Basis

• Virtual studies = network-based studies• A mixture of different systems and methods• Long distances, isolation from big cities in Finland,

economical situation, lifelong learning have to find new ways to offer stuidying possibilities for students

• A strategic decision

Current state

• Virtual studies offered and developed especially for adult education programmes (since 2008)

• At the moment volyme is constantly growing (5-8 new groups/year)

• About 200 students at the moment ”online”, estimate within two years approximately 400

Supported systems

• iLinc (realtime system) • Discendum Optima (asynchronous system)• Others, like blogs, wikis etc.

• Approx. 10 online-sessions per evening• Most active groups: Forestry, Engineering, Land

surveying, Tourism, Hotel & Restaurant Management, Business Economics; some groups from School of Health Care and Social Services

• Aiming to increase flexible virtual student mobilty between UAS’s

• Finnish Online UAS –portal: www.amk.fi • Ministry of Education funding 2007-2009

- Mobility increased but the balance between in- and outgoing students was not achieved

- Currently not enough mobility to finance it - Is a possibility for strategic partnerships and

both national and international networking
