“VISIBLE TYPE”

TRADITIONAL OBJECTIVE IN TYPOGRAPHIC DESIGN:“Text is composed to create a readable, coherent, and visually satisfying whole that works invisibly, without the awareness of the reader. ”

LEGIBILITY READABILITYHow easily characters can be recognized.

Function of type design. (PERCEPTION)How easily the text can be read As a whole. (COMPREHENSION)

TYPEFACE DESIGNER TYPOGRAPHER

“Easy to recognize shapes”“Easy to follow , read, and understand”

Letters should be: basic, simple medium weight

Letter form specifis: counters x-heights serif specifics + upper part of letter (study)

Letter styles: Non-italic/bold. (study)

Text should have: good letter & word spacing leading

Things to consider: amount of text context of design current design/type theory eye-movement (study)

WHICH IS BETTER FOR READABILITY/LEGIBILITY: SERIF OR SANS SERIF?

Things to consider: size of type

Current convetions: serif is better for READABILITYof text.

Current convetions: sans serifs are better for LEGIBILITYof the simplicity of letterforms.

Evidence: Reader preferrence / familiarity increase space b/w letters, aid to legibility most commonly used in book type settings.

Evidence: better legibility at smaller sizes understaded

CONCEPT CONNECTION Legibility and readability guidelines exist to make the

typeface “invisible” to the reader, emphasizing the content of the text. Principles of legibility and readability influence and re-inforce each other.

CONCEPTS FOR PANELS

LEGIBILITY

LETTER FORM COMPONENTS: Introduction to letterfom terminology through diagrams.

EXAMPLE PANEL: Different typefaces compared by cap size, x height 2 different type faces of same size & placement in paragraph examples.

Same typeface in 2 examples of text, one larger and one significantly smaller.

INTERACTIVE PANEL: compare typeface legibility by x-height, counter size, letter spacing, stroke width using a touch screen. READABILITY

TEXT SPACING/PLACEMENT BASICS: Introduction to terminology.

EXAMPLE PANEL: Same typeface in 2 examples of body text, only one utilizing readability principles.

INTERACTIVE PANEL: “where would you find this text”? pull out tabs that ask visitor to guess what type of publication the text is from based on the typeface/size/layout used.
