I want to update ourresidents on whatwe know about theRabbinical Collegeplans for the proper-ty on Route 306. Noapplication for devel-opment has yetbeen submitted tothe Village. Whenplans are submittedthey will be carefullyreviewed by the various village boards
in exactly the same manner as any other major devel-opment proposed for the village. We are not going totreat the developers of the college differently from anyother applicant, and this includes not meeting withthem before an application has been filed. As I havesaid before, we will be even-handed in our approach.
I have recently been asked about the constructionthat appears to have started in the “gravel pit” onRoute 202, opposite Pacesetter and David’sBagels. This is not the beginning of construction ofthe rumored project of townhouses for the site. The owners have leased a small portion of theirproperty for temporary storage of constructionequipment and material for a different project. Noplans for the development of the site have yetbeen filed with the Town of Haverstraw (no part ofthe site is in the Village of Pomona, although wewill be part of the review process), but when theyare, I will be sure to keep you informed.
Some of you have noted that the HaverstrawTown council recently authorized SupervisorPhillips to enter into a franchise agreement withVerizon for cable TV service in the town. Questionshave been asked as to whether the Village ofPomona will also be getting this new service.Verizon made a presentation to the Village about18 months ago to inform us of their FIOS project. We expect that as their build-out continues, theywill be approaching the Village to sign a franchiseagreement similar to Haverstraw’s. When the timecomes, the Village Board will carefully review theagreement and will determine whether to acceptit based on the best interests of our residents.
Construction has stopped on the Route202/Palisades Parkway bridge project. I have beenin touch with the Department of Transportation andwas informed that the project is being re-designed,and will most likely be re-bid when the new designis finished. Apparently the challenge of replacingthe bridge while keeping the parkway open wasnot adequately considered in the original design. One benefit of the project, however, was theexcellent job of re-paving the section of Parkway inthe bridge area, and at least the barriers havebeen moved and the signs removed. Construction isunlikely to resume until next year at the earliest.
Notes From The Mayor...Notes From The Mayor...
On May 21st, our newly appointed Village Clerk began working at Village Hall.Lisa Thorsen came on board with municipal experience
having worked at the Village of Chestnut Ridge.
We also say hello to our new (part time) Treasurer, Alan Bernstein. Al is a resident of the Village of Pomona and is looking forward to working with us.
His accounting background makes him an asset in the position.
Leslie will be working with them for a short time, until they feel comfortable, and then they will be on their own!
