INJURY AND ILLNESS ANNUAL REPORT
February 2016
Division of Administrative Services
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH AND SAFETY
Division of Administrative Services
ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH AND SAFETY
INJURY RATESThis report discusses the injuries experienced by Virginia Tech employees that required medical attention or caused lost time or restricted duty from work, known as “recordable.” The Total Recordable Injury Rate (TRIR) for 2014 has been calculated to allow comparison of our injury rates with the rates experienced on campus over the past five years, regardless of fluctuations in population. It also permits comparison with the rates of other colleges and universities, as reported by the US Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics. The Virginia Tech’s TRIR has been on an overall downward trend since 2008, the first year calculated. In addition, TRIR has been adjusted to reflect injuries that were not covered by workers’ compensation.
INJURY CAUSES AND TYPESWorkers’ compensation claim information is the data source for this report. An analysis of the year’s incidents allows Environmental Health and Safety (EHS) to focus loss control efforts on the types and causes of injuries occurring and the populations experiencing them. Risk factors that are involved in employee injuries can be controlled by training, engineering controls, administrative controls and/or other hazard mitigation methods. EHS use workers’ compensation claim information to develop specific programs for departments and colleges. EHS conducts specific training for Student Affairs, ARECs, Facilities, other departments and colleges based on the workers’ compensation claim information; thus, tailoring our training and communication efforts to the specific needs of our clients and stakeholders. In addition, EHS continues to collaborate with Dining Services, ARECs and facilities to promote and increase safety awareness. Training is adjusted yearly to address our top five injuries and risk occupations. Overall the University’s TRIR decreased by 33% since 2010.
SAFETY MANAGEMENTCurrent emphasis includes Risk Analysis, Training, Communication, and Monitoring. In 2014, EHS implemented the PHA (Preliminary Hazard Analysis) technique and FMEA (Failure Mode and Effect Analysis) for our clients who work in high risk areas. EHS has also implemented the Safety Management System (SMS). The SMS is a new online tool that helps principal investigators, lab managers, and supervisors comply with the requirements of the University’s Health and Safety Policy 1005. We conducted our Biennial Calibrations/Expectation meetings with Deans, Directors and Department heads in which we addressed any existing safety concerns as well as inform our clients on upcoming potential changes to regulations, policies or standards, and their implications based on national accident data and trends. In addition, we solicited information and expectations from our clients to better serve them and improve our communication and services.

ALTERNATIVE TRANSPORTATION
March 2016
We are seeking volunteers to help use distribute healthy breakfast foods, educational materials and giveaways to people traveling to campus using alter-native modes. Join us at one of the five major entry points to campus on April 18th to cheer them on! Email [email protected] to volunteer. PS- Volunteers need a healthy breakfast too, have one on us!
Numbers tell great stories and data from the Commuter Survey will be used to inform alternative transportation decisions on the Blacksburg campus. Links to the survey will be posted to our Face-book accounts, sent out through VT News and through university listserves!
Virginia Tech, in partnership with RIDE Solutions, wants you to accept the challenge to walk, bike, carpool, or take public transportation this April with the Clean Campus Challenge. There are two ways to participate in the Clean Campus Challenge: 1. Take the Clean Campus Pledge to try one
transportation option to be entered into weekly prize drawings.
2. Or, take the pledge and log your trips to earn additional entries. Each trip earns you addi-tional entries into our prize drawings!
Join or form a Clean Campus team and count your logged trips towards your team's total. At the end of the challenge, the team with the most logged clean trips wins! Winners will be revealed at the “Wheels and Reels” event on April 22nd! Information on how to sign up will be posted to our social media and can be found at the end of the upcoming Commuter Survey.
Join us to celebrate alternative transportation, and those who use it, with a bike-in movie! Before the movie begins we will reveal the winners of the Clean Commute Challenge and debut the newest numbers on support for alternative transportation from the Commute Challenge. We also hope to have a bike valet service in operation at the event and we need volunteers to run it effectively! The event will take place in the GLC auditorium on Friday, April 22nd, starting at 7:00pm. Email [email protected] to volunteer!
In February the office of Alternative Transportation launched a new campaign; "Heads Up Hokies".
The campaign is aimed at people on foot or bikes or in cars or buses and reminds them to keep their heads up! This means acting predictably and being aware of surroundings and others while traveling across campus. If we all keep our heads up while traveling, we can create a safer commu-nity for everyone!
Whether you’re a seasoned rider or a novice, join us at the Hokie Bike Hub for a forum about bike com-muting as a woman on the Virginia Tech campus! There will be a round table of women affiliated with the university to answer your questions. (Which you can submit ahead of time, via Facebook or ask on the day of.) There will also be time to socialize and enjoy refreshment with other women interested in bikes! The event will be held at the Hokie Bike Hub, from 4:30pm—6:00pm on Thursday, March the 24th. PS—We will also be posting weekly tips for women on bikes. Find them on our Facebook and Pinterest accounts
