VINES – THE OVERLOOKED RESTORATION
TECHNIQUEUse vines for aesthetics, habitat, &
temperature mitigation (reduction in thermal heat transfer from stone structures). For this
project a 9 inch long cutting of Virginia Creeper was planted every 5 ft along the top
of an existing stone wall.
1 YEAR LATER-Looking @ BW #7 & great first year growth of Virginia Creeper on stacked stone wall.

CHAUTAUQUA CREEK ICE DAMAGE REDUCTION
PROJECT –Near its mouth @ Lake Erie WESTFIELD, NY
Severe scour from ice and high flow velocities on the right descending bank had resulted in an overwidened section of stream.
Catskill Sand Cherry planted 3 years ago Under water & under ice every winter. Some examples growing 12 to 14 ft above
base flow water surface elevation Needs full sun
Catskill Sand Cherry growing well, covered with ice all winter, growing 12-14 ft above base flow.

4.66 years after completion. From the bridge looking DS. Except for narrow band of stone at toe, dense veg has covered
the entire bank.
