Using the VNX series Service LAN port Connecting your laptop to
the Storage Processors (SP) Service LAN port allows management and
code upgrades without using a customers management station or
connecting your laptop to the customers network.
IMPORTANT: The VNX Storage Processors Service LAN ports are not
always connected to an internal switch. The VNX5700 and VNX7500
Service LAN ports are internally switched and the VNX5100, 5300 and
5500 are not internally switched.
The Service LAN of the two SPs in every VNX series storage
system has the following factory-set IP addresses:
SP-A: 128.221.1.250 (Service LAN port on SP-A SAN Management
Module) SP-B: 128.221.1.251 (Service LAN port on SP-B SAN
Management Module)
1. [ ] To connect your laptop to the arrays Service LAN port and
access Unisphere Manager you must first set your laptops TCP / IP
Properties.
Note: The storage systems internal network (Service LAN) is
mutually exclusive from the customers main management ports on the
Storage Processor (SP).
2. [ ] Navigate to your Network Connections and select your
Local Area Connection, the physical LAN cable port on your
laptop.
3. [ ] On the TCP/IP Properties page, click the Use the
following IP address radio button.
4. [ ] Set your laptops TCP/IP properties to the IPs listed
below.
IP address: 128.221.1.249 Subnet mask 255.255.255.248 Default
Gateway 128.221.1.1 DNS server entries leave blank
Note: 128.221.1.254 can also be used to set your laptop.

VNX5700 or VNX7500: (C-500 or C-1000)
IMPORTANT: The VNX5700 and VNX7500 have the Service LAN ports
internally switched. Do not connect a switch or hub to the Service
LAN ports on these arrays.
CAUTION: Never connect a switch or hub between the two Service
LAN Ports on any VNX5700 or VNX7500 storage system. Connecting a
switch or hub will cause the internal ports to go up and down as
shown in the event logs. Use a single cable for a connection with a
hub or a direct connection from your laptop to the Service LAN
port. In the past, connecting a Hub to the management module has
caused a network storm. If this problem occurs, promptly remove the
Ethernet cable. Reseat the Management Module if the port appears
not to function. The Management Modules are hot-swappable and may
be removed and reseated without affecting the arrays operation.
Refer to emc199379.
5. [ ] Either Service LAN Interface may be used to connect to
either SPA or SPB.
VNX5100, VNX5300 and VNX5500: (C-75, C125 or C-250)
IMPORTANT: The VNX5100, 5300 and 5500 are not internally
switched so you may use a switch or hub to connect to the Service
LAN ports on these arrays.
6. [ ] Use a switch or hub to connect to the Service LAN ports
on the VNX5100, VNX5300 or VNX5500.
7. [ ] Ping both SPs to verify connectivity.
