The theme of this 2007–2008 Annual Report is Voices of Independence.
Think, for a moment, about what independence means to you. There’s
job independence; financial independence; social independence; political
independence; and many more types of independence.
Then there’s living independence, or being able to fend for oneself, move
about at will, and manage your own life. This is an independence that many
of us take for granted – a right that we were born with and grew further
into as we progressed through schools, careers, partners and families.
But for some, this kind of independence is a dream yet to be realized. For
people with physical, mental or cognitive disabilities, independence is a goal
to be worked toward every day of their lives. Enter High Hopes Therapeutic
Riding. Our mission is to work with children and adults with disabilities
through supervised horseback riding and other equine related activities to
achieve a sense of independence and pride of accomplishment.
The rewards are huge, both for our participants and our dedicated staff
and volunteers who provide the tools and the environment for achieving
independence. And let’s not forget the horse, whose role is absolutely
pivotal. Our herd consists of over twenty horses, carefully selected to work
with our participants in a safe and responsive manner.
Independence for people with disabilities is seldom absolute, but is a matter
of degree. And every step toward that independence, no matter how small,
is a source of pride and achievement. We are proud of the role our staff,
our volunteers and our horses play in helping it to happen. And we thank
you, as a member of the High Hopes family, for your ongoing involvement
and support.

of the themes that continually resonates for me at
High Hopes is the concept that “it takes a village
to raise a child”. Over the past year, growing into my new role of Executive
Director, I have sometimes felt like the proverbial “child” and the “village”
of High Hopes was comprised of incredible staff, wise board members,
committed volunteers and my own supportive family. Throughout my years
here, I have seen this nurturing and development
happen time and time again at High Hopes.
Whether it be supporting a new staff member,
volunteer or participant, the spirit of helping
one achieve their potential is paramount. With
this support, each of us grows and learns on
our way to mastering needed skills and gaining
independence.
The “Voices of Independence” that we hear at
High Hopes are shouts of joy for a new skill
learned and for that deeper sense of increased self esteem and self confidence
that occurs when we succeed. This village of High Hopes contributes daily
to that journey of self fulfillment and personal development for many.
Within the pages of this Annual Report, you will see stories highlighting
participants that have taken steps toward independence.
The support of our community as demonstrated both through financial
giving and dedicated volunteerism has helped to build the village that we
know as High Hopes and through which we continue to provide invaluable
services to children and adults with disabilities. This year alone we served
over 1000 participants in our Equine Assisted Activities and Therapies with
the help of over 29,000 volunteer hours. Thank you for being a member of
graduation ceremonies have a deeper meaning for Andrew Keefe, a High Hopes
rider for the past 14 years. Andrew, whose journey began as a young child with
cerebral palsy working with a Physical Therapist and a team of highly trained
volunteers, has become a young adult cantering toward independence! Andrew’s
graduation from Stonington High School this past year marks a milestone, as does
his “graduation” if you will from High Hopes. Over the past 14 years Andrew’s
dreams have become ours. Andrew’s hopes and aspirations have been shared with
his instructors and volunteers and often his horse. Watching Andrew’s riding skills
develop and change; trotting for the first time, learning to steer, being able to
post down the long side of the arena, riding off lead in the ring and then the trail,
and finally cantering, have mirrored his journey to adulthood. Hearing of woes in
school, writing letters of recommendation for college, sharing academic projects
and celebrating the admission to college!! Andrew’s journey to independence has
been one of great joy for all of us and we have been fortunate to share in his growth
and maturity, knowing that his equine partners along the way, Doc and Poncho
to name a few, have helped! This past June at our Symphony in the Meadows
benefit concert Andrew took on another new role, spokesperson for High Hopes.
The following is a transcript of his inspiring words:
Graduation Day
Andrew
7
Good Evening. My name is Andrew Keefe and I am
19 years old. I have been riding at High Hopes for
14 years. I started riding at High Hopes as a form of
physical therapy to help with my poor trunk control,
my balance and my tight muscles.
One thing that people tend to forget is the major role
that these horses play in therapeutic riding. When I
began riding at age 4 I rode Chaussy. My mom remem-
bers how my balance problems seemed to disappear as
I sat on top of the moving horse. Over the years I have
ridden many horses including Doc, for a long period
of time and now Poncho. These horses have provided
balance and strength for me. In addition these special
animals have given me confidence in my riding skills
and in all other areas of my life.
Riding these horses every week has helped me stay
focused on tasks in school, given me balance and focus
in adaptive ski racing and has allowed me to ride inde-
pendently while on vacation with my family. With this
gained confidence I am able to stand up here and speak
to you this evening.
Typical competitive sports were difficult for me so I consider riding these horses my
competitive sport. When I am riding each week I do feel a bond with my horse. I feel
safe and know that my horse understands my movements and my direction. This
interaction I have with my horse has made me more sensitive to the needs of the horses.
I feel like I appreciate them more now than I did when I was younger. I am fortunate
to be around them.
The horses at High Hopes are very special. They have had a big impact on my life.
Chaussy helped my balance and trunk. Doc made me independent and taught me to
canter. They have all helped me to become an independent rider as well as a confident
and focused high school graduate.

began riding at High Hopes in the fall of 2007.
As a timid four year old, Charlie was uncertain
and hesitant. Each week his Mom, Kathy, would watch carefully from the side-
lines, waiting for that potentially explosive moment. It never came! The improve-
ments came slowly over time as the relationship between Nifty and Charlie, as well
as his trust in his sidewalker, created a safe zone for Charlie that allowed him to
grow and blossom with self confidence and new-found skills. Charlie is now riding
with a group after school and he continues to shine! Kathy recently wrote High
Hopes a letter that shows how important Charlie’s steady gains have been:
Charlie is an incredibly sweet little guy who at first glance seems like any other five-
year-old boy. When he was two and a half he was diagnosed with Developmental
Delays, a significant Speech Delay and SI Dysfunction.
We have watched his developmentally typical twin sister seek out and excel at numer-
ous activities while Charlie recoiled, never having the desire or more importantly the
mental or physical ability and coordination to participate in any structured activities.
When he did take part it would result in extreme frustration followed by tears and an
overwhelming sense of failure. This was very difficult for my husband and I to watch.
A safe zone…
Charlie

Last September, when I announced to Charlie that he would be riding at High Hopes
with his Mile Creek Pre-School class, I was greeted with his typical anxious response
“No, I don’t want to!” He did not want to go to school that day nor did he want to get
on the bus with his teachers and classmates. Once he arrived at High Hopes he did not
want to leave my side and he was extremely upset. However, through the encouragement
of his teachers and the instructors at High Hopes he reluctantly climbed up on a large
horse named Nifty and everything changed. He immediately smiled and then he started
talking non-stop to his sidewalkers… clearly! He was so happy —it was absolutely in-
credible. As the weeks went by he talked about Nifty constantly and we counted down
the days until he would ride again. There was a transformation taking place in Charlie
and people were noticing that he was growing not only stronger, but more outgoing.
He was gaining both confidence as well as a sense of independence.
By the time Charlie’s Horse Show Day arrived in May he was giving Nifty commands
and leading him through and around cones by himself with an enormous smile on his
face. I was so incredibly proud of him, but more importantly, he was proud of himself.
Charlie had come so far in such a short period of time.
Charlie continues to ride at High Hopes and we still count down the days until his next
session. He has a picture of himself on Nifty next to his bed with his Horse Show and
Camp medals hanging from the sides. High Hopes has truly impacted Charlie’s life in a
very profound way. It is a magical place.

Annual GivingHigh Hopes supporters are a diverse group of indi-
viduals who share a common generosity of spirit with
their contributions to our program. Marguerite and
Tom Moore have been supporters of High Hopes for
many years and recently expressed their reasons for
giving and, while the sentiments may be Marguerite
and Tom’s, we know they are shared by the hundreds
who gave to our 2008 Annual Giving campaign: High
Hopes is such a rewarding organization. You see immedi-
ate results and long lasting accomplishments. We are privi-
leged to be able to contribute to our favorite charity.

Horse Show Days
This years Horse Show saw a major format shift by
becoming a week-long event. The revised format was
also a big hit with our parents as expressed by Jennifer
Curley, mother of riders Mathew, Andrew and James:
The horse show was a very special week for our family.
Each of our three boys participated and as a family we
were overjoyed with the number of family and friends that
attended to show their support.

Symphony in the MeadowsThe success of our major benefit, Symphony in the
Meadows, is the result of the support and hard work
of countless volunteers. An essential component to
Symphony’s success is the support we received from
hundreds of area businesses, auction donors, hors
d’ouevres providers and ticket buyers. We asked Frank
Jarrabeck, owner and founder of Essence Center for
Beauty and Wellness, in Old Saybrook to explain why
he choses to support this event:
“I have several clients who volunteer at High Hopes and
speak highly of how the organization has helped them and
our community. High Hopes is run by a highly professional
team, with great follow through, that as a businessman
I truly appreciate. They are committed to helping people
that need help and I am proud to be involved and will
continue to support the High Hopes team.”

ShannaBorn with spina bifida Shanna began riding at High
Hopes in 1986. Her early goals included improving
her balance and ability to sit independently.
Through hard work and determination Shanna has
far exceeded these initial goals and, as she states
below, is now riding independently. Here is her story
of gaining independence:
I have been riding with High Hopes since I was 6 years
old. When I first started riding there I had little ability
to sit up by myself due to not having sturdy balance. I
was very timid about trying new things such as learn-
ing to trot on the horse. Over the years through riding
I have learned how to keep my balance. I also learned
that it was all right to try new things because there are
always people around that could help me if I need it.
I have also learned to ride independently over the years. When I first started riding I had to have a person
leading the horse and also two people standing with me just incase I needed them. Now I am able to ride the
horse off lead and I only have one person walking with me on the side. It has taught me to become indepen-
dent and how to do things on my own both on and off the horse. I have learned that as long as I try something
and do not give up I can do it.
Riding at High Hopes has been a great experience for me, I have learned a lot about horses as well as about myself
through riding. I have been able to move out of my mother’s house, graduate from college, and live in my own
home. I have learned through trying things and having a positive attitude can help become independent.

VolunteersHigh Hopes volunteers are committed and hard work-
ing in all the areas they serve. They are also our best
ambassadors. We want to share three excerpts from
some recent Public Service Announcements that were
prepared by Hall Radio for airing on their local stations
(Classic Hits 98.7, WCTY 97.7, and KOOL 101):
Will, Horse Leader: When you volunteer at High
Hopes you actually see the empowerment and it makes
you feel good. I do it (volunteering) for selfish reasons;
there is nothing noble about it!
Marilyn, Barn Volunteer: It’s important to help
someone feel good about themselves. Being on a horse
feels powerful and it’s pretty cool that I get to help them
do that.
Kathi, Unmounted Equine Learning Volunteer:
I think I was always looking for something to finish
rounding off who I am as a person. Volunteering at High
Hopes ended up being a perfect match for me. I get out
548 Volunteers contributed their time and talents for 29,000 hours of service
5969 volunteer hours were spent in the barn on horse care and facility managment
14781 volunteer hours were given to the riding program as horse leaders and side walkers
Over 1000 leadership hours were given by our 21 Board Members
243 hours were given in community service
Office and mailing volunteers donated 1287 hours
315 hours were served by our driving program volunteers
5405 hours were spent by volunteers in committee meetings, planning special events, working on training and education programs, manning our reception desk and just being here!
