINK READERS QUIZ is dwindling, we regret to inform that
this item is being discontinued from this issue.
We look forward contributions from our members to make MAS LINK more informative and appealing. To
access past issues of MAS LINK, pl. visit http://ieeecs-madras.managedbiz.com/link-web/index.html

CC CAM Monitoring System - The Boat Mojanam
CC CAM Monitoring system is being introduced for fishing
boats by IEEE ADSF SIGHT. This project is being done by
a team from Aishwarya College of Engineering and
Technology (ACET). This system helps to avoid unexpected
accidents like boat to boat collision or boat to ships collision
especially at night time. With this system, the skipper can
monitor the inside activities and what is happening around
the boat. A college team from ACET led by Mr. A.K. Mano
visited Thoothoor and Muttom on 14th
April 2016 to
understand the real problems and learn more about the
various dimensions of the boat.
Students installed the system in the boat ‘mojanam’ and
conducted the test run on 13th
may 2016 in the presence of Dr. M.A. Atmanand, Chair, IEEE Madras Section at
Jeppiaar fishing harbour, Muttom. It is the first time in India, that a fishing boat has a CC cam. Presently, two
Page 13
IEEE MAS LINK Vol. 13 No.5 Jun 2016 Page 13
cameras have been fixed in front and back of the boat and in the later phase two more such cameras maybe fixed in
both sides of the boat. Dr. Atmanand advised the team that having CC cam system in a fishing boat is a good idea
but it requires extra care in the selection of products. Good quality cams are expensive and affordability by
fishermen, sea worthiness etc should also be considered. The owner of the boat is Mr.Xavier of Eraviputhenthurai.
Biometric Card Project
The project involves fixing a biometric reader for thumb print in the
boat to know the actual crew members, who go for fishing.. The boat
owner who is at home will get an SMS in his mobile phone on the
details of the crew members who are in the boat. The project team had
a discussion with Mr. John Milton on 18th
March 2016 and learn more
about the operation of the biometric system. He gave a demonstration
on handling of biometric reader, feed information, collection of

Using CO2 To Generate Electricity
Solar power is a great source of renewable energy, but as with many things in life, timing is everything. The sun
doesn’t shine on long winter nights when people turn on their lights. On the other hand, a sunny Sunday afternoon
can produce an ample electricity surplus that’s difficult to store.
“That’s the grand challenge,” says Stephen Sanborn, senior engineer and principal investigator at GE Global
Research (GRC). “We need to make renewable energy available to the grid when it is needed.”
Sanborn and his team decided to solve this problem by storing some of the heat generated by thermal solar power
plants in carbon dioxide. These power plants concentrate solar rays with vast fields of mirrors and use the heat to
generate steam that spins a turbine. The carbon dioxide effectively works like a battery that can quickly release
energy during peak demand. http://goo.gl/RPb00x
Sand Batteries For Solar Energy Storage The Masdar Institute of Science and Technology, an independent, research-driven graduate-level university focused
on advanced energy and sustainable technologies, announced that its researchers have successfully demonstrated
that desert sand from the UAE could be used in concentrated solar power (CSP) facilities to store thermal energy up
to 1000°C. https://goo.gl/qnpfzL
'Hydricity' concept uses solar energy to produce power round-the-clock
Hydricity uses solar concentrators to focus sunlight, producing high temperatures and super heating water to operate
a series of electricity-generating steam turbines and reactors for splitting water into hydrogen and oxygen. The
hydrogen would be stored for use overnight to superheat water and run the steam turbines, or it could be used for
other applications, producing zero greenhouse-gas emissions. http://goo.gl/vw0sQx
New solar cell turns raindrops into electricity Researchers from two Chinese universities have developed a solar cell that can produce electricity from light and
water, enabling a solar panel that works in the sun or rain. The scientists from Ocean University of China in
Qingdao and Yunnan Normal University in Kunming developed a highly efficient and flexible dye-sensitized solar
cell and then coated that cell with a one atom-thick layer of electron-enriched graphene. http://goo.gl/7rEIxC

“Locky” ransomware – what you need to know: “Locky” feels like quite a cheery-sounding name. But it’s also
the nickname of a new strain of ransomware, so-called because it renames all your important files so that they have
the extension .locky. Of course, it doesn’t just rename your files, it scrambles them first, and – as you probably
know about ransomware – only the crooks have the decryption key. You can buy the decryption key from the crooks
via the so-called dark web. The prices we’ve seen vary from BTC 0.5 to BTC 1.00 (BTC is short for “bitcoin,”
where one bitcoin is currently worth about $400/£280). https://goo.gl/CCVAqf

Virtually all of the company’s data was stolen in the hack, including records that suggest most female accounts on
the site are fake, and that the company used female chat bots to trick men into spending money.

Inspiring Stories
CRISIS MANAGEMENT: Three Fish in a Pond
Once there lived three fish in a pond. The name of the first fish was “Plan Ahead”, the name of the second fish
“Think Fast”, and the name of the third fish “Wait and See”.
One day they heard two men saying that they were going fishing in their pond the next day. They also mentioned
something about casting a net.
“Plan Ahead” said, “I’m swimming down the river tonight!” and so he did.
“Think Fast” said, “I’m sure I will think of a plan on the right moment.”
“Wait and See” lazily said, “I can’t think about this problem now, I’ll think about it tomorrow!”
The next day the two fishermen came and cast their nets. “Plan ahead”, the first fish, was not in the pond. But the
other two fish were caught in the net!
“Think Fast” quickly rolled his belly up and did not move, pretending to be dead. “Oh, this fish is no good!” said
the man, and threw him back into the pond. But, the third fish “Wait and See” ended up in the fish market.
Because, “In times of uncertainty or danger, when the net is cast, plan ahead or plan to think fast!”
DECISION MAKING: Two Pebbles
In a small village, a farmer owed a lot of money to a moneylender. The moneylender offered him a deal. He would
erase the farmer’s debt if the farmer gave him his daughter to marry. The farmer was not happy about this deal, so
he refused.
The moneylender then offered another deal. He would put into a small bag a black and a white pebble. The girl
would pick one from the bag. If she picked the white one, she would marry the moneylender. If she picked the black
one, she would not marry him, but the moneylender would erase the debt. But, if his daughter refused to pick a
pebble, the moneylender would send the farmer to jail.
Then, the moneylender picked two pebbles up from the ground. The girl noticed that he cheated, as both pebbles
were black. The old man asked her to pick.
She drew out a pebble. Without looking at it, she fumbled and let it fall on the ground among the other pebbles. "Oh,
I am so clumsy, I am sorry" she said, "never mind though! You can tell which pebble I picked by looking into the
bag.”
This is a very successful example of combining fast decision making and creative thinking for solving problems!.
ATTITUDE: Bounty for Wolves
There was once a wildlife protection organization that offered a bounty of $ 3,000 for wolves captured alive.
Two friends, John and Jim, decided to make their fortune. So they scoured the mountain and the forest day and
night, looking for wolves. One night, as they were exhausted, they fell asleep.
Suddenly, John woke up by the sound of growls and saw that they were surrounded by a pack of nearly 20 wolves
with scary black eyes, and bared teeth. From their throats, low growls rumbled.
He slowly reached over and woke Jim and said, “Jim, wake up! I think we are rich!”

services to improve people’s lives and make the entire city run more smoothly. But the data our cities collect
nowadays is more massive and varied, and is accessed at higher speeds than ever before. This is Big Data. New
technologies are constantly being developed to better manage Big Data. This computer science course, from the
IEEE Smart Cities initiative and the University of Trento, helps students understand and use these new technologies
to help improve a city. In this self-paced, introductory-level course, you will learn:
The fundamental concepts of Big Data and how it changes traditional data management approaches
Applications of Big Data to different sectors of a modern city, and how it can improve the life of its citizens
