MUST DO FOOD & DRINK

GONE FISHIN’There are plenty of fun foodie pockets to explore around Brisbane, but one of the biggest players in the game is South Brisbane’s Fish Lane. The carefully-curated eateries and bars in this micro-precinct each offer a point of difference – the menu at award-winning Gauge is always fresh and innovative, Big Roddy’s Rippin’ Rip Shack specialises in all things finger-lickin’ meat, Chu the Phat does Asian street eats with a high-end twist, Julius Pizzeria slings mouth-watering slices late into the night and Hello Please consistently dishes out the zestiest modern Vietnamese around. Dessert is more than taken care of with Gelato Messina, the deservedly hyped creator of some of Australia’s best iced confections. Fancy a nightcap? Be sure to swing by Maker for a custom cocktail creation or head to La Lune Wine Co to choose from more than 120 drops from all around the world on offer.

NEW

TALKING POINTSouth Bank is one of Brisbane’s main food and entertainment hubs, with the opening of mixed-use development Southpoint adding to the precinct’s already stellar dining offering. One of the most talked-about openings is Neil Perry’s Burger Project, the first of the chain to open in Queensland – built on a model of fast food with slow-food values, these buns have been causing a stir since day one. Another flagship business is Pourboy Espresso, a java joint that will please even the most discerning of coffee experts with its exciting blends and state-of the-art machinery. Rounding out the exciting newbies is The Pantry on Grey, an all-in space that acts as a specialist deli, butcher, florist, juicery and coffee shop – talk about a finger in every pie!

BOWLED OVERWhat happens when two food worlds collide? Welcome to Suki, a colourful concept that invites diners to choose between roll or bowl. This South Bank newcomer was inspired by the poke bowl trend that has been going crazy over in the US, drawing its origins from the vibrant raw fish salads of Hawaii. Sushi burritos are another innovation from Suki and they are just as delicious as you would guess – it’s pretty much a mammoth customised sushi roll that you need both hands to eat.

COAT OF MANY COLOURSOne of the biggest players in Brisbane’s diverse dining scene is undoubtedly the Coats Group. This collective is responsible for some of the city’s most respected eateries across a range of cuisine styles and vibes – whether it’s the unrivaled views at Eleven Rooftop Bar, the light and approachable dining at One Fifty, wholesome Italian eats at Il Molo or the riverfront breeze and laid-back atmosphere at The Jetty, the Coats Group knows how to deliver.

BE SURE TO TAKE A SECOND LOOK IN PADDINGTONSomething old and something new isn’t just an old wedding day adage – this perfectly describes the vibe of Paddington, a hub of culture and charm. You could spend days trawling for vintage wares in the pleasant abundance of antique and thrift stores, or get a dose of creativity by visiting the many art galleries on offer. Walk down Latrobe Terrace to experience a little bit of everything from the coolest cafes to the classiest restaurants, but be sure to keep your eyes peeled – your new favourite bar may actually be disguised as a worker’s cottage.

THE TA STE OF COMFORTIt’s hard to deny the appeal of slow-roasted food – how can one resist a decadent lamb shank with melt-in-your-mouth meat that practically falls off the bone? Arrosto Bar and Grill knows this game well, featuring a menu packed with hearty dishes that take an Italian and Spanish twist. The wholesome fare matches the vibe of the venue, where the warm service and rustic interiors will have you feeling all sorts of cosy. 2/257 Given Tce | 07 3148 8764
