Bow Hold: Staying Relaxed

Relaxed, free of tension

Follows natural shape of handCurve of fingers

Distance between fingers

1. Start with hands relaxed to sides.

2. Bend elbow, raising forearm with palms

facing down. • Observe hand shape – finger distances

Bow Hold: Starting light3. Clutch pencil between thumb

and middle finger.• Thumb gently bent. Pencil sitting

in first bend of the middle finger.

4. Relax other fingers onto the

pencil.• Check for tension in hand.• Check for natural hand shape.

Bow Hold: Completing the hold

5. Raise tip of pinky onto the

pencil• Pressure/Torque will increase

towards index finger.

6. Transfer hold onto bow• Thumb between pad and frog• Fingers should feel pressure

but not tension or strain
