For the purpose of greater understanding, step into our own church au-ditorium on a Wednesday evening choir rehearsal time. The choir mem-bers arrive for their 5:30 work session, i.e. Choir Rehearsal. The choir members come into the auditorium and go to the hallway on the right side of the church area to get their black choir work folders from our choir music holding unit for rehearsal time. This houses all of their cho-ral selections that will be rehearsed over the next several weeks in preparation for Sunday ministries. Each choir member has their own slot with their own music in it. They then bring that to the choir loft area for the rehearsal. The Music Librarian has already placed new music in each member’s slot to be picked up for that evening’s work time. After either an opening word of prayer or thoughts from our choir chaplain, the rehearsal work begins. The choir often uses the opening moments for a short vocalization to warm up the voices of the singers (use of non-word sounds like mah…lah…heh…loo) in either a scale or arpeggio setting. Each choir member marks their copy of music as to phrasing; interpre-tation markings, volume indicators, etc. Each Sunday's music is placed along with their own copy of the service order of music in their white folder for Sunday ministry. Typically six to eight tunes are worked on during each rehearsal so the choir is always working ahead for ministry presentation, as well as tak-ing into account the Christmas and Easter concert preparation times of special ministry. These special concert ministry preparation times often include a couple of extra rehearsals. Typically, each tune used by our choir will have had several rehearsal weeks before ministry presentation. For example, the choir opened our Carol Sing & Concert with an interesting treatment of Joy to the World. The instrumental part was particularly challenging. Pat Gustin played one accompaniment on the organ, Genenne Sexton played another on the piano and Loreen Young created the four-octave handbell choir on our keyboard. Then the choir had their four own parts (soprano alto ten-or bass], which none of the instruments were playing. There were many separate melodies happening at the same time in a contrapuntal (counterpoint) setting. It was a complicated arrangement, but the hard work of the choir and instrumentalists paid off! All did well.
Thanks for reading this and perhaps you now have a better understanding of what our dedi-cated choir and instrumentalists experience each week at the rehearsal. Allow these pieces of information to cause you to pray regularly for our choir and musicians. Our choir philoso-phy is this: "Ours is to minister...not to entertain." I would invite each of you to come by on a Wednesday evening and take in a rehearsal time with us; then stay for Pastor Kevin's excellent Bible Study and prayer time.
Satisfied in His Service, Paul Matthews
