    1. Introduction

Singapore The Myopia Capital of the World

ave your ever wondered why the incidence of myopia in Singapore is thehighest in the world 80% of the population aged 16 onwards suffersfrom myopia, compared to an estimated 25% in America, Australia,Europe and China. Hong Kong, Japan, Taiwan, Malaysia and Singaporeare the top five countries in the world with the highest incidence of

myopia (with Singapore holding the dubious record!)

    1.1 Myopia Root Cause

Does the root cause lie in our food, climate, classroom, genes, habits or lifestyle?

Severe myopia (10 diopter or more) may cause retinaldetachment which can lead to blindness. Our children arestarting to wear prescription glasses as early as Primary One.They are also upgrading their glasses to higher-powered pairsevery few months as they cope with the school workload, aswell as the near-point vision stress generated by thecomputer games, Playstations, Xboxes, and Gameboys. Is theresomething we can do to solve this serious problem? Or do weaccept what our eye-care professionals are telling us eyesight deterioration is partof growing up in Singapore, and there is nothing one can do to reverse or alleviatethe problem in the nation?

    1.2 The Bates Method

Thank God that there is hope for poor eyesight. The BatesMethod Workshop for Eyesight Improvement achieves bettereyesight without glasses, surgery, medication or risk. Thousandsof people around the world have benefitted from the 85-year-oldBates Method. It is definitely a better and more effectivealternative to glasses in eliminating myopia, astigmatism and

    presbyopia (long-sightedness).

The Vision Therapy Eyewear, is a cost-effective way to get started in the BatesMethod. Dr William Bates after examining 30,000 pairs of eyes per year back thenin the 1900s, concluded that prescription glasses is part of the problem, and goingwithout the eye-crutches will bring vision therapy benefits to patients. However, the Bates Method is not a substitute to visiting an eye-care professional when onesuffers from medically-related vision challenges.

    2. Traditional View vs Dr Bates

    View

Wear your glasses all the time or your eyesight will worsen true or false?

he traditional eye-care industry has been preaching: 1. Wear your glasses allthe time or your eyesight will worsen. 2. There is no cure for myopia (short-sightedness), astigmatism or presbyopia (long-sightedness). 3. Glasses is theonly non-surgical solution to help you see clearly. 4. Lasik surgery is theonly hope if one wants to get rid of prescription glasses, although, as in all

surgeries, it comes with a risk that your eyesight may be irreversibly damaged. Youwould have to sign away all rights to sue your ophthalmologist since your went for thesurgery fully aware of all the risks and benefits.

Compares the Traditional View and Dr Bates View regarding myopia, astigmatism and presbyopia

    2.1 Warped eyeball

Todayseye-care professionals believe that the shape of the eyeball, including theeye lens are warped, lengthened, or elongated. Dr Bates believed that every part ofour body is adaptive, can self-heal, and is designed to perform efficiently andholistically.

    2.2 Permanent damage

Our eye-care professionals believe that there is nothing one can do to reversemyopia, astigmatism or presbyopia. The eyeball is already irreversibly warped. DrBates believed that vision therapy including eye-mind training can restore normal orperfect eyesight. Dr Bates had seen many cases where his patients went withoutglasses against his orders, and their vision was restored to normal.

    2.3 Surgery

Since the eyeball is already permanently damaged, surgery is the only solution to getback perfect vision. However, there is a risk associated with any surgery, includingLasik. Most eye doctors who are performing the lasik surgery are still wearing

glasses themselves. Lasik surgery was invented less than eleven years ago, and thelong-term effects are still unknown. Besides, the root cause of vision challenges(myopia, astigmatism or presbyopia) has not been addressed. Eyesight deteriorationcan occur after Lasik surgery if the patient continues to stare at the computer screenor reading voluminously non-stop for long hours. By contrast, Dr Bates believedthat one can maintain perfect vision for near and far, if one maintains good visionhabits. Good vision habits, not eye exercises, promotes relaxed use of the visionsystem, hence normal perfect vision is maintained. Ask someone you know whohas perfect vision if he or she needs to do anything special to maintain perfectvision. The answer is always nothing.

    2.4 Prescription Glasses

Eye-care professionals encourage you to wear your glasses all day. Take them off,and your vision will worsen. Why does my vision continue to worsen after wearingthe glasses? Why do my kids complain that they cannot see clearly anymore a fewmonths after getting their new glasses? They need higher-powered glasses everycouple of months. Dr Bates believed that glasses is part of the problem. They arelike eye-crutches. You become totally dependent on them. You feel insecurewithout them.

However, when you remove your glasses, and give yourself a little time (as short as1 hour), you will find that your body, eyes and mind are constantly makingadjustments to help you see better. Vision improves. Therefore, Dr Bates wrote hisperennial best-seller in 1919, Perfect Sight Without Glasses. Today, you will stillbe able to buy Dr Bates book, Better Eyesight Without Glasses at your localbookstores.

    2.4.1 Why Glasses Dont Help

Glasses are fitted for 20 feet or 6m. It is the most effective (translated tomean the most powerful pair) for all distances from 1 feet to 20 feet and

    5

beyond. Most likely, you will feel giddy and may even suffer a headache

when you first put on the newly prescribed pair of glasses. Your opticianwill tell you that you will get used to it. Sure enough, your body adaptsand adjusts to help you cope with the strong pair of crutches for youreyes. When used for reading at 1 feet for example, the glasses are twentytimes too strong (20 feet / 1 feet) since they have a fixed focal length, unlike the natural eye lens which have a variable focal length (andtherefore doesnt have the 20-times-too-strong problem when doingclose work). When watching TV / computer at 4 feet, the glasses are 5times too strong. The strain caused by these glasses is one of the majorcontributing factors to progressive myopia, astigmatism and presbyopia.(changing higher-powered lens frequently).

Dr Bates on the other hand encouraged that you either go without glassescompletely, without straining to see in the process, or have lower poweredglasses. Strictly speaking, to be precise, have 20 pairs of glasses with differentpower for different distances. When working on the computer or reading, 25to 50 percent (varies, since every individual is different) of your currentprescription on your glasses will do just fine.

    2.5 Root Cause

Have you ever asked your eye-care professional, Why do I or my kids suffer frommyopia, astigmatism or presbyopia? The explanation will likely be: a) it is part of

growing up (like your height), b) it is probably your genes (your parents wearglasses), or c) you have been putting too much strain on your vision system (toomuch reading, computer games, Gameboys, TV-watching).

Dr Bates believed that we are all born with perfect vision, and the root cause is aresult of poor vision habits resulting in excessive stress and strain in our visionsystem. If a boy plays computer games on the PC or TV several hours non-stop aday, his vision is likely to be less-than-perfect. Reading, homework and otheractivities that create excessive near-point stress are key factors that contribute tovision challenges.

Does that mean we stop all these activities and dont going to school or work? Dr

Bates teaches the use of ones vision system with maximum relaxation andminimum stress and strain. The techniques become good vision habits. Theyautomatically become part of you, used all-day and unconsciously. They are not eyeexercises.

    3. Vision Therapy Eyewear How

    They Work

The scientific pin-hole effect helps one see clearly without prescription glasses oreye crutches, and brings about vision therapy benefits resulting in eyesightimprovement.

ight travels in straight lines. They dont bend around pin-holes, resulting infewer light rays traveling through the holes. A sharpened image is formedon the retinal when one wears a pair of pin-hole glasses or Vision TherapyEyewear.

    3.1 Application to Vision Challenges

The Vision Therapy Eyewear can help myopic, astigmatic and presbyopic adultsand children see better without prescription glasses. The Eyewear works best as asubstitute to glasses with a diopter of less than 3.0 (or 300 degrees, minus or plusdiopter). For diopters between 3.0 to 5.0, using the Eyewear for reading orcomputer use (not reading off fine prints far away) may be suitable for someindividuals. Beyond 5.0 diopter, the Eyewear is not likely to be useful. In this case,stepped-down glasses are more suitable, especially when used in conjunction withvision therapy.

    3.2 Children

For children below the age of 5, the Eyewear may not be suitable unless the childfully understands its application and uses it appropriately.

If the Eyewear is to be worn in class, it is best for the parent to write in advance tothe teacher explaining why your child is using the strange looking black glasses withpin-holes in them. They are used as a substitute to prescription glasses as part of avision therapy program, and not trying to look cool in class.

Depending of your childs degree of myopia or/andastigmatism, prescription glasses may sometimes beuseful if the child needs to see more challengingprints or objects very far away. In this case, instead ofstraining to see, prescription glasses worn during ashort time, instead of the Eyewear, will be moreappropriate. As a rough rule-of-thumb, the Eyewear

can substitute very adequately, a pair of glasses with diopter of 1.0 to 1.75. Everyindividual is different, and it is best for the child to try out the Eyewear andcompare it with the prescription glasses for best results. It is important to remind

the child never to strain to see in any circumstances, or wear the Eyewear outdoors(since peripheral vision is limited or obstructed by the pin-holes).

    4. Vision Therapy Eyewear

    Benefits

Shortsighted, longsighted, and astigmatic adults and children can now enjoynatural vision therapy to achieve better eyesight without surgery, medication orrisk.

lasses cause tremendous strain contributing to further eyesightdeterioration. Nobody wore glasses and regain perfect vision. The VisionTherapy Eyewear is an effective alternative to glasses, without all thedisadvantages associated with prescription glasses. The major benefits ofthe Vision Therapy Eyewear are:

4.1 Effective substitute to prescription glasses

The Eyewear, using the pin-hole principle helps you see clearly near (forlongsightedness) and far (shortsightedness) without strain and stress. As a rule-of-thumb (since every individual is different), if the glasses diopter is less than 3.0, theEyewear works well in most circumstances (except when outdoors or driving avehicle). For individuals with glasses diopter between 3.0 and 5.0, the Eyewear mayhelp when reading, computer work or even TV watching.

    4.2 Eliminates the 20-times-too-strong problem

There is no 20 times over-powered prescription glasses or eye-crutches to confusethe eye and the mind especially during activities that cause a lot of near-point stress(reading, TV, computer for example). The Eyewear therefore eliminates the strainand stress caused by glasses. Going without glasses safely and without straining tosee is a highly recommended habit.

4.3 Prevents progressive myopia, astigmatism, and presbyopia

Since the major contributing factor to progressive vision challenges is stress andstrain caused by frequent wearing of prescription glasses during near work, the

elimination of glasses also reduces the probability of upgrading to higher-powered

    lenses.

    4.4 Rediscover natural vision

The Eyewear gives you confidence to go without the eye-crutches, and effectivelyencourages the use of your natural vision ability to see clearly far and near. This isanalogous to physio-therapy. This helps you to break your dependence and relianceon the prescription glasses. Your eye, mind and body will learn how to coordinateand adapt optimally to bring about improved vision every day.

    Central Vision Habit

The Eyewear promotes a very important vision habit taught by Dr Bates centralization, or central vision. This is a key vision habit to improved and perfecteyesight. Centralisation is the most relaxing way to use your vision system, especiallyduring close work. Relaxed vision obviously eliminates the stress and strain.

    10

    5. Vision Therapy Eyewear

    How to Use

The objective of the Eyewear is to encourage inculcation of the CentralVision habit and develop the confidence to go without glasses.

o not use the Eyewear outdoors. The pin-holes block out the peripheralor side-vision and can be dangerous when crossing the street or playingoutdoors. There should be absolutely no driving or operating anymachinery that can cause harm to the Eyewear wearer and peoplenearby. The Eyewear are not sunglasses. They do not protect you from

UV light. Do not wear the Eyewear all day long.

    5.1 Substitute Glasses with Eyewear

Wear them when you are reading or watching TV or reading/copying informationoff the board or slides. If you are mildly myopic, astigmatic, or presbyopic, try to gowithout glasses whenever it is safe and practical, without straining to see. Straincauses vision to worsen. When you need to see clearly indoors, use the Eyewear as asubstitute. If the Eyewear is not practical, then revert to your older and lower-powered glasses. If the lower-powered glasses still does not do the job, then useyour fully-powered pair of glasses. There should be no straining, squinting or anystruggle to see in the above process.

    5.2 Central Vision Habit

There is only one way to see clearly when wearing the Eyewear look through onepin-hole each eye centrally. You will need to move your head slightly and constantlyin order to optimally align your central vision and the pin-hole in front of yourpupils, as you outline the object that you are seeing. This is how the Eyewear helpsinculcate the Central Vision habit. For example, when reading with the Eyewear, your head needs to be making slight head movements (left-to-right) seeing centrallythrough the pin-holes. When you are not wearing the Eyewear, you should

continue to see with the central vision habit. This is the most relaxing way to use

your vision system to see clearly, and without stress and strain.

    5.3 Vision Breaks

You should take a vision break for 1-2 minutes every 30-40 minutes of near worksuch as reading, computer work, playing computer games, including Gameboys andhandheld games. A vision break is to look at far away objects, preferably at nature, and multi-coloured natural surroundings. You can put away your work, and take awalk, or close your eyes and relax for a moment. This activity helps to minimizevision-stress.

    5.4 Going Without Glasses

Natural vision therapy starts to take place when you go without glasses. TheEyewear helps you see better, like your glasses, minus the disadvantages ofprescription glasses (over-powered when performing nearer work). Therefore, afterlearning and inculcating the central vision habit into your lifestyle, and goingwithout your glasses, your vision must start to improve. Your vision does notimprove more by wearing the Eyewear for long periods. It is how often you gowithout glasses and using your natural vision (unaided) in a relaxed manner thatmaintains normal and perfect vision.

    5.5 Eyecharts

Download both the Near and Far (Snellen) eyecharts from our website. Use themto gauge your vision improvement on a daily basis. Print the charts on A4 sizepaper on the best quality resolution on your home printer, without scaling the sizeof the image.

    5.5.1 Far Chart

For myopic and astigmatic individuals, the Far Eyechartis a useful tool to measure your vision improvement.Place the Far Eyechart exactly 20 feet or 6 m away, preferably stuck on a wall, and well-illuminated with a

lamp that is at least 100W bright (daylight, whitecolour). Keep this setup fixed without moving the chartor lamp. Note the letters on the Chart you can seecomfortably and clearly (at least 75% clarity) withoutwearing glasses or Vision Therapy Eyewear. As yourvision improves, you should be able to see further down

the Chart with all things being equal. Remember to downgrade your glassesdiopter in the improvement process. A person with perfect vision can see the6/4.5 line of letters, VISIONTHERAPY unaided.

    5.5.1 Near Chart

Likewise for the Near Chart (if you arepresbyopic/longsighted), place it 14 inches or 36cmaway with the same kind of illumination describedabove. The chart can be held up or stuck on a wall orbook stand. Note the line of letters seen mostcomfortably without reading or progressive glasses. When your vision improves, you will be able to seefarther down the chart. A person with perfect nearvision should have no problem making out letters on

line 10, and with a little strain even line 11 and 12. When your visionimproves, please reduce the prescription in your glasses. This way, you will be

adapting to a lesser-powered lens as your progress in your visionimprovement journey.

    6. When Vision Improves

Reduce your glasses prescription as your vision improves.

eek out a Behavioural Optician when your vision improves. Your favouriteOptician maybe able to dispense stepped-down glasses in tandem with yourvision improvement, although majority of the opticians in Hong Kongsubscribe to the Traditional View (that there is no cure for myopia due to thepermanent elongation of eyeball shape) in addressing vision challenges.

    6.1 Stepped-down Glasses

Natural Vision Centre Singapore specializes in stepped-down glasses as we help ourcustomers implement the Bates Method. We are planning similar Centres inMalaysia and Hong Kong in the next 6 months.

    6.2 The Bates Method Workshop

If you are interested to find out more about the Bates Method Workshop forEyesight Improvement (advanced eye-mind training), please obtain a copy of theWorkshop Brochure online at our website. Bates Method Workshop customers goon a package with life-time consulting and implementation support (includingimmediate family members) by investing in a one-time fee upfront.

    7. Conclusion

Can you name any part of your body (other than your vision system) thatsuffers a permanent damage when you are less than 10 years old?

ingapore is likely to remain the myopia capital of the world if our assumptionsare: 1. there is no reversal of myopia, astigmatism or presbyopia, 2. there isnothing you can do to prevent myopia since we have inherited the weak ordamaged vision system, 3. glasses are to be worn all the time, and 4. for thevery brave individuals, Lasik surgery can improve your vision to near perfect.

Alternatively, consider the following propositions by Dr William Bates:

1.Your vision system is never permanently damaged, but vision therapy andeye-mind training can restore normal and perfect vision

    2. Glasses is part of the problem

    3. Go without glasses whenever possible safely and pragmatically

    4. Never strain to see, but use aids such as Vision Therapy Eyewear or stepped-down glasses

    5. Inculcate key vision habits such as Centralisation into your lifestyle so thatvision is relaxed, without stress and strain which is the root cause of mostvision challenges

We, at Natural Vision Centre, believe that God hand-crafted each of us to be uniquely(for example your thumb-print uniquely identifies you against billions of people in theworld) and wonderfully made. Every part of our body is perfect and whole, and weought to look after it sensibly so that it can last us a lifetime, and not fail us (withirreversible permanent damage) when we enter Kindergarten or Primary One. We cancertainly see perfectly without glasses, naturally without surgery, medication or risk.

We hope you have benefited from this Manual and look forward to hear from youabout your vision improvement experiences. You can reach us [email protected]

8.1Who and when were the Vision Therapy Eyewear or Pinholeglasses invented?a. It is not known who invented the pinhole glasses, but the scientific principles ofpinhole effects (light travels in straight lines) were discovered many centuries ago.Pinhole glasses are widely sold in America, Europe and Australia as substitutes to

prescription glasses since the 1950s at least.b. Sir David Brewster, a Scottish scientist, was one of the first to make pinholephotographs in the 1850s.

    8.2 What are XS, S, M and L models?

    a. Think of them as T-shirt sizes. XS-extra small, usually for children, L-large forbigger-size individuals, and so on.b. The pin-holes are the same in all models. There is no prescription in them.

8.3 What is the benefit of the Eyewear?

    a. It helps relief strain and stress caused by prescription glasses, and yet enabling

clearer vision.b. Promotes an important vision habit to perfect vision central vision, since youcan see clearly only straight ahead centrally.c. Trains your mind, eyes and muscles to see without dependence on yourprescription eye crutches.
