What is vSphere 4?

• Translation: vSphere 4 lets you create and manage a virtualized IT infrastructure to simplify and automate the administration of the physical server and network infrastructure while allowing you to maximize the hardware potential of that infrastructure.

“VMware vSphere manages large collections of infrastructure (such as CPUs, storage, and networking) as a seamless and dynamic operating environment, and also manages the complexity of a datacenter.”

ESX/ESXi 4.0

• The Core component of vSphere 4• Type 1 Hypervisors• ESX installs with a Service Console for local

administration• Service Console is a stripped down Linux OS

• ESXi administration is all done through a remote management interface

• Remote Management Interfaces:• vSphere 4 Client Interface• vSphere 4 Web Interface (not enabled by default on ESX)• vShpere 4 Command-Line Interface• vCenter Server 4

Page 7: VMware vSphere 4 seminar presentation

7

ESX 4.0 Installation

• Non-VMFS formatted LUNs appear as unpartitioned

• Unplug SAN if LUNs not needed during ESX Install

9

Enterprise Converter Usage• vCenter Server 4.01 Plug-in enables Converter• Enterprise Converter is an optional component during vCenter

Server installation

Page 10: VMware vSphere 4 seminar presentation

10

VMware Converter Standalone

• vCenter Converter Standalone can be installed on any computer

• Client / Server architecture allows client and server to be on different computers

vSphere Management Assistant

• The VMware vSphere Management Assistant (vMA) is a prepackaged Linux virtual machine in which administrators can deploy scripts and select third-party agents to manage ESX and ESXi systems. Software included in vMA includes vSphere CLI, an authentication component that supports non-interactive login, and a log collection component.

16

• Integrated into Virtual Center for hosts and VMs

• Attach a baseline to scan or remediate (patch) host or VM

• Scans and patching can be run immediately or can be scheduled

vMotion

• Users currently accessing VM1-1 on ESX1

• Initiate migration of VM1-1 from ESX1 to ESX2 while VM1-1 is up and running ESX Server 1

Step One:

Step Two:• Pre-copy memory from ESX1 to ESX2• Log ongoing memory changes• Copy changed memory, Log new changes• Repeat copying changed memory until

remaining changes are small enough to copy during the quiesce

• Quiesce virtual machine on ESX1• Copy remaining memory to ESX2• Copy VM State information (registers, etc)

Step Three:

Step Four:• Start VM1-1 on ESX2• Users now access VM1-1 on ESX2

Step Five:• Delete VM1-1 from ESX1 after migration is

successful

Available Infrastructure Services

• Virtual Disk Thin Provisioning• vStorage VMFS Volume Grow• vNetwork Distributed Switch• IPv6 Support• Power Management

Page 28: VMware vSphere 4 seminar presentation

28

Virtual Disk Thin Provisioning

• VMware thin provisioning enables virtual machines to utilize storage space on an as-needed basis, further increasing utilization of storage for virtual environments

Page 29: VMware vSphere 4 seminar presentation

29

vStorage VMFS Volume Grow

• The list of possible extents to add will not include LUNs with an existing VMFS, or an RDM mounted to a VM

Page 30: VMware vSphere 4 seminar presentation

30

vNetwork Distributed Switch

• Created in Inventory Networking

Select which hosts are going to use this switch. Only unallocated NICs can be selected.

A default Portgroup called dvPortGroup can

be created.

Page 31: VMware vSphere 4 seminar presentation

31

IPv6 Support

• vSphere 4.0 adds support for IPv6 for the following:• ESX/ESXi VMkernel, • Service Console• vCenter Server

• This enables vSphere to manage ESX and ESXi hosts through vCenter Server in mixed IPv4/IPv6 environments

• Virtual Machine client support for IPv6 is still entirely dependent on the Guest OS

• Network storage support (iSCSI and NFS) over IPv6 is still experimental though
