CHRISTMAS GIFT GUIDE
5 WAYS TOFEEL FESTIVEIT’S THE SEASON TO BE JOLLY
1. CHRISTMAS COOKING Nothing says Christmas like festive flavours. Why not try baking these Christmas gingerbread cookies?
Ingredients350g/12oz plain flour, plus extra for roll-ing out1 tsp bicarbonate of soda2 tsp ground ginger1 tsp ground cinnamon125g/4½oz butter175g/6oz light soft brown sugar1 free-range egg4 tbsp golden syrup Preparation methodSift together the flour, bicarbonate of soda, ginger and cinnamon and pour into the bowl of a food processor. Add the butter and blend until the mix looks like breadcrumbs. Stir in the sugar. Lightly beat the egg and golden syrup together, add to the food processor and pulse until the mixture clumps together. Tip the dough out, knead briefly until smooth, wrap in clingfim and leave to chill in the fridge for 15 minutes. Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4. Line two baking trays with greaseproof paper. Roll the dough out to a 0.5cm/¼in thick-ness on a lightly floured surface. Using cutters, cut out the gingerbread men shapes and place on the baking tray, leaving a gap between them. For deco-rations, use a skewer to make a small hole in the top of each biscuit.
Bake for 12-15 minutes, or until lightly golden-brown. Leave on the tray for 10 minutes and then move to a wire rack to finish cooling. When cooled decorate with the writing icing and cake decora-tions.
2. CHRISTMAS PANTO No Christmas is complete without a pantomime - a rich British tradition. Hackney Empire is staging Mother Goose (right) starring Grande dame of pantomime Clive Rowe and Olivier-award winning actress Sharon D Clarke, while at Stratford East rising star Helen Aluko plays Belle in Beauty & the Beast.
3. SHOP AFRICAN Online platform Styled by Africa will be hosting an African-inspired gift shop on Saturday, November 29 between 10am and 6pm at Hassan Hajjaj Store, 30-32 Calvert Avenue, Shoreditch E2 7JP of-fering high-quality fashion gifts sourced from designers across the continent.
4. PERFECT FAMILY MOVIEOnce the madness of Christmas Day is over, escape the Boxing Day sales and head to the cinema for the remake of heartwarming classic Annie starring Quvenzhané Wallis as the lovable title character, Jamie Foxx as Daddy Warbucks and Cameron Diaz as Miss Hannigan.
5. DO A GOOD DEED Christmas is not just about over-indul-gence, it’s also a time of charity. Do your bit for the less fortunate by donat-ing to organisations such as Brixton Soup Kitchen who are fundraising to buy a van to help them expand their work feeding the needy. You could also help give the gift of life by registering organ donor with the African Caribbean Leukeamia Trust or donate £3 by simply texting ‘ACLT’ to 70300.
An original gift idea they’ll love all year long…
