A few questions with Katy Tabb, Newsies Choreographer

The unforgettable music, vibrant characters, and incredible story about a community of youth finding their voice to make change for the better has inspired me for decades. As a young girl, I wanted to BE a Newsie! Needless to say, if "Young Katy” knew that someday she could stage this show professionally, she would be over the moon!

Q. What is the biggest challenge this show presents?A. It is important to me that each Newsie is represented uniquely with their own personality. Though this is a huge ensemble dance show, this is a unique ragtag group of boys. It is important that the audience truly gets the sense that we are in New York City, not at a dance concert!

THE HOLIDAY SEASON fun FACTS

◗ Disney's Newsies is based on a true story. The newsboys' strike of 1899 was a U.S. youth-led campaign to force change in the way that Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst's news-papers compensated their child labor force of newspaper hawkers. The strike lasted two weeks and was successful in increasing the amount of money that newsboys received for their work.

◗ Since Newsies takes place in New York City, a dialect coach, Kate Myre Graham, is brought in to work with our cast to maintain authenticity and teach our newsboys how to sound like true New Yorkers.

◗ Composer Alan Menken and lyricist Jack Feldman wrote six entirely new numbers for the stage production that aren't in the film.

◗ While Harvey Fierstein’s book keeps much of the movie’s plot, he created a new character who serves as both a crusading reporter for the newsies and a love interest for the leading man.

When our son Lukas was 12 years old, he started participating in Village Theatre's KIDSTAGE program. Ever since he could walk, he had put on performances at home and at the time it sounded like a good idea to let him do what he was passionate about. Little did we know back then that Village Theatre would help him to develop the skills for theatre and for life which made him the very talented, motivated, and successful individual he is now with just 18 years under his belt. Although we are forever grateful to Kati Nickerson and the KIDSTAGE program,

Village Theatre has become so much more for us. Every season, we get excited for the new shows and can’t wait to see them at opening night in Everett. We also love going to the backstage parties and getting the behind the scenes glimpse only supporters can gain. We are proud that Village Theatre is investing in originals development, and are thrilled that Village Theatre is nationally known for its effort and success in supporting young writers, directors, and composers. Having Village Theatre with its world class performances at our doorstep in Everett is a special treat for us. Having Village Theatre in our community makes Everett and Snohomish County a great place to live.

How can we not support Village Theatre?! It's at the top of the list of reasons we love our community—right up there with the gorgeous mountains, fantastic schools, and friendly neighbors. We moved to Issaquah in 1997 with no thought of becoming “theatre people.” At that point we had probably only seen a total of 8 musicals between us! Now,150+ performances later (Mainstage, Originals, KIDSTAGE) we realize how much our entire family has been enriched by this local gem in countless ways. As modest donors we have been invited to

many "insider" events where we have expanded our appreciation of the arts and made life-long friends with fellow theatre enthusiasts, Village Theatre staff, and even many of the actors and other talent! We would highly recommend becoming a donor so you can join us at the backstage parties and the holiday cruise too! You will have a blast, learn a lot, meet new people, and support not just the theatre, but your entire community.

It’s also more than just a professional theatre; it is a beloved part of our community that contributes to Issaquah’s unique charm through its cultural enrichment and uplifting entertainment throughout the year.
