WHAT IS ?
A video sharing website, users can upload, share and view videos
Founded in Nov. 2004, by Zack Klein and Jake Lodwick
It does not allow Gaming videos, pornography or anything not created by the user on the site.
QUALITY
Oct. 2007, Vimeo becomes first video sharing site to support HD playback in 1280x720 (720p)
HD videos are automatically converted into 720/30p
Non-HD videos are re-encoded at a max of 30 frames/s, and they have higher bitrates than competing video sharing sites
MEMBERSHIP
Membership is free, create an account, and you can watch and share videos, you can upload 500mb per week, only 1 HD video per week
Vimeo Plus package, $60 per year, allows 5GB a week and unlimited HD uploads, creations of channels, groups and albums,
Plus users are able to upload 2.5hrs of HD video, that makes it possible to upload a full length HD feature film
Aug. 2011, Vimeo introduced its PRO account for business and commercial use, allows 50GB of storage, 250K plays, advanced analytics
Pro was designed for businesses and plus was designed for people
COMMUNITY
Vimeo is largely filled with indie film markers, and people who have a passion for film
Musicians have also been uploading and releasing material through Vimeo, Kanye West, Nine Inch Nails, and Britney Spears have all used Vimeo to release new material
The White house posts HD versions of its broadcasts to Vimeo
Businesses have started using Vimeo as a head hunting way to find new opportunities and new ideas for commercials
First annual Vimeo awards, took place Oct. 8-9, 2010 in NYC, dedicated towards showcasing and awarding creative videos from the site
Nine competitive categories, Judged Celebrity judges, Morgan Spurlock, Charlie
White, David Lynch, M.I.A Competition received 6500 entries, winners
were chosen for the 9 categories, the grand prize winner took home $25,000
10,10,10, One Day on Earth, people all over the world created an archive of over 3000 hrs of footage from that one day,
11,11,11, they are doing it again, One Day on Earth, the goal is to capture all aspects of life here on earth, from love and beauty, to sadness and tragedy
One Day on Earth is partnered with the United Nations, a feature film from last years submissions will be released in Feb. 2012
PROS & CONS
Pros- Videos are clear in HD, great spot to show off you talents, isn’t over run by junk videos, site is always improving and adding on new things, like the Vimeo Music store, there is a Vimeo school that will help you create better videos
Cons- Limit to your free uploads, a real indie film maker could only upload one video a week with the free membership, it costs money to any more than the bare minimum of uploads
