Directors’ notesIt was in 2010 that Foy and I first saw The Marvelous Wonderettes. We both agreed it would be a great show for our SFP patrons. In 2012 many of you were able to see and enjoy The Marvelous Wonderettes performed here at the Strand Theater. The show was well received and when The Mar-velous Wonderettes: Caps and Gowns became available for production the cast was eager to reunite for the sequel. Our cast and band is the same talented troupe as last year with one exception, our keyboard player, Wanda Wall Duncan. We are happy and thankful to have her playing with us.
It has been an enjoyable challenge to bring The Marvelous Wonderettes: Caps and Gowns to the SFP stage for your enjoyment. For the past 10 weeks, I have been fortunate enough to be able listen to our talented musician and actresses, 4 nights a week, play and sing the great songs you are about to hear. I have watched them take their scripts and scores and form them into a fun filled toe tapping show I know you will enjoy.
It’s without a doubt, we have a great band and cast and we thank them for sharing their talent with us, but this production could not have been possible without the dedications of our many SFP volunteers who donate their time and talent to bring this show to life. With too many names to mention here, please take the time to read your playbill’s Cast and Production Staff (not during the show) to see who these Marvelous people are and a BIG thank you to them as well.

Donia Dawson [Cindy Lou] is from Georgetown. She graduated from Georgetown High School. She enjoyed a career singing with several bands up and down the east coast and performed in sev-eral shows such as The Dixie Stampede, High Steppin Country, and The Carolina Opry. She has two children, Danny Dawson and John Gerald Dawson. She is owner and operator of Southern Style Hair Salon located at 123 King St. Georgetown.
Ashley Plexico [Betty Jean] has loved music since she was able to stand on the piano bench as her Nanny played. This is her fifth performance with the Swamp Fox Players. Ashley loves to share her love for music in church and in her third grade classroom. Although her Nanny no longer can attend every performance like she has all of Ashley’s life, Ashley knows she is guiding her words and voice from Heaven. “I love you and miss you Nanny! This one is for you!”
Meredith Thompkins [Missy] is the daughter of Mitch and Jamie Thompkins. She and her sister Mallory were born in raised here in Georgetown. She grew up singing in church as a soloist and in the choir. She is currently a member of FBC Georgetown, where she sings in the choir and leads one of children’s choirs. She works as a medical assistant at Waccamaw Gastroenterology. This is Meredith’s third play at The Strand.
Josie Thames [Suzy] is so excited to return as a Wonderette, this time with her daughter, Cathryn! In the show, Suzy says, “I’d like to dedicate this to Richie, for he is my paper and I am his glue.” Off-stage, the opposite is true – Josie is dedicating her performance to her very own Richie, for he is the glue that holds her together when it seems the world is falling apart. “I love you, Richie!”
Chip Balthis [Guitar] was born in Rock Hill, SC, and got his hands on his first guitar at age 8. Grow-ing up in a musical family in the 1960s, he was exposed to many different genre of music in the home, from Classical to Big Band to Country, Jazz, and Rock & Roll. Chip played guitar and pedal steel guitar in the musical Always Patsy Cline in 2011, and also played in the original The Marvelous Wonderettes in 2012. He currently resides in Georgetown with his family.
Bruce N . Braynard [Bass] was born in Glen Cove, on Long Island. He started playing a bass at the age of 14, and continues to be on his passions. This is his third musical with the Swamp Fox Players, and he continues to be the bass player in the local band “The Foreclosures”. He has played for 18 years in church and also as a standby player for several other bands.
Mike Duncan [Drums] and his wife, Wanda live in Andrews. Mike has been playing drums for as long as there have been pots and pans! Mike has played in church, bands, and musicals for 40+ years from Oklahoma to Georgetown and beyond. Mike currently sings and drums for the Jazz/Blues band ‘After 5.’
Wanda Wall-Duncan [Piano] is from Hemingway. She and her husband, Mike live in Andrews. Wanda has been singing and playing for 40+ years. She is currently the lead singer in the Jazz/Blues band ‘After 5.’ Wanda believes music is healing and is VITAL in both education AND quality of life.
Roger Bean [Playwright] is the creator of the long-running off-Broadway smash hit The Marvelous Wonderettes, which has played in hundreds of theaters around the world. Mr. Bean also created two popular sequels for these four delightful song leaders from Springfield High: The Marvelous Won-derettes: Caps & Gowns and the holiday celebration Winter Wonderettes. Original cast albums for all three Wonderettes shows are available online at Amazon and iTunes. Additional audience-pleasing jukebox hits from Mr. Bean include Summer of Love, The Andrews Brothers, Why Do Fools Fall In Love?, Route 66 (over 100 productions throughout the country), and the long-running Los Ange-les hit Life Could Be A Dream, the ’60s doo-wop musical that received the LA Drama Critics Circle Award, the LA Weekly Theatre Award and the Backstage Garland Award for Outstanding Musical of 2010. www.rogerbean.com
