ISTEP
Do you have a 3rd, 4th or 5th grader? If so, ISTEP and IREAD are just around the corner! ISTEP is administered
in two different windows: February 29-March 11 and April 18-May 6. All 3rd grade students will participate
in IREAD during the week of March 14-March 18.
Please make sure not to schedule any appointments for your child during the school day during the testing
windows. Also, it is very important for your child to be on time to school each day. Many tests start first thing in the morning. Students cannot enter the classroom if
a test has started.
The best way to help your child do well on these tests is to have a positive attitude and send your child to
school on time with a healthy breakfast.

The Smoky Row Drama Club will be presenting The Lion King on February 26 at 7:00 PM and February 27 at 1:00 PM. Tickets are required for entry at both shows. Due to the large cast size and capacity of the auditorium, seating is limited. The tickets were in high demand; as a result the two performances are sold out. However, there will be
a special performance just for the Smoky Row students during the school day on Friday, February 26. Thank you for your understanding.
The Smoky Row School Carnival has been moved to Friday, April 29. The event will
begin at 5:30 and we hope to take advantage of some nice spring weather.
NEW! CCS RECYCLING
POLICY
NEW RECYCLING POLICY AT CARMEL CLAY SCHOOLS After much thought and careful consideration, Carmel Clay Schools has begun a new recycling program throughout the district. Any waste in the classrooms will be placed in the recycle dumpster. The thought behind this idea is that the contamination level will be minimal, but the quantity of items recycled will increase. Exceptions will be made, of course, if food waste is in the classroom waste bins. In the cafeterias, all
items will still need to be sorted, as has been the case in recent years. The goal is for
all schools to be implementing this program by the end of the school year.
NEW! PUP RUNNING TRACK SEASON
Open registration for the 2016 Pup Running Track Season begins March 1st and closes at 11:59 pm on April 1st. Absolutely no late registration is accepted. Participation is
open to ALL Carmel Clay School students with a cost of $8 to participate. Team t-shirts are optional with an additional cost of $7. For more information, visit the Pup Running
Inc. website at www.puprunning.org. The spring track seasons consists of 100 and 400 meter dashes, typically one practice
a week which can begin the week of April 10th. The meets will begin at 5:30 pm on April 28th (Carmel Middle School), May 5th (Carmel Middle School) and May 12th
(Carmel High School).
NEW! PUP RUNNING COACH
NEEDED
Registration will soon be open for the 2016 track season for Pup Running. Smoky Row needs a coach (co-coaching is great!). If you are interested in this volunteer position, please contact Maria Gottlieb at [email protected] and the front office
staff at Smoky Row. Practices are usually held once weekly immediately after school with 3 meets on Thursdays: April 28th (Carmel Middle School), May 5th (Carmel
Midddle School) and May 12th (Carmel High School).
NEW! SPRING BOOK FAIR
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED
The Spring Scholastic Book Fair is approaching and we need many volunteers. On Friday, March 18th we need volunteers to help set up the book fair. We also need volunteers from March 21st – March 25th, who are willing to come in and work the
cash register, replenish books, help students browse, and eventually pack up the fair on the afternoon of the 25th. Volunteers are needed for many 2 hours shifts
throughout the fair, but even an hour of our time is a big help! If you are interested in volunteering during this fun event, please visit Sign-up Genius using the following link:

BOX TOPS UPDATE
Did you know: Last year Smoky Row earned $1,790.00 in Box Top collecting.....This year we are well on our way and have earned $1,343.50! We collect year round and receive two checks a year. The cut off for this year's earnings is the end of February. Please send in any Box Tops that you have collected this month. Any you submit will
also help your child's class possibly win the classroom contest for an ice cream sundae
party or extra recess. Thanks to everyone who clips Box Tops!
PENNIES FOR PATIENTS
Check your couch cushions! It's time for Pennies for Patients, benefiting the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Students may bring in their coins between February 15-26 and deposit them in their grade level pods. The grade level that donates the most money will decide which staff members participate in a "dare" at the school-wide
carnival!
