    Abstract of Project:

The present work has been undertaken to study the feasibility of storing solar energyusing Phase Change Materials (PCMs) and utilizing this energy to heat water fordomestic purposes during nighttime

The system consists of two simultaneously functioning heat-absorbing units.

One of them is a solar water heater and the other a heat storage unit consisting ofPCM (paraffin).

The storage unit utilizes small cylinders, made of aluminum, filled with paraffin waxas the heat storage medium. It also consists of a Solar Collector to absorb solar heat. Atthe start of the day the storage unit is filled with water completely

This water is made to circulate between the heating panel (Solar collector) and thePCMs. The water in the storage unit receives heat form the heating panel and transfers itto the PCM.

The PCM undergoes a phase change by absorbing latent heat, excess heatbeing stored as sensible heat.

And latent heat stored in P.C.M. is dissipate the energy whenever systemwants during night times

Working principle of our project is working on Latent heat becausecontinuously phase change occurs of Paraffin Wax.

    Properties of Paraffin Wax :

    White

    Odorless

    Test less

    Waxy solid

    with a typical melting point between about 47 C to 64 C ( 116.6F to147.2F)

    having a density of around 0.9 g/cm3

    It is insoluble in water

Pure paraffin wax is an excellent electrical insulator

The PCM continues to absorb heat without a significant raise in temperature until

all the material is transformed to the liquid phase. When the ambient temperature

around a liquid material falls, the PCM solidifies, releasing its stored latent heat. A

large number of PCMs are available in any required temperature range from -5 up

to 190oC .Within the human comfort range of 20 to 30C, some PCMs are very

    effective.

CONCLUSION:1) Store latent heat unlike other solar heating system

    2) Heat storage capacity is large3) More hot water is obtained with same capacity4) Constant hot water at 50 degree Celsius is obtained

    5) No much variation in temperature is observed even when cold water is added6) It is more efficient than other system4) It is more advantages where the space restriction limits larger thermal storage units

in direct gain or sunspace passive solar system.
