Visual Vocabulary Tool Directions: The Visual Vocabulary Tool has been deveoped for newcomers to use as a reference for basic English vocabulary. It includes vocabulary words from different content areas. The tool is intended to help newcomers practice and acquire basic social and academic language. Vocabulary included in this resource are; colors, shapes, weather, days of the week, months of the year, seasons, school words, action words, body parts, clothing, emotions, family members, food, transportation, numbers, money, time, tools of measurement, math operations. This resource also includes a list of short conversational phrases for newcomers. The visual vocabulary tool has been developed as a resource and is not intended to replace teacher instruction. There are different ways of using this resource. Print a set (in color) for each student. The teacher can choose to have the students keep pages in a binder. Another alternative is to laminate and assemble pages with a book ring. Teachers may also assemble two manila folders to create a mini office for students. Manila folders can be glued together like a privacy folder (as seen below) and made into individual visual vocabulary offices. After gluing all the pages on the mini office, you can use one face of the folder to glue or velcro a letter chart. This will ensure that your newcomers have a vocabulary, math and letter reference chart as they go through their school day.
