The first quarter went very well at Winters Mill and the second quarter is off to a great start. Last Friday, November 20 we held our Academic Letter ceremony. At this event 38 students received their academic letter. The academic letter is truly an accomplishment that students earn due to outstanding academic achievement over time. Students have to have A’s, B’s or P’s in all of their courses for eight consecutive marking periods. That is the type of academic consistency that will serve these students well as they apply to colleges, trade schools and technical schools. Our second parent conference night of the year is scheduled for Thursday evening; December 1 from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Parents can call the main office to schedule appointments. Even if your students are doing well academically, it is always beneficial to get the opportunity to meet with your student’s teacher face to face. If your student is struggling academically, then I urge you to schedule conferences. Lastly, I would like to remind parents that Winters Mill High School is responsible for providing supervision for 30 minutes after school or school- sponsored events end. This means that it is vital that students either ride the bus home after school or have a ride arrive in a timely manner after events end. Students should not stay after school to “hang around” or to attend a sporting event that begins hours after school has ended. Students should only stay after school for team, drama or musical practices, club meetings, to work with a teacher, or for off-season conditioning monitored by a coach. Indoor sporting events necessitate that our custodians clear the lobby after school so that they can clean and set up for the event. If students are still sitting in the lobby at this point, they will be asked to wait outside. The last thing we want to do is send students out into the cold, but we may not have a choice if students are still here. Please ensure that your students are staying after school for appropriate reasons, and then being picked up in a timely manner. Thank you for your support on this issue. Sincerely, Eric A. VISION

Winters Mill is a school community where all activities focus on learning, achievement, and involvement. Rigor, relevance, and relationships are the foundations for our success. It is a place where involvement breeds excitement for learning as we develop the leaders of tomorrow.

MISSION

Winters Mill High School creates a rigorous learning environment where all students will develop their individual potential to become college and career ready in a global society.

Dear Students, Parents, and Supporters of Winters Mill High School,

I hope everyone is receiving this newsletter after enjoying a wonderful Thanksgiving break. The first quarter went very well at Winters Mill and the second quarter is off to a great start. Last Friday, November 20 we held our Academic Letter ceremony. At this event 38 students received their academic letter.

CONFERENCE NIGHT The second Winters Mill parent conference night this year is Thursday, December 1st from 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. This is a great time to get updated on your student’s progress. Please contact the main office at (410) 386-1500 with the names of the teachers you would like to meet with and we will schedule your appointments.

In addition to conferences on December 1st, Winters Mill will also be offering a parent information session on standardized testing in the state of Maryland and how it will impact your child. We will be sharing information that will help improve your understanding of the standardized testing that is required by the Maryland State Department of Education. The session will last about 30 minutes and will include time for questions. Our goal is to provide parents with a general overview of the ever changing state testing requirements so that everyone is comfortable helping their child navigate the requirements as they progress through high school. The session will begin at 6:00 p.m. in the auditorium.

Pick-up Table

We have a table set up in the cafeteria for students to pick up items such as lunches, clothing items, etc. that are brought in for them. Items such as eye glasses, money, wallets, purses, etc. will be kept in the main office. It is the student’s responsibility to pick up the item as we cannot interrupt the teachers unless it is an emergency. Please be sure to write your student’s name on the item and communicate with your student that you are bringing the item in for them.

Dismissal - Student Pick Up

This a reminder to please only pick-up your student in the student parking lot at dismissal time. You are not allowed to pick up your student in the parking lot in the front of the building at dismissal time as only buses are allowed in the front lot at that time.

Thank you!

ABSENT? Parents are reminded that

absences & late arrivals should be reported to the school by e-mailing [email protected] or by calling 410-386-1500.

If you know in advance that your student will be absent (college visits, family events, etc…) they must bring in a note prior to their absence to be approved by administration.

Also, if your student will be leaving early from school, please have them bring a note to the attendance window before classes that day.

WINTERS MILL ATHLETICS NEWSLETTER November, 2016

The athletes and coaches of Winters Mill are to be commended for putting forth another outstanding effort this fall! Many life long lessons were learned that will follow our athletes throughout their lives.

A few items for your consideration from the Athletic Department for the winter season:

`CCPS is requiring each athlete to complete the Computerized Concussion Assessment Test (ImPACT). The ImPACT test is good for two years from the initial baseline test date. The test will take approximately 30 minutes and must be administered by our Athletic Trainer with the coach present. Your child’s coach will be contacting them to set up a date and time for the test. Athletes not haven taken the test by the first day of tryouts will not be allowed to practice. The test is optional for winter track athletes with the exception of high jumpers and pole vaulters. Two (2) forms (1. Concussion Information Sheet and 2. Sports Concussion Testing Program and Release of Information) must be read and signed prior to the test (even track athletes must return the signed forms). The forms can be found at http://www.carrollk12.org/schools/high/athletics/default.asp or in the main office at Winters Mill.

Athletes are reminded that when their practice is over, if they decide to stay for a contest being held that evening, they must pay the admission.

Our home varsity events in the winter do not begin until 5:30 or 6:00, so PLEASE go home first and then return for the games. We typically have large numbers of kids hanging out getting very bored (and possibly getting in trouble!) while waiting for the game to begin. I know rides can be difficult, but we need to keep the hallways cleared until game time.

Athletic Fee: as most of you probably are aware, there is a $105 fee per season to participate in athletics in Carroll County. There is a policy in effect where the maximum a family can pay is $150 for a particular season. This is a slight price break for those families who have more than one athlete participating per season. Checks should be made out to: Winters Mill H.S.. Laine Janoski in the main office will be our contact to hand in the fee (a reminder that this must be done BEFORE the first official contest in order to be eligible). Please mark down in the “note” space on your check your athlete’s name and which sport they are participating in. Particularly if the $150 fee is paid for more than one athlete.

* Check out www.carrollcountyathleticleague.org for the latest schedules and any changes. You can also get up to the minute notices of any postponements and directions to the games by signing up for notifications on the Winters Mill page.

* Those of you who have helped our Athletic Boosters in the concessions stands – Thank you very much! The Boosters have been doing their usual outstanding job and they can’t do it without everyone helping! The Winter Sports teams will need that continued support!!

I do have one area of concern. I have been noticing negative comments during games directed at officials as well as opposing players and coaches. In today’s society we as adults need to be demonstrating positive behavior as an example to our athletes. It is becoming a concern throughout the County and it will become a point of emphasis from this point on. Carroll County’s Code of Conduct states that if any fan demonstrates inappropriate behavior at a contest, they will be asked to leave the site. I will first talk with the individual(s) about their behavior and if it continues, they will be asked to leave the site. I hope that it will not get to that point and I ask that all of the Winters Mill Enthusiasts help in supporting a positive climate.

Many of these teams are ranked in the state and made post-season appearances in 2016. Wrestling begins at 4 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 9th and continues all day Saturday, Dec. 10th, with new rounds starting every hour and a half. Come out and support Carroll County Wrestling!

Guidelines for Honoring the Game The key to preventing adult misbehavior in high school sports is a high school sports culture in which all involved "Honor the Game." Honoring the Game gets to the ROOTS of the matter and involves respect for the Rules, Opponents, Officials, Teammates and one's Self. You don't bend the rules to win. You understand that a worthy opponent is a gift that forces you to play to your highest potential. You show respect for officials even when you disagree. You refuse to do anything that embarrasses your team. You live up to your own standards even if others don't. Here are ways that parents can create a positive high school sports culture so that young adults will have fun and learn positive character traits to last a lifetime. Before the Game: 1. Make a commitment to Honor the Game in action and language no matter what others may do. Tell your child before each game that you are proud of him or her regardless of how well he or she plays. During the Game:

1. Fill your children's "Emotional Tank" through praise and positive recognition so they can play their very best.

2. Don't give instructions to your child during the game. Let the coach correct player mistakes.

3. Cheer good plays by both teams (this is advanced behavior!)

4. Mention good calls by the official to other parents.

5. If an official makes a "bad" call against your team? Honor the Game - BE SILENT!

6. If another parent on your team yells at an official? Gently remind him or her to Honor the Game.

7. Don't do anything in the heat of the moment that you will regret after the game. Ask yourself, "Will this embarrass my child or the team?" Remember to have fun! Enjoy the game. After the Game:

1. Thank the officials for doing a difficult job for little or no pay.

2. Thank the coaches for their commitment and effort.

3. Don't give advice. Instead ask your child what he or she thought about the game and then LISTEN. Listening fills Emotional Tanks. Tell your child again that you are proud of him or her, whether the team won or lost.

SCHOOL BUS DRIVERS NEEDED!!

Are you looking for a rewarding career opportunity, possibly within close proximity to your residence, work days that provide you the same school holidays as your student(s), and perhaps an opportunity to transport your own children and save on the cost of daycare? If you like to be around children/ students and believe you can be a positive role model, perhaps you should give thought to driving a yel-low school bus for the Carroll County Public Schools.

School bus drivers are the first and last persons representing our school system that interact with students every school day. Driving a school bus is not as hard as you might think. It does require a commercial driver’s license and approxi-mately thirty (30) hours of paid training on average, but the CCPS Transportation Services Department driver instructors will help you acquire the necessary skills and knowledge needed to be a successful school bus driver.

If you have a clean driving record with no prior criminal record, please consider contacting Mrs. Dianne Grote, President of the Carroll County School Bus Con-tractors Association at 410-848-4649 or 410-876-7530, ext. 101. There are sever-al bus contractors currently looking for drivers.

“Class of 2019”

The Class of 2019 would like to send a huge THANK YOU to Car-los and The Westminster Olive Garden Staff for supporting our fundraiser dinner.

Winters Mill High School is conducting a shoe drive from De-cember through April to raise funds for CCPS High School Au-tism Program. Winters Mill will earn funds based on the to-tal weight of the shoes collected as Funds2Orgs will pur-chase all of the donated footwear. Those dollars will benefit CCPS High School Autism program. Anyone can help by do-nating gently worn, used or new shoes directly to Winters Mill High School. All donated shoes will then be redistributed throughout the Funds2Orgs network of microenterprise partners in develop-ing nations. Funds2Orgs helps impoverished people start, maintain and grow businesses in countries such as Haiti, Honduras and other nations in Central America and Africa. Proceeds from the shoe sales are used to feed, clothe and house their families. One budding entrepreneur in Haiti even earned enough to send to her son to law school. “We are excited about our shoe drive," said Bobbi Hol-lingsworth, Career Connection Coordinator. "We know that most people have extra shoes in their closets they would like donate to us and help those less fortunate become self-sufficient. It’s a win-win for everyone”. By donating gently worn, used and new shoes to the Winters Mill High School, the shoes will be given a second chance and make a difference in peoples lives.
