The five learning motivations reportedunder the left-hand columns of Tabh" 6 showremarkably few significant affects on reported atten-tion. Where, in two cases only, the two sample Z~coefficients are significant, the Cramer's Vs areslight, indicating only a weak effect. In both casesthe effect was as might be expected. Those visitorsnot seeking to increase their general knowledgewere more likely not to have paid attention to thctexts about the scientists (24% compared to 13%stating the enhancement of their general knowledgeas a motivation). Those visitors for whom an interestin Discove O' was a motivation for visiting were morelikely than others to have carefully watched the filmabout Discot'ery~" later use (70% com par ed to 56c/, ).

Some non-learning motivations such as being onholiday, in contrast, had a greater impact on atten-tion to media, although individually the size of theseeffects are weak (Tabh" 6) and they arc not always inthe dircction expected. These effects tend to empha-size the importance of immediate settings as distrac-tions or enhancers to attention, for those on a social

family outing were less likely than others to havecarefully studied the holograms and texts aboutAntarctica (36% compared to 63%, and 36%compared to 64%). Similarly, of the minority oftourists visiting out of the need to accompanysomeone else, 60% had paid only casual attention tothe audio commentary, compared to 36% of others.However, consistency of direction was not foundtotally for more of those bringing visitors to theattraction as a motivatkm claimed to have paidcareful attention to the launch audio commentarythan others (51% compared to 33%). In contrast,those visiting out of the rather non-specific motiva-tion of a desire to vary their daily routine were morelikely than others to have ignored the text onAntarctica (36% compared to 13%).As none of the learning and non-learning motiva-tions have a general affect upon attention to media,care needs to bc taken not to read over much intothe associations noted in Tahh, 6 . It is safer t oconclude that at the attraction studied, reportedattention to media is largely irrespective of reportedmotivation.Age, however, can be shown to have had a moregeneral effect, aflecting attention to three media(Tabh, 7).
