LEADING THE WAY IN THE DEVELOPMENT AND INTEGRATION OF VIRTUAL ENGINEERING TECHNOLOGIES FOR INDUSTRIAL AND COMMERCIAL APPLICATIONS ACROSS THE PRODUCT LIFECYCLE ENABLING INDUSTRY TO COMPETE WITHIN INCREASINGLY CHALLENGING GLOBAL MARKETS.

Our multi-disciplinary team provides expertise in the creation of innovative solutions, incorporating integrated

virtual prototypes and simulated processes and environments to enable engineers to explore design and

manufacturing possibilities, anticipate and resolve issues early in the development lifecycle and deliver

maximum product performance, cost effectively.

The Virtual Engineering Centre’s unique ‘sandpit’ model allows technology organisations to enhance their

capabilities through virtual innovation, accessing academic research and the latest scientific and technology

infrastructure. Our approach can be applied to engineering product development, production implementation,

through to training and customer support. Our capabilities are complemented by accessing our extensive networks

to maximise the opportunities for innovation and collaboration.

Delivering bespoke solutions, we work with clients across a range of sectors including, aerospace, automotive

and energy through both individual commercial projects and collaborative R&D programmes.

AUTONOMOUS AND INTELLIGENT SYSTEMSThe Autonomous and Intelligent Systems team provides a framework for

integrating, testing and evaluating performance of autonomous systems

software through simulation of virtual prototypes and their environments,

enabling de-risking, assessment of new concepts and support for

certification. Working with both airborne and ground based robotics, we

develop test harnesses at appropriate levels of fidelity to cover the whole

product development lifecycle.

Our new Robotic Autonomous Simulation Laboratory (RASL) supports

sectors including nuclear, space and energy and is primarily targeted towards

human-robot interaction, safety and reliability.

The VEC works closely with the Centre

for Autonomous Systems Technology

(CAST) which provides academic

expertise in autonomous systems,

combining research excellence in

areas such as software autonomy,

verification, autonomous sensors,

communications and data fusion from

across the University of Liverpool.

VIRTUAL TEST AND ENGINEERING RELIABILITYThe Virtual Test and Engineering Reliability team provides knowledge and

expertise across the areas of multi-body and structural dynamics, durability

and optimisation for sectors including automotive, aerospace and the

built environment.

Advanced modelling and simulation tools are used for product development

where virtual test environments are created using scientific workflows. We

have specific expertise in the development of bespoke frameworks which

enables organisations of all sizes ease of access to and full exploitation of

High Performance Computing facilities, resulting in competitive advantage

by significantly reducing the time taken to deliver the analysis of multiple

complex scenarios.

The VEC works closely with, and has

access to, the latest research from

the University of Liverpool’s Institute

for Risk and Uncertainty, a multi-

disciplinary research team, including

experts from engineering, mathematics

and computer science, architecture

and environmental sciences.

VIRTUAL DESIGN AND MANUFACTUREThe Virtual Design and Manufacturing team uses the latest specialist 3D

visualisation and physics based simulation allowing organisations to explore

their designs and optimise manufacturing and maintenance processes in a

highly interactive and intuitive way.

Combining the latest technologies to optimise the immersive environment,

our bespoke Virtual Visualisation Laboratories, integrated virtual prototyping

and simulation provide engineers and other senior decision makers with

greater insight in their product or process, enabling evaluation of multiple

solutions and speeding the decision making process.

The work of the VEC’s Virtual Design

and Manufacture team

is underpinned by the latest academic

research and expertise from the
