Better half, soulmate, significant other - no matter how you say it, it’s all about being a couple. Tidbits has the acts on some famous

couples both real and imaginary. • In March of 1952, Joltin’ Joe DiMaggio determined that he would like to meet Marilyn Monroe and within days, they had their first date. Due to his spectacular achievements with the New York Yankees, DiMaggio was much more of a celebrity at the time than the beautiful movie star. The two were married in a San Francisco civil ceremony in January, 1954, and just nine months later, were in divorce court. Raised in a strict traditional home, DiMaggio strongly disliked Marilyn’s film career, believing she should be a housewife caring for his home, and asked her to give up her career. For 20 years after her death at age 36, Joe had roses delivered to her grave twice a week.

• Virginia McMath and Frederick Austerlitz made ten films together during the 1930s, a dance duo better known as Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire. Prior to their first film, 1933’s Flyin’ Down to Rio, Rogers had never before danced with a partner. By 1936, the pair were top box office stars. From 1933 to 1949, the famous dancers made a total of 10 movies.

FAMOUS COUPLES (continued):• The love story of Cherilyn Sarkisian and

Salvatore Bono began in 1962 in a Los Angeles coffee shop. She was 16 and he was 27. Bono, who worked for a record producer at Hollywood’s Gold Star Studios helped get Cher a gig as a backup singer on some of the studio’s classic recordings, including The Righteous Brothers’ hit “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling.” By late 1964, the pair were married and performing together, calling themselves Caesar and Cleo, releasing a single “Do You Wanna Dance?” Early the following year, they switched their name to Sonny and Cher. Their signature hit “I Got You, Babe” was released in 1965. Their third album, in 1967, featured Sonny’s composition “The Beat Goes On,” another Sonny and Cher trademark. In 1971, they were offered a summer television series, The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour. The show was such a hit, the couple was offered a regular prime time program later that year, and it quickly soared to the network’s Top Ten. The program continued for four seasons, garnering 15 Emmy Award nominations. Unfortunately, by the third season, the marriage was unraveling, and although they separated that year, the show went on. A nasty divorce was finalized in 1975. Yet nothing seemed to hold the couple back, as they reunited in 1976 for The Sonny and Cher Show. Poor ratings resulted in its cancellation the following year. Cher went on to a successful solo singing and acting career, while Sonny was elected mayor of Palm Springs, California, for a term, followed by his election to the U.S. House of Representatives. While serving in that position, he was killed in a Lake Tahoe skiing accident, when he struck a tree. It seems only fitting that his tombstone’s epitaph reads, “And the beat goes on.”

I'm not clear what you mean by "a few cells of this kind." If the cells obtained on a smear show low-grade changes, a woman's chances of having cervical cancer are close to zero. Follow-up smears are the only treatment needed. If the cells show high-grade changes, the doctor will perform a colposcopy. Colpos-copy is an examination of the cervix with an instrument that has a magnifying lens so suspi-cious areas can be readily seen and biopsied. Results determine what the next steps should be. However, at these stages -- long before the cancer has spread -- it is still quite curable.Your daughter can trust her doctor to take the appropriate steps depending on the results of her Pap test. Vanilla-Pecan Ice Cream Torte

1 cup pecan halves, toasted and cooled20 gingersnap cookies2 tablespoons sugar3 tablespoons margarine, melted, substitute butter3 pints vanilla ice cream2 tablespoons pumpkin-pie spice1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1. Preheat oven to 375 F. Reserve 16 pecan halves for garnish. In a food processor with knife blade attached, blend remaining pecan halves with gingersnaps and sugar until mixture is finely ground.2. In 9-inch springform pan, stir cookie mixture and melted margarine or butter, with a fork, until moistened. With hand, press mixture onto bottom of pan.3. Bake crust 8 minutes. Cool completely on wire rack.4. Let ice cream soften on counter 20 minutes. In large bowl, mix softened ice cream vanilla extract & pumpkin-pie spice until blended; spread over crust. Place pecan halves around top edge of torte. Cover torte and freeze at least overnight or up to 1 week.5. To serve, let frozen torte stand at room temperature about 15 minutes for easier slicing. Remove side of springform pan. Serves 16.

DEAR DR. DONOHUE: Will you please say a few words about the prognosis and treat-ment of cervical cancer? My daughter, 45, was told at a recent checkup that she has a few cells of this kind, and she is reacting as if she has received a death sentence. Since it was caught early, should her outlook be more cheerful? -- J.B.

ANSWER: All women are indebted to Dr. George Papanicolaou, who developed the Pap smear for the early detection of cervical cancer. The cervix, by the way, is the necklike projection of the uterus into the vagina. It was the site for the most common cause of cancer death in women before the Pap smear came into wide use. That was in the early 1940s. Since then, deaths from cervical cancer have been cut in half, with about 4,200 deaths occurring annually and 12,200 new cases detected each year. Most of the deaths are in women who did not have Pap smear testing.

• Have stubborn stains in the toilet? Put some teeth in your cleaning job by dropping in a denture clean-ing tablet and letting it sit overnight. In the morning, scrub and flush. It just might do the job.

• “Lighten blemishes on your skin with lemon juice. Just dab on several times per day.” -O.M. in Georgia

• “Collect small bits of soap into a jar or cup. When you have several, add a tablespoon or two of water to soften the soap pieces.When they are moderately soft, pour out the contents on to a washcloth, fold it over and press into a bar shape with your hands. • On June 27, 1976, a factory storekeeper in Sudan becomes ill and dies 5 days later, marking the beginning of the 1st Ebola virus epidemic. • You might not recognize the name “American Gothic,” but you’ve probably seen the image. It’s a 1930 oil painting of a farmer holding a pitchfork, standing alongside a woman in her apron in front of a farmhouse. Painter Grant Wood enlisted his sister Nan to model, while Wood’s dentist, Dr. Byron McKeeby posed next to her. Although some folks think they represent husband and wife, Wood intended the couple as a father and his spinster daughter. While driving through Eldon, Iowa, Wood happened to see a little wood farmhouse called the Dibble House, and had a vision of the couple standing in front of it. The couple he painted were, in Wood’s words, “the kind of people I fancied should live in that house.”

• Olive Oyl was around long before her boyfriend Popeye. Olive first appeared in 1919 as a main character in the comic strip Thimble Theatre, a tall, extremely thin girl with her hair pulled into a bun. Popeye wasn’t introduced to the strip until nearly 10 years later, but immediately became so popular, the comic was renamed Popeye. Olive Oyl’s brother was Castor Oyl, her father was Cole Oyl, and her sister-in-law, Cylinda Oyl. Olive appeared in nearly 25,000 comic strips. Popeye’s first animated cartoons appeared in 1933. In 1937, he was so popular that the community of Crystal City, Texas, the self-proclaimed Spinach Capital of the World, erected a statue of Popeye in front of City Hall to honor the character who had turned spinach into a very popular food. Popeye proved himself a good boyfriend over and over when he rescued Olive from the clutches of his archrival Bluto.

• Twenty-five-year-old Elvis Presley was stationed in Germany in 1959, when he met the 14-year-old daughter of an Air Force officer at a party. Elvis and Priscilla Beaulieu had an eight-year courtship before finally marrying in 1967 in an eight-minute ceremony at Las Vegas’ Aladdin Hotel. He was 32, she was 21. Priscilla’s engagement ring was a 3.5-carat diamond surrounded by a row of smaller diamonds. The couple separated in 1972 and divorced in 1973. Ironically, their courtship lasted longer than the marriage.

Trees Offer Surprising Year Round Insulation

Q: An acquaintance told me recently that I could plant a tree on the west side of my house to

keep my summer cooling bills down. Well, I live in a colder northern state, and it just doesn’t make sense to plant a tree that would block the sun in the winter. My friend disagreed. What is your recommendation? –Susie in Madison, Wisconsin

A: The great thing about trees is that they have the ability to both keep your house cool in summer and warmer in winter. In Minnesota, a state study found that strategically placed shade trees can reduce air conditioning bills by nearly 25%, and a windbreak can reduce annual fuel bills by up to 20%.

How does it work? It all depends on where you place the trees. In the northern hemisphere, winter winds generally blow in from the north or northwest. (In the Northeast, we also tend to get those wonderful winter nor’easters, but that’s another story.) Those cold winds can make it harder to heat your home as they drive in through vents or leaky windows or door frames.

Plant a couple of trees on the side of your house from which these prevail-ing winter winds blow (the northwest side or corner, most likely), and they’ll act as a windbreak. Even deciduous trees that lose their leaves in the winter can provide adequate protection.

To get the best protection from winds while allowing more winter sunlight to reach your home, choose trees that will grow higher than your home’s roof eaves, with sturdy trunks and good branching. The deciduous trees will lose their leaves in winter so that the sunlight can filter in, while evergreens (like pines and firs) offer a green view year round. You might even want to mix these two types of trees. Plant protective trees 1 to 2 tree lengths (based on the average height to which the saplings eventually will grow) from the house, but no farther.

• You might not recognize the name “American Gothic,” but you’ve probably seen the image. It’s a 1930 oil painting of a farmer holding a pitchfork, standing alongside a woman in her apron in front of a farmhouse. Painter Grant Wood enlisted his sister Nan to model, while Wood’s dentist, Dr. Byron McKeeby posed next to her. Although some folks think they represent husband and wife, Wood intended the couple as a father and his spinster daughter. While driving through Eldon, Iowa, Wood happened to see a little wood farmhouse called the Dibble House, and had a vision of the couple standing in front of it. The couple he painted were, in Wood’s words, “the kind of people I fancied should live in that house.”

DEAR PAW'S CORNER: I read with inter-est your column about the poor dog that was tormented by allergies. Several years ago I adopted a wonderful Border Collie, "Maisie," from a couple who couldn't cope with her constant allergies. Blood tests showed she was allergic to tree pollens, weeds and grasses. It broke my heart to see her suffer, and I took her to many veterinarians. She received allergy shots for more than a year, and many times she was given prednisone, which I didn't like but hoped would help her. One day a new veterinarian recommend-ed a doctor of Chinese medicine nearby. I brought Maisie in and was told almost im-mediately, "Yes! I can help her. We need to build her immune system." Within a very short time she was 100 percent bet-ter. She lived happily until she was almost 17 years old.I was fortunate to find a veterinarian who was open to alternative treatments. More
