The Goal: Maturity

“let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity” Hebrews 6:1

“…to prepare God's people for

works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of

God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.” Ephesians 4:12-13

CONVERTED by the GOSPEL – Believing the good news of Jesus Christ that he provides complete FORGIVENESS and perfect righteousness to ALL who receive Him as LORD

CONSISTENT in the WORD – Investing time daily to read and understand God’s blue print and will for our lives so that we can know the TRUTH

CONSTANT in PRAYER – Interacting and talking with God on a regular basis so that we can receive His POWER and be faithful and fruitful

COMMITTED to FELLOWSHIP – Becoming involved in a Bible believing, teaching, and obeying church so that believer’s are equipped towards MATURITY (to be like Christ)

COURAGEOUS in WITNESSING – Obeying Christ’s command to GO make disciples by sharing the message of the gospel and showing the LOVE of Jesus Christ to everyone we meet

CONTINUOUS in WORSHIP – Honoring the Lord and giving Him praise and GLORY in everything we do and say

CONTAGIOUS CHRISTIAN – Seeing others saved, baptized, and growing in their walk with Christ as we pass the torch of truth to others through EVANGELISM and DISCIPLESHIP

Colossians 1:28 “We proclaim Him, admonishing every man and teaching every man with all wisdom, so that we may present every man mature in Christ.”

Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and

2nd and 3rd Year: Primary DiscipleshipUnderstanding the Big Picture of the Old and New Testaments

WORD

5. New Testament Read-Through Class: The class time will summarize the major events and teachings

of the life of Christ, the early church, and the New Testament

books. Correspondingly, participants will be encouraged to

read the New Testament through chronologically in 6 months

(1 chapters a day) and highlight the commands and promises they encounter in order to “see” God’s will and enabling for the Christian life. John 5:3 says, “For this is the love for God, that we obey His commandments.” But how can we show God we love him by obeying His commands if we don’t know what His commands are? Based on their approximate date of writing as well as their targeted audience(s) we will read through the Jewish Gospel/Letters first (Matthew, Galatians, James, Hebrews, Jude), Roman Gospel/Letters next (Mark, Romans, 1 Peter, 2 Peter), then the Gentile Gospel/Letters (Luke, Acts, Pauline Epistles) and finally John’s gospel/letters (John, 1-3 John, Revelation).

6. Old Testament Read-Through Class: The class time will summarize the major events and teachings of

the Old Testament: Creation, Fall, Flood, Babel, Abraham and the

Patriarchs, Egypt and the Exodus, Wilderness Wanderings,

Conquest of Canaan, Period of the Judges, Israel’s First Kings

and United Kingdom, Kings of Israel and Judah during the

Divided Kingdom, Decline, Defeat, and Exile by the Assyrians

and Babylonians, Return and Rebuilding under the Medo-Persians,

and 400 silent years until the time of the Christ.

10. Strengthening Our Weaknesses10. Strengthening Our Weaknesses

I think we need to do what the Bible says…shore up our weaknesses, and I think our biggest weakness is that individually we are not consistently spending adequate time with God through His Word or in Prayer. My brothers and sisters, I have been weak in this area as well, and so may we together confess our spiritual apathy and laziness and let us be “forgetting what forgetting what lies lies behind and reaching forward to what behind and reaching forward to what lies lies ahead, ahead, 1414 I I press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” press on toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 3:13-14. Philippians 3:13-14.

Few Christians really know their Bible or study it regularly - thus their love/worship of God through obedience suffers, they are prone to pitfalls of sin, doctrinal error, and discouragement, division, and deception. Because many do not know what or why they believe - they are afraid to share their faith, and they are unable to defend their faith effectively. My friends if this describes you…resolve to change with me and to “Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes Put on the full armor of God, so that you will be able to stand firm against the schemes of the devil.” of the devil.” Ephesians 6:11Ephesians 6:11

Hebrews 12:12-15 12 Therefore, strengthen the hands that are weak and the knees that are feeble, 13 and make straight paths for your feet, so that the limb which is lame may not be put out of joint, but rather be healed. 14 Pursue peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no one will see the Lord. 15 See to it that no one comes short of the grace of God; that no root of bitterness springing up causes trouble, and by it many be defiled;

Page 35: Vision

There's nothing I enjoy more than studying the Bible. Yet it has not always been that way. My real passion for studying Scripture began when as a college student, I made a commitment to explore the Bible in earnest. I found that the more I studied, the more my hunger for Scripture grew. Here are three simple guidelines that have helped me to make the most of my study time.

Read the BibleFirst, I begin with reading the Bible. That seems obvious, but quite frankly, it's where many people fail. Too many Christians are content with a second-hand knowledge of Scripture. They read books about the Bible instead of studying the Bible for themselves. Books are good, but collateral reading can never replace the Bible itself. There are many good Bible reading plans available, but here is one I've found most helpful. I read through the Old Testament at least once a year. As I read, I note in the margins any truths I particularly want to remember, and I write down separately anything I don't immediately understand. Often I find that as I read, my questions are answered by the text itself. The questions to which I can't find answers become the starting points for more in-depth study using commentaries or other reference tools.

I follow a different plan for reading the New Testament. I read one book at a time repetitiously for a month or more. I began doing this when I was in seminary, because I wanted to retain what was in the New Testament and not always have to depend on a concordance to find things.

If you want to try this, begin with a short book, such as 1 John, and read it through in one sitting every day for 30 days. At the end of that time, you will know what's in that book. Write out on index cards the major theme of each chapter. By referring to the cards as you do your daily reading, you'll begin to remember the content of each chapter. In fact, you'll develop a visual perception of the book in your mind.

Divide longer books into short sections and read each section daily for thirty days. For example, the gospel of John contains 21 chapters. Divide it into 3 sections of 7 chapters. At the end of 90 days, you'll finish John. For variety, alternate short and long books and in less than 3 years you will have finished the entire New Testament — and you'll really know it!

How to Enjoy Bible StudyBy John MacArthur

Personal ChallengePersonal Challenge

Page 36: Vision

There are 27 books, 260 Chapters, and 7958 verses in the New Testament

Reading/Saturating - By reading around 7 Chapters everyday for 3 years – you can read through the New Testament 30 TIMES and come to really love, know, and apply its divine wisdom, truths, and principles!

Meditating/Memorizing - By reading and really meditating on the same book or section repeatedly for 30 days you’ll really come to love, know, understand, memorize, and no doubt obey the Bible much more deeply and effectively.

Studying/Journaling - Each day there is a different Bible Study technique or project to complete – so that even though you are reading the same book over and over – you are doing something new every day - looking for different things each day in your reading and writing down/completing 30 unique Bible Study methods, techniques, and projects every month in a journal.

Applying/Sharing – I encourage you to enter this challenge with your wife, kids, friends at church, and to regularly share from your journal what God is teaching you and how you are growing. In this way we can effectively edify and building one another up as the Scripture commands.
