THE almost total destruction of Mt Lawley Primary School in a deliberately lit blaze last Saturday was avoidable says the fi re fi ghters union.

Secretary Kevin Jolly told the Voice the union had argued for years that all WA schools and heritage buildings needed smoke alarms linked directly to the nearest fi re brigade.

Mr Jolly said by the time neighbours were alerted to the fi re by breaking glass and called 000, the building was probably already doomed: If the glass goes, you have lost the battle, he said.

The alarms, known as DBAs, alert the fi re brigade the moment they detect smoke.

If there was a DBA, there is a more than 60 per cent chance of saving the building, Mr Jolly said.

The thing that annoys me is that on the east coast and in New Zealand, they have to have DBAs in every shop.

Here we have very lax laws.A critical factor in a fi re is a

phenomenon known as fl ashover, where a room becomes so hot the trapped gases explode and it becomes a deadly inferno. According to the royal commission into Victorias bushfi res, it occurs about 7.7 minutes after ignition.

Firefi ghters took over eight minutes to get to Mt Lawley primary after the fi rst call.

Mr Jolly said the time it took to get to the fi re also brought into question FESAs decision to close local fi re stations and create a super-station at Osborne Park.

We couldnt help but wonder what diff erence it would have

from page 1says he feels only excitement about Nayas public premiere at John Curtin College of the Arts in Fremantle on July 28.

De Vries-Turnell looks after the business side as well as being a chorister, and says the pairs experience after leaving high school led them to establishing Naya. When we left high school there was a group called the WA Youth Chorale, but that folded after a year or two, he said.

We were getting to the end of our degrees and felt there was a gap in the market.

They tried a few amateur choirs but werent happy with the standard and wanted something with a funkier repertoire.

De Vries-Turnell says its interesting that chorale music doesnt have the depth of orchestral music in WA.

The Perth Modern School music program graduates targeted old classmates and others from Churchlands, and soon had 60 people ready to audition. Halfway through they realised there was a shortage of deeper voices.

We rang all the girls who were auditioning and said what guys do you know? Brockway says. Its now really balanced, which is rare for a choir in Perth.

De Vries-Turnell says one of the 40-strong choirs other assets is that each member already had a chorale background, so theres no weak link.

Theyre even singing a composition by one of their own, Alex Turley, who was just 15 when he penned I Carry Your Heart.

Nobody can believe that someone that young wrote it, its such a mature composition, Brockway says.

The choir also covers high school classics such as Ave Maria through to the poppy Hide and Seek by Imogen Heap.

The pair hopes to tour WA once the debuts out of the way, and have ambitions to sing at the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing in 2015.

Tickets for Nayas concert are available through BOCS on 9484 1133 and to get a taste of the choir, theres a sample on www.nayachorale.com/concert which shows de Vries-Turnell is also a dab hand with a video camera.

VINCENT mayor Alannah MacTiernan says shell consider a public forum to explain the eff ect of rezoning part of Mt Hawthorn.

Following resident Michelle Dewells complaint last week the council was sneaking the rezoning through by keeping locals in the dark, (Council sneaky, Perth Voice, July 7, 2012) Ms MacTiernan concedes that sometimes her planners have di culty communicating in plain language.

We have had some issues about the language in the documents, the mayor told the Voice, noting she drafts her own

letters where she shies away from jargon.

To be fair, though, this has been on the table some years and has been caught up in other scheme amendments, she said.

The aff ected neighbourhood around Scarborough Beach and Powis Street faces a zoning increase from R50 to R60, which paves the way for multiple dwellings on modest suburban blocks.

We need to talk through what that means and what the implications are, and what are the ways we can manage the consequences, Ms MacTiernan says, adding increased density is inevitable but she thinks there are ways to make it less confronting for residents.

OLYMPIC fever hit Forrest Place this week as the Big Top Olympians put on a show for kids to start their holidays in style.

Performances every day at 10.30am, 12.30pm and 2.30pm until July 21. Tickets can be collected 9am on the day of the performance.

Former Stirling councillor Paul Collins, who still sits on the local emergency committee, agrees and says Mt Lawleys in a dangerous black spot fi re crews cant get to in time.

He disputes FESAs claims there are no international standards for response times, saying a quick look at stations in major cities around the world show they strive to get to fi res within six minutes.

Mr Jolly says the response time would have been slower except for the fact the fi re was reported just before midnight when there was little tra c around.

Schoolmates rally

Don Barba (below). Photos by Steve Grant

Maria Binns was the third generation of her family to attend Mt Lawley primary, one of a steady stream of ex-students who visited

the school after the fi re. Her father Colin Binns was WAs senior citizen of the year fi ve years ago and is famous for creating the

2 fruits and 5 veg health campaign. Ms Binns says her 94-year-old great aunt Eva, who became WAs chief statistician, told her

stories about trenches around the school dug for World War 1 that the students would still use for fi re drills. Im a teacher as well, so

it shocks me at a deeper level, Ms Binns said.

by STEVE GRANT

WHEN Mt Lawley primary year 5 student Joshua Thompson heard his school had burned down he burst into tears.

I had a special pen that my mum bought for me, he says of the gift shed picked up while in the Kimberley. And some of my artwork.

Joshua was comforted by big sister Ebony, but shes still coming to terms with the fact she wont get to complete year 7 at the school, which had only just celebrated its 100th anniversary.

I like going here, its got good teachers and a good education, she told the Voice.

Ebony was concerned about being separated from her friends when school returns in a weeks time, but thats been allayed by the news all students will move to Mt Lawley high school until the primary is rebuilt.

Premier Colin Barnett toured the site on Monday and said the school would be rebuilt before the 2014 school year.

Mr Barnetts visit was soured by one of his small army of minders warning principal Don Barba within earshot of the Voice not to say anything to embarrass the premier. Mr Barnett copped backlash last month for ticking off a principal who warned parents his school wasnt safe because promised funds for urgent repairs went elsewhere.

Mr Barba, who watched the fi re after being called by a parent in the middle of the night, had just been praised by opposition leader Mark McGowan.

Don Barba showed true

leaderhip for the community, Mr McGowan said.

He also committed to rebuilding the school if Labor was returned to power.

Mr McGowans praise was echoed by all the parents who stopped by to see the damage and console each other.

Karalee Connetta says the school always seems to make sure kids arent left behind, taking the time to ensure they understand a lesson before moving on.

She says her son Ben, whos in year 3, was worried hed have to start from year 1 when he heard the school had been destroyed.

I really hope its going to be fi xed, my favourite was art, and I really miss my teacher, Ben said, forgetting amongst the bustle of fi re engines and politicians that it was only three days earlier that hed seen her.

Mr Barba said after the

gut-wrenching experience of watching the fi re, hed been overwhelmed by how the school community had rallied.

Just after the fi re I had an ex-student ring me, and he said theres 25 of us, when can we come in and start cleaning up, Mr Barba said.

He said there had already been talk about how to commemorate the fi re, with suggestions of making a wall from 500 bricks salvaged from the fi re.

Rates before residentsVINCENT city council in supporting the medium-density future of Mt Hawthorn (Voice, July 7, 2014) is motivated by vested interests, in as much as it stands to get six sets of rates instead of the existing one.

Who benefi ts? Not us, our properties go down in value while developers in cahoots with council profi t.

Consider a block of six units on one suburban block, total cost of $1.35 millionthats a cost of just over $200,000 each. To be sold for $350,000 to $400,000. Who would be crazy to build just three to a block? More profi t for six.

Inside the paper the mayor talks about more trees for Vincentwhere is she going to put them?

By the time she fi nishes with her socialist theme, there wont be a mature tree left. I question parking, the councils reply is gobbledegook. Twelve bins on the verge, if it isnt occupied by cars.

The council fobs off questions. The council couldnt give a damn.

Robert HartAnderson St, Mt HawthornThe Ed says: This letter has been

edited for clarity.

Too high a priceA HIGH price was paid for the lack of a fi re station in the inner northern suburbs on Sunday morning when our beautiful and historic Mt Lawley Primary school was obliterated.

Given 85 per cent of buildings on the large school site was lost, I can only initially surmise the response times of fi re crews were inadequate.

The defi ciency of a local fi re station and the resultant poor response times is a matter that has been ignored by local, state and federal Governments for many years.

Saving buildings from fi re is primarily about response times, I dont care how magnifi cent the fi re station is in Osborne Park that is supposed to service usit is too far away (as are the Perth CBD and Bassendean stations).

I would suggest to the Liberal and Labor candidates for the state parliamentary seat of Mt Lawley that they get a commitment from their respective parties to build the local fi re station we should have had (and used to have in North Perth) in the fi rst place.

For a devastated community, tea and sympathy will not be enough. At the next state election we want a commitment to get our fi re station back.

Perhaps Stephen Smith could also enlighten us as to what he has done over the past 19 years as our local federal member of parliament to try to address the fi re station black hole that covers the vast majority of his electorate?

Architect defi es Synergy on carbon tax hit

Syd Thoo is defying Synergys cabon tax hit. Photo by Steve Grant

by STEVE GRANT

PERTH architect Syd Thoo is refusing to pay the increase in green power Synergy has attributed to the Gillard governments carbon tax.

The electricity retailer created a storm last week when it claimed it was too hard to work out whether its EarthFriendly customers were getting conventional or renewable energy, so it was putting a blanket 2.225 cents per kilowatt hour extra on every bill.

Mr Thoo, whos o ce in Pier Street specialises in sustainable housing, wrote to Synergys retail manager Donald MacKenzie telling him the move borders on unethical behaviour.

Consequently, I wish to advise you as of my next Synergy bill, I will be calculating the diff erence in cost between the new and previous unit rate for eletricity, and only paying the amount due that does not include the new carbon charges, Mr Thoo wrote.

He told the Voice this week he chose a little bit of civil disobedience rather than simply opting out of the scheme because he was concerned it would punish renewable energy providers.

Newspapers are saying people are leaving in droves, but I still believe in green power, he said.

Mr Thoo says hell be refusing to pay both his household and business bills, and while hes yet to broach the subject with another fi rm that shares his o ce space, hes confi dent theyll join his campaign.

An adjunct lecturer at UWAs architecture department, Mr Thoo is running a workshop on sustainable housing on August 12.

Vincent opts outVINCENT city council has pulled out of Synergys green power program.

Mayor Alannah MacTiernan told the Voice the council has lost confi dence in Synergys commitment to renewable energy and can make better use of the money itself.

I put forward a motion to take that $85,000 out and put it into a dedicated fund for energy effi ciency and renewable energy, Ms MacTiernan said.

She was already planning the move before the energy retailer decided to pass the carbon tax on to green power customers, but says that

performance cemented our view. The council has been paying an $85,000

premium annually for green power. That buys a lot of solar panels, Ms

MacTiernan said.It could also be used to implement LED

lighting in some of the buildings that are still using fl uro.

Her late motion was backed by Dudley Maier, whod also signed up to green power at home. Cr Maier said considering there were only 7000 green power customers across the state, Synergy had done great damage to its reputation for little return.

A PROPOSAL to demolish an iconic 63-year old building in Bayswater has been approved ahead of the sites redevelopment.

The Lombardis building, circa 1949, will make way for new factories, showrooms and car parking facilities.

However, most believed the redevelopment would improve the area.

While its important to do our bit for the environment and reduce our footprint, you dont want to substitute it with something that could be worse.

Ms MacTiernan was surprised to learn that some alternatives werent environmentally-friendly.

From what I know brown paper bags actually take more energy to make than plastic bags, she said.

There is also some suggestion there are problems with corn starched bags when they break down.

If the council determined that banning the bags was an environmental plus, it would get to work on drafting a local law within months.

UK comedian Bill Bailey reckons hes partly responsible for Julia Gillard being prime minister.

Two years ago Kevin Rudd was PM when hed arrived for a tour, he told the Voice on the blower from his southern England home.

I went to bed in my hotel and when I woke up he was goneand there was Julia.

Perth is fi rst stop of his 2012 tour, so. . . watch out, he warns. That was literally days before new WA treasurer Troy Buswell publicly denied interest in being premier.

Like all fi rst-grade comedians the side-splittingly funny BaileyBlack Books and QIcan be highly thoughtful and serious and, before hitting Australia, hes stopping off in Borneo, not for a comedy tour but to make a documentary about Alfred Wallace, who shared line-honours with Charles Darwin over the theory of evolution.

Wal lace had come from humble stock while Darwin was well connected, with in fl uential friends, Bailey says.

As late as 1901 it was known as the Darwin/Wallace theory, he says with passion, but hes

ARTSJENNY DANGERAAAAAAJEJE

been unfairly treated. . .airbrushed from history. Its my aim to redress that.

A classically trained musician, Bailey is also a long-time supporter of International Animal Rescue, The Sumatran Orangutan Society and the Battersea Dogs and Cats Home.

Along with his comic roles hes drawn acclaim for dramatic roles.

Everything I do comes from the same place of passion, whether comedy or drama.

With his trademark skullit hair Bailey hits Perth for one night only for his show Qualmpeddler, a musical, multimedia mishmash overlaid with surreal comedy.

A qualmpeddler hawks concern, anxiety. Its someone who throws out [an idea] and gets you to chew it over.

Audience participation is meat to Baileys shows and, along with throwing out questions on just about anything, including cognitive physics, he welcomes

interjection. I d o n t t h i n k o f i t a s

heckling, I think of it as having a conversation.

His style of humour translates easily and Perth has been very responsive.

[Theres] a shared sense of irreverence, a jaundiced view of authority.

Unlike many comics Bailey says he didnt get into the game to overcome shyness.

Ive been a show-off since childhood.

Despite years of performing, he admits hes still not immune from the cold sweats.

Four oclock in the morning, staring at the computer screen thinking this is it. Theres only a fi nite number of jokes in your head and you have run out.

Its a problem solved with a phone call to understanding fellow comics (no matter the time) and a cuppa and a biscuit, Bailey says.

And for the record there will be no more Black Books (sob).

Qualmpeddler is on at the Perth Convention Centres Riverside Theatre, Sunday August 26.

Tickets at www.ticketek.com.au or on 132 849.

THE industrial grunge o f t h e u b e r - f u n k y Trustee Bar and Bistro on St Georges Terrace was the perfect foil for a lunch tryst with a man not my husband.

Think basement, grey concrete walls, exposed pipes and moody lighting.

The marble stairs of the majestic old WA Trustee building lead down to the restaurant or up to a fantastically appointed barcomplete with a huge angel soaring overhead.

Its a slick watering hole sure to be a favourite with city workers for after-work drinks.

After an approving glance inside I rushed downstairs, quickly brushing wind blown hair and applying lippy to greet Voice photographer Jeremy with a peck on the cheek.

No other couples were sighted, rather a disproportionate number of business-suited men dining in huddles of four.

Perhaps a sign the glass ceiling is holding strong in the mining boom wild west?

The few women in evidence had the look of western suburbs wives or trendy young things living out a Seinfield fantasy, because The Trustee could easily be in New York or Melbourne.

A look at the menu revealed why; this bistro is aiming at the top end of town with elegantly trendy surroundings and orgasmic food.

Order a tuna nicoise elsewhere and chances are the tuna will

come out of a can, here theyre fresh steaks, seared outside, but gloriously pink and barely warm inside.

A t $ 2 9 i t s o u n d e d mouthwatering but Id had my heart set on the pink snapper ($36).

It arrived on a bed of creamy, smooth mashed potato, topped with crisp pickled vegetables and rocket and was so delicious it has spoilt me for fi sh anywhere else.

My companion tucked into the chicken salad ($26).

The Trustee has turned standard fare on its head and, unlike many where a mound of salad hides a few slices of breast meat, here the chicken was king, with two mouthwatering, tender chunksand just enough salad

to satisfy.Despite its brevity the dessert

menu posed a dilemma. Banana sou e and sticky date

ice cream ($16) or chocolate salted caramel crme with crme fraiche ice cream?

Polenta ricotta trifle with candied walnuts ($10) or a cheese platter $15)?

T h e a p p l e a n d v a n i l l a mascarpone crme brulee with apple sorbet ($16) won outand what a win it was.

The toffee topping on the brulee cracked like a soft-boiled egg, revealing the rich, creamy dessert beneath.

The accompanying apple sorbet was fresh and crisp, tasting like apples of childhood memory, eaten straight off the tree.

Replete in mind and body it was time to head back to the work and real life, and memories of a superb lunch.

NEARER my God to thee couldnt be truer than at this complex in Raglan Road, Mt Lawley, with 10 two- and three-bed dwellings in the old North Perth Congregational Church.

Award-winning heritage architect fi rm Palassis took out the 2005 Vincent council conservation award for its heavenly residential make-over of the 1903 church, and nearby Sunday school and hall, at the corner of Raglan and William Streets.

The restoration uncovered bricked-over gothic windows (now restored) and a 1903 copy of the West Australian newspaper.

This unit is one of three modern abodes built to blend in with, but not copy, the churchs heritage architecture.

Devilishly clever design has made the most of compact spaces to create a spacious, light-fi lled three-bedroom/three-bathroom home.

Downstairs is the open-plan living/dining/kitchen area, one of the bedrooms (used as a study) a bathroom and a separate laundrywith a drying courtyard and storage area.

The kitchen has a surprising 13 cupboards (as well as a swag of drawers) and is fi tted with white caesar-stone benchtops.

A bank of bifold windows above the sink open to become a servery to a lovely north-facing courtyard garden.

With a row of gothic church windows peeping over the fence, along with lots of sunshine, youll feel blessed as you read the Sunday paper over coff ee.

Upstairs is the spacious main and a second bedroom, each with ensuite.

The main ensuite has a shower as well as a deep soaker bath and double vanities.

The bedroom opens up onto a balcony, perfect for those with an urge to play Romeo and Juliet, or Moses in the sermon on the mount.

The complexs Greenwich name came from the agent, a Friends fan.

He reckons the architectural style

resembles New Yorks Greenwich village, which is 3km from the NY town hall (this Greenwich is 3km from the Perth town hall).

Close to the Beaufort Street strip with its plethora of late-night cafes, bars, clubs and restaurants, you can sin all night and go home to beg forgiveness.

What are you waiting for? Buy a Lotto coupon and start praying.

ARIES (Mar 21 Apr 20)Uranus appears to be going backwards in the sky. As he hits reverse, so you

reverse your gaze. All those problems that seemed to be coming from the outside, are somehow being generated by an attitude on the inside. Heres a golden opportunity to de-stress yourself.

TAURUS (Apr 21 May 20)The Moon begins her week in Taurus. She brings a mood of pensive refl ection.

As you come to terms with the opportunities at your fi ngertips, so its a good time to ponder the implications of your choices. Do whats best for your heart. Keep it happy no matter what.

GEMINI (May 21 June 21)Theres an interesting planetary clash going on, that is refl ected

in the differences between what your soft watery intuition has got to say, and what your very astute, very clever mind has to say. Action is to be taken, but it has to come from the right place. Know your heart.

CANCER (June 22 July 22)If you get overly locked into what you think is doing the right thing for

others, theres a chance that it will be your idea and not what they really want. Mellow out your love. Let it come from a gentle space that is made stronger by self-love. Only the nurtured can nurture.

LEO (July 23 Aug 22)Mercury is in your midst. Mercury is either an over-active mind that can

be the trickster, or he is clarity, insight and guidance. See through unclouded fresh eyes. Drop your preconceptions again and again before deciding what is really going on. A playful vision is right.

VIRGO (Aug 23 Sept 22)With Mercury in Leo, you are pushed to discover and express your individuality.

Hiding your light is not being true. Shining it in everybodys faces is not true. Knowing it on the inside and gently radiating it is getting close. Enjoy being yourself. Its good to be alive.

LIBRA (Sept 23 Oct 23)Though you are primed to act, a fl urry of undirected activity is not whats

required. What is required is that you do the things that honour freedom, in yourself and others - and which lead to some kind of personal regeneration. Stop repeating what doesnt work.

SCORPIO (Oct 24 Nov 21) More and more, life is about coming out of your cave and

communicating who you are. There is not much point in keeping your greatest assets a big secret. Perhaps you wont even come to know what you know, until you start sharing it. Connect and communicate.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov 22 Dec 21)Find a creative balance between the part of you that wants to be alone and the

part of you that wants to hang out with a thousand buddies. If you overdo the former, people will start looking a little strange. If you overdo the latter, youll lose depth and spice. Steady goes.

CAPRICORN (Dec 22 Jan 19)You are standing at the pointy end of matters of war and peace. Theres war

and peace on the front page of the newspapers. Theres war and peace between lovers and friends. And theres the war and peace within ourselves. Clearly transformation has to happen. Start now.

AQUARIUS (Jan 20 Feb 18)Relationship is on the radar. Relationship is not simple, no matter how many myths

are pedalled about it. Relationship involves receiving a clear refl ection in the mirror. Are you prepared to see parts of yourself that youve never seen before? If this is your joy, then go deep.

PISCES (Feb 19 Mar 20)The best plan, in what are slightly testing times astrologically for fi sh

persons, is to focus on the basics. Keep it simple. Be grounded. Do the things that you know you can do. Build on your strengths. Do this - and there is pleasure, satisfaction and bliss to be found.

Call me Jack, says John Curtin in the new political thriller by Deckchair

Theatre, The Fremantle Candidate.

In 1929, Jack Curtin took the hopes and dreams of his constituents to Canberra as the member for Fremantle. But in 31 Labor lost power and he returned to Perth a broken man, his spirit crushed. This engrossing political thriller follows the next three pivotal years as Curtin started from scratch, battling alcoholism and personal demons against the looming reality of the Great Depression.

Voice readers have the chance to get to know the real man before he was Prime Minister, back when he was fi ghting for his political career and for his personal life at home in Cottesloe, and in and around Fremantle. Identify the well-known location behind Jack Curtin in this photo for the chance for you and a friend to win tickets to the show, one Breakaway night for two at

Wheres Curtin?

THE hills of Canberra were alive with music last week as DIANE BROCK, of East Perth was quick to spot.
