One morning I woke up to find out I had ten dollars in my hand, and less than thirty in my bank account. My next paycheck was a week away. I had to survive a whole week in New York City on a little more than thirty dollars-- without any groceries. So what did I do? I left my residence hall and went out. I found a lot of cheap food on St. Mark’s Place, in the East Village. It turned out

that surviving a week in New York City, on a little more than thirty dollars, wasn’t as difficult as I had expected it to be.

I found myself buying one dollar pizza, hanging with my friends and taking photos in Washington Square Park at midnight, and the next day, at Union Square Park, drawing people. I also shot movies around the city in all sorts of locations. Between classes I

would grab water from the fountains in the SVA buildings.

Growing up in the Bronx, NY was hard, I was not allowed to play with the neighborhood kids because it was too dangerous, Instead I stayed in-side and watched cartoons. Cartoons played a huge role in the way my il-lustrations look today. I enjoy bright colors and graphic lines and I can thank my strict mother and cable television for bringing me to where I

am today.

The city began to inspire me. I started to draw again, and play more bass. I got into more local bands and discovered there were venues in Brooklyn that were cheap to go to and brought a lot of fun with them.

Sitting in my res-hall room, doing homework, or watching TV on my computer- these were the things restricting my experience of New York City. Everyone deserves the chance to go out and get a dollar slice and find themselves on a rooftop in Brooklyn by the end of the day.

R a c h e l H i n e sThese photographs show how buildings shape the sky; they show the positive and negative space that buildings create. The images are about a place and a time; a moment to experience a crisp blue sky, to feel a stark emotion. This project shows how lifting eyes toward the sky creates a sense of space, despite the pres-ence of massive structures which other-wise dominate the viewer’s perspective. Each photograph allows the viewer to es-cape into a world that is not often seen. TOWERING SKYSCRAPERS

sometimes Manhattan isn’t so great. But, the parks remind you that there are places in the city that aren’t a part of the chaos. There is nature within the urban jungle. There are places that can be comforting and calming;

you just have to find them.DISCOVER NYC

USP is a great local park close to SVA. Monday, Wednes-day, Friday and Saturday from 8 AM - 6 PM is the

Farmer’s Market. It’s a year round green market in Union Square Park.

Around Thanksgiving the Union Square Holiday Market will open up as well. For more information, Google them

MSP is located in the heart of the Flat Iron District on 23 rd Street and Fifth Avenue. Along with the famous Shake Shack, there are also art exhibits and a bevy of on going park programs. Right now there is an art exhibit, Scattered Light, by artist Jim Campell, until February. His outdoor exhibit is made from 2,000 encased LED’s in standard light bulbs, which creates his moving art. The park also host many music events, outdoor markets and movies. Check out all they have to offer at:

Going to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden is a great cheap thing to do in NYC ($4 for students!). I grew up in Colorado, so I love (and often miss!) nature. I enjoy walking around the gardens, bring-ing food to eat on the Cherry Esplanade, taking photos, and draw-ing. I highly recommend this wonderful New York experience.

Manhattan is your playground. Every-one and everything in it can bring you

inspiration. The world renounced graph-ic designer and former SVA faculty

member Milton Glaser was a product of New York, but also managed to make the

city into his product by iconizing it with the I<3NY logo that the whole world

knows and adores.

LYNNE YUNMy favorite thing to do in NYC as a student is going to the bronx zoo and listening to my favorite song while walking around the vast wonders of nature. I tried to illustrate my mood when I am at the zoo

listening to my favorite song.

J O N N Y R U Z Z O I love drawing as much as I can, especially drawing from life and observation. One of my favorite things is going to different plac-es in NYC, such as museums and parks, and drawing anything and everything that I see

there in my Moleskine.

Garage Sales, Flea Markets, etc- What I love about NYC is how abundant impromtu garage sales seem to be. Even in Manhattan (but usually around the east village... You can usually find some average-good ones in Brooklyn on Bedford Ave (a favourite of mine that sells cool vintage jewelry and knick knacks can be found on N7th and Bedford). To a lesser extent, Queens can have some cool ones too. I advise people to check out Brooklyn Flea which is a massive ‘flea market’ full of fun things, cool clothes and food galore! You’ll find some great deals!

- Dana Decoursey

Collecting old books, mugs, cheap knickknacks, or anything from a flea market can bring you into the New York City culture. Flea markets are an amazing way to discover the different sides of people, and see them in a new light. The variety of people

who visit, buy and sell at the markets can be inspirational characters. Their energy could take your art to a new level.

James BascaraFor this particular series, I was inspired by sto-ries of magic realism, specifically those by Ga-briel Garcia Marquez. They do not illustrate any events or plot lines, though the images I’ve painted were invoked by words I’ve read and may be combined with a personal narrative. I scavenge through flea markets and thrift stores to search through hundreds of old family photos just to find the perfect image. I use these ordi-nary pictures with seemingly humble origins, and give them their own sense of magic realism.

The 24 x 36 inch digital exhibition prints place the viewer and subject nose to nose, allowing for physical interaction between the two. Each subject engages the camera’s lens with varying degrees of directness. Viewers are given the opportunity to look into a mirror, of sorts, and have the eyes look back. Some stare indignantly, while others show more restraint. The exhibition will run November 1 through November 15 in the 6th floor Gallery at 214 E. 21st Street.

It is never too early to start sharing your art with the world. SVA gives you a chance to exhibit your work while you are still in school. Taking advantage of this opportunity will no doubt enhance your experience. The SVA galleries are : Gallery in the main building on 23rd stWestside Gallery at the 141 W 21st buildingVisual Arts Gallery in Chelsea at 601 W 26th St, 15th flooras well as galleries constantly taking place in photo, library, and west-side buildingsBe sure to check out the Chelsea Galleries every once in a while. Oluremi WhiteEven though I am still enrolled at The School of Visual Arts as a student, I am at the same time trying to get an early start to my career. I have had as many as 10 shows, since I was a Freshman with a couple being affialiated through SVA. I am also very happy that there are people who take a liking to my work. I feel that your audience is everything, therefore I feel like I am doing something right when there are people who ask questions, and tell me what they feel about my work. With all of the success with shows and exposure I will forever be hard

on myself to do the best and prove myself wrong. The next show I will be featured in that I know of will be:

Amy’s BreadThere are two NYC locations of this cute and cozy pastry shop. Perfect for an inexpensive and small breakfast/brunch/lunch. My meal of a decaf coffee and olive bread twist was around two dollars!

Page 23: Visual Opinion Discover Issue

Two Bro’s PizzaAnother St. Marks staple, this place is known far and wide

for it’s surprisingly good $1 slice. The line is sometimes pretty long for this place and seats are always taken by ob-

noxious high schoolers. I suggest getting a slice from here and going to sit on the steps of Search and Destroy across

the street.

Mamoun’s Falafel

Mamoun’s, located on St. Mark’s Place, is often a place you wind up in when it’s 3 am, you have just partied all night, you are in desperate need of some food and no one else is

open. Even up until it’s about to close this place is packed. A falafel here will cost you only $2.50, and on top of that it’s

pretty damn good! P.S DO NOT TRY THE HOT SAUCE UN-LESS YOU ARE READY TO SUFFER THIRD DEGREE BURNS

ON YOUR TONGUE/MOUTH.

Werd MuleSimply, We Must Thrive Immediately

On a budget! Well, I’m down with the pursuit of time with an attitude to love it. Hi, Alexander Johan Werdmuller von Elgg here, thanks a bucket load for cruising through just to here a view. Without money, we might as well be magnetically floating towards our immediate desires. Aimless, musical anarchy. Humans developed a barbarous apatite for order, and what better way to enjoy this craving than currency! Excellent, now that we have established some basis of harmony, lets chat about the infinite ways to explore New York City, on a budget!Number one, we need to function simply and comfortably as an organism. Lets breathe some oxygen. “Now wait right there, DJ WERD. Oxygen? The big O?” you got it. Slow, wonderfully animated lungs navigating our atmosphere out and into our physical container. Fun for the whole fam-ily, tell the world! The oxygen ocean, it’s what’s for winners! What do winners drink? Classically manufactured H20. You understand from your own experience, water with all its healing qualities, can be categorized into the joy department. Lets dance ahead to… great activities to manifest on a budget number three hundred and sixty two. Stand-ing on one foot. In many situations, we are waiting for a green light, pausing in line, elevating in a building or basically spacing out. You may have seen me in my space ship around SVA, practicing a calm stance simply by leading my weight with one hip. Believe in yourself, focus, feel a rhythm of right and left, settle in, until totally comfortable enough to lift the opposing leg. Pause and reflect. Now look at you, thriving a portion of today in favor of one posture under the oxygen ocean. It is great for a solo situation, fantastic as a collective.People are people, and I know that we are all one funky equal. People refuse to be lonely, and I am speaking from my hermit shell in 602 of the GW. The sound of bass frequencies through a wall brings me to… marvelous process for free number Three hundred and sixty three. Music sharing. Now we got oxygen and water for breakfast, balancing for brunch, lets treat ourselves to a potluck of sound exchange. I know we have homework to transpire and dollars to acquire, but here is the big but; we need to exchange opinions and views on phenomena, like sound, be-cause growth is paramount. WSVA radio is a valuable resource for these activities. Lets dedicate some clocks to celebrate our ears and our abil-ity to reflect on air displacement. Perhaps, turn some homework into these minutes. What are you waiting for! Of course, we need to hush this monologue. The world is ours, and holding a nickel may open our options. A budget is an adventure, to surpass the challenges on the topic, lets breathe some one-footed-tunes, ride the beat so we can rock it.
