เชอกอโรค West Nile virus เปน RNA arbovirus (arthropod-borne virus) ซงอย ใน family Flaviviridae จดเปนสมาชกในกลมJapanese encephalitis serocomplex ของ genus Flavivirus ซงประกอบดวย Japanese encephalitis virus, Murray Valley encephalitisvirus และ St Louis encephalitis virus West Nile virus ประกอบดวย2 genetic lineages โดยการแบงกลมอาศยการจดเรยงตวของกรดอะมโนของ envelope proteins ของไวรส West Nile virus กลมทกอใหเกดโรค
ในมนษยทสำคญไดแกใน Lineage ท 1 ซงยงถกแบงยอยออกเปน 4 clades(Indian, Kunjin, A และ B) การตดเชอไวรส West Nile เปนสาเหตของการเกดภาวะ epidemic viral encephalitis ทพบบอยทสดของประเทศสหรฐอเมรกา และกอใหเกดการระบาดของภาวะสมองอกเสบครงใหญในซกโลกตะวนตก

การตดเชอ S. suis ในคนจะพบในประเทศทเลยงหมมากดงรปท 1Streptococcus suis เปนเชอแบคทเรยกรมบวกทรงกลม อยใน genusStreptococcus เชอตวนทวไปอยในหม ทตำแหนงทางเดนหายใจสวนบนอาทเชน ทอนซล ชองจมก ทางเดนอวยวะสบพนธและทางเดนอาหารของหมมทงหมด 35 serotype พบรายงานผปวยตดเชอเยอหมสมองอกเสบครงแรกในป คศ.1968 ทประเทศเดนมารก การตดเชอจากสตวสคนจากเชอ S. suisสวนใหญเกดจาก serotype 2 สามารถพบ Perotype อนๆ ไดเชนการศกษาในประเทศไทย ของ Kerdsin A และคณะพบ S. suis Perotype 14 ถงรอยละ6.8 การตดเชอ S. suis ในคนจะพบในประเทศทมการเลยงหมดงรปท 1
มปจจยหลายอยางทมผลตอความรนแรงของโรค เชน capsule,muramidaserelease protein, extracellular protein factor, Suilysin และadhesions ในการศกษาของ Li P และคณะเผยแพรในป ค.ศ. 2010นไดแสดงใหเหนวา VirA gene จะพบเฉพาะในสายพนธทมความรนแรงฉะนน VirA geneนาจะเปนปจจยตวหนงทมผลตอความรนแรงของโรค
สตวปวย ปจจบนไดมการใช วคซนในสตว อยางไรกด วคซนชนด Purifiedcapsule vaccine ไดผลไมดในการปองกนหมจาก S. suis type 2 ในคนยงไมมวคซนปองกน ในการบรโภคเนอหมตองทำใหสกโดยอณหภมภายในเนอตองถง 70 องศา
