Microweb of things Open Platform for customized Events

V.P.Sampath, Ram Innovation Labs, Chennai

Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) have been widely used in both military and commercial

use. The challenge to WSNs implementation is source location privacy. The Web of

Things(WoT) is the connection between diverse smart devices and objects such as Wireless

Sensor Networks, Ambient devices, household appliances, RFID tagged objects, etc.Unlike

existing Internet of Things-based systems, the Web of Things reuse the web standards to connect

embedded devices and smart objects easily. Well-known standards such as URI, HTTP, REST,

Atom, etc are used to access the functionality of the smart objects based on web.The WoT-based

platform is to provide solution to support diversity of technologies. The platforms should

implement variety of protocols to support technologies. Standardization and harmonization of

communications exists between sensor and actuator technologies.Hence, a WoT-base platform

implement a common solution that satisfies particular requirements of context data

consumption.µWoTOP is a system built on enabling easy integration of sensing and processing

modules .Gateways can run on infrastructure devices or smart phones or tablets enabled as

gateways. The design of the micro Web of Things Open Platform (µWoTOP) is based on an

open platform that was initially specified for PCs or servers. Every Smart Gateway implement

the IP/TCP protocol stack by default and specific protocols which supports embedded devices

plugged directly to the Smart Gateway. Smart Gateways offer a mechanism that facilitates the

interaction of smart things each other, as well as among smart things and external entities, by

means of well-defined interfaces. The API defined is to access the resources which will be

completely public according to the “open” nature of the µWoTOP, i.e., HTTP methods, URIs,

format of messages and responses will be well documented and accessible for everybody with an

Internet connection. The Common Alert Protocol (CAP) for the definition of emergency

notifications is related to health events.

An ARM Cortex-A9 core duo 1.2 GHz and 16 Gb is connected to a private Wireless Local Area

Network (WLAN) at 100 Mbps. A µWoTOP instantiation runs in a background process. Every

generator produces 0.5 event/s that are sent to the Smart Gateway. Event consumers are software

components simulating agents that subscribe to events dispatched by the generators. These are

defined as outgoing events. They physically run on different user devices (connected to the same

WLAN, and they are subscribed to the events generated depending on the type of agent to be

simulated by the event generator: health monitoring, notification or ambient. The idea is to

include a mechanism to automatically retransmit data when they are lost or an inconsistency is

detected. Additionally, we will perform more evaluations in which more than one .Smart

Gateway are involved in order to design mechanisms to balance automatically the workload. The

objective will be to guarantee good Quality of Service levels automatically according to the

scalability requirements of the smart space at different points in its life-cycle.

the economy on the rebound, we need more entrepreneurs to satisfy new demands and solve new

problems. It is time for more engineers to take the first big step. He advised the young

professionals aspiring to be entrepreneur to put the customer at the centre of their business

concept. Leverage their domain expertise and create a customer experience never realized before

in the industry. Couple this with automation and technology to offer a disruptive solution.Mr.

Mohankumar Swaminathan, Managing Director, Tinywall advised the engineering students to

organize and attend the national level symposia, seminars and workshops in

colleges/universities, involve in freelancing works and to create identity. He encouraged the

young professional to stop worrying someone will steal their idea but worry about how to get

customers, a team & funding. He insisted that “If one cannot do great things, do small things in a

great way”.At the end of the event Mr. Jebastin, Managing Director of Lovely Leafs, Sivakasi

threw light on the various Indian start-ups like Myntra and Zovi in an effort to set off the young
